East German intelligence and Ireland, 1949–90

        Espionage, terrorism and diplomacy

        by Jérôme de Wiