        Infinitely Close to Nature

        by Vo Trong Nghia

        The first book of Vo Trong Ngnia, “the architect who has changed Vietnam” commented by BBC and CNN.   He is a hot candidate for Pritzker Architecture Prize, winner of over 15 international prizes including International Architecture Award and ARCASIA award, recognized worldwide on bamboo architecture and green architecture.   “Sometimes we just ask the question: how many green areas, how many big trees, can we give back to our earth when we design the building?” ——Vo Trong Nghia Infinitely close to nature is the first book by Vo Trong Nghia, leading architect in bamboo architecture and green architecture, winner of more than 15 international awards including International Architecture Award, ARCASIA award, FuturArc Green leadership Award, etc. Through Vo’ s writings, interviews and cases, Infinitely Close to Nature records his classic practice in bamboo architecture, green architecture and low-cost houses. Vo believes that architecture should connect people with nature, instead of separating them off. He infuses highly “invasive” plants into the architecture space, creates “inner” space that is open or semi-open to nature, and builds green architecture with sustainable and local materials. By developing unique processing methods, he turns bamboo into “the steel of 21st century” and uses them to build strikingly grand bamboo architecture. In addition to commercial projects, Vo also pays attention to the residential condition of the low- er-income, designing low-cost houses which are inexpensive and easy to install, with their design also highly praised. The New York Times commented that he has brought Japanese simplicity to Southeastern Asia, CNN said he changed the skyline of Asia. With more than 60 high-res color pictures, Infinitely close to nature fully demonstrates the interior and exterior structure, details, inspirations and the aesthetical source of Vo’ s works.

        Gothic television

        by Helen Wheatley

        Gothic television is the first full length study of the Gothic released on British and US television. An historical account, the book combines detailed archival research with analyses of key programmes, from Mystery and Imagination and Dark Shadows, to The Woman in White and Twin Peaks, and uncovers an aspect of television drama history which has, until now, remained critically unexplored. While some have seen television as too literal or homely a medium to successfully present Gothic fictions, Gothic television argues that the genre, in its many guises, is, and has always been, well-suited to television as a domestic medium, given the genre's obsessions with haunted houses and troubled families. This book will be of interest to lecturers and students across a number of disciplines including television studies, Gothic studies, and adaptation studies, as well as to the general reader with an interest in the Gothic, and in the history of television drama.

        Nordic Gothic

        by Maria Holmgren Troy, Johan Hõglund, Yvonne Leffler, Sofia Wijkmark

        Nordic Gothic traces Gothic fiction in the Nordic region from its beginnings in the nineteenth century, with a main focus on the development of Gothic from the 1990s onwards in literature, film, TV and new media. The volume gives an overview of Nordic Gothic fiction in relation to transnational developments and provides a number of case studies and in-depth analyses of individual narratives. It creates an understanding of this under-researched cultural phenomenon by showing how the narratives make visible cultural anxieties haunting the Nordic countries, their welfare systems, identities and ideologies. Nordic Gothic examines how figures from Nordic folklore function as metaphorical expressions of Gothic themes and Nordic settings are explored from perspectives such as ecocriticism and postcolonialism. The book will be of interest to researchers and post- and- undergraduate students in various fields within the Humanities.

        Mit jedem Schlag unserer Flügel

        Der Abschluss der weltberühmten Autobiographie

        by Maya Angelou

        by Sara Gallardo

        There are beginnings in literature that encapsulate in a few words the entire conflict and grandeur of a work. Thus begins Los galgos, los galgos: “From my father, I inherited a house, half a field, and some money. I cried a lot over his death, but I can’t say that the inheritance took me by surprise. Sitting in the morning light, toward the end of the wake, I suggested to my brother that I would exchange my house for his part of the field, and as he immediately agreed and I had to sign a lot of papers, I realized I had made a bad deal.” These are the words of Julián, the protagonist and narrator of this novel, which can certainly be read as a story of love and heartbreak, but is so much more: an essay on the erosion of our convictions by time, a subtle commentary on the customs and practices of a class, and the impact of those customs and practices on certain fantasies and dissatisfaction, as well as a representation of the countryside, animals and plants like no other in Argentine literature. First published in 1968, Los galgos, los galgos won the Municipal Literature Prize and is considered a major work within Sara Gallardo’s extraordinary oeuvre. Written in a state of grace, infused with a melancholic sense of fatality but imbued with intelligent and refined humor, this is a novel that leaves an indelible mark, profound admiration, and eternal sorrow.

        Graveyard Gothic

        by Eric Parisot, David McAllister, Xavier Aldana Reyes

        Graveyard Gothic is the first sustained consideration of the graveyard as a key Gothic locale. This volume examines various iterations of the Gothic graveyard (and other burial sites) from the eighteenth century to the twenty-first, as expressed in numerous forms of culture and media including poetry, fiction, TV, film and video games. The volume also extends its geographic scope beyond British traditions to accommodate multiple cultural perspectives, including those from the US, Mexico, Japan, Australia, India and Eastern Europe. The seventeen chapters from key international Gothic scholars engage a range of theoretical frameworks, including the historical, material, colonial, political and religious. With a critical introduction offering a platform for further scholarship and a coda mapping potential future critical and cultural developments, Graveyard Gothic is a landmark volume defining a new area of Gothic studies.

        The Miracle of the Quran in Architecture and Urbanism

        by Yahya Hassan Waziri

        This book explains that the study of the relationship between (architecture and astronomy) or the influence of astronomical phenomena on the buildings of relatively modern civilizations has become an important branch of astronomy, known as (architectural astronomy) or (archaeoastronomy). The roots of this field began modestly at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Given the lack of awareness or limited knowledge of many about the topics and objectives of this science, even among specialists in the fields of architecture and archaeology, it was necessary to shed light on this science through studies conducted on many buildings of ancient civilizations around the world, both old and new, which we have presented in different chapters of the book.

        Ireland's Magdalen laundries and the nation's architecture of containment

        by James M. Smith

        Ireland's Magdalen Laundries and the Nation's Architecture of Containment connects Ireland's Magdalen laundries and the nation-state's nativist politics in the post-independence era, while critically evaluating cultural representations of the Magdalen laundries that have, over the past fifteen years, recovered these institutions from the amnesia at the center of state politics. The book interrogates available archival resources, including government reports, legislative debates, and court cases, to assert that the state was always an active agent in the operation and function of the nation's Magdalen homes. The second half of the book considers a wide range of creative works that help imagine and give narrative form to the Magdalen experience: commercial, independent documentaries, photography and literary representations. Ultimately, the book contends that Ireland's Magdalen institutions chiefly exist in the public mind at the level of story (cultural representation and survivor testimony) rather than history (archival history and documentation). This fascinating study will be invaluable to those interested in Irish History, Gender History and Social History. ;

        Architecture and Biology of Soils

        Life in Inner Space

        by Edited by Karl Ritz, Iain M Young.

        Soil is a fundamental and critical, yet often overlooked, component of terrestrial ecosystems. It is an extremely complex environment, supporting levels of diversity far greater than any ecosystem above ground. Bringing together existing knowledge in the areas of soil biology and physics, this book explores the key characteristics of soil spatial architecture, including how it develops and the consequences this has for life underground. The effects of soil's physical and biological components on their interactions and functions are used to demonstrate their roles in ecosystem dynamics.

        1 Angel Square

        The Co-operative Group's new head office

        by Len Grant

        This book charts the building of 1 Angel Square, the remarkable new head office for The Co-operative Group in Manchester's new NOMA district. Combining text and photographs to illustrate the building from commissioning to completion, Len Grant has interviewed the whole project team - clients, architects, engineers, project managers and builders - and has had unreserved access to document the creation of this already award-winning structure. The design of 1 Angel Square by the architects 3DReid, is currently the UK's highest BREEAM (Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method) rated office building to date, and it is set to be one of the most sustainable buildings in Europe. 1 Angel Square, the book, is an intimate record of this fascinating building. Some of the impressive facts include: 3,157 internal and external window panels make up the façade; there are 10,500 data and power outlets; it sits on 539 foundation piles, with an average depth of 18 metres below ground; and there are approximately 22km of power cables. This book will be required reading for students of architecture and construction, sustainability studies and urban planning, and for those with an interest in the history of one of the world's great businesses. ;
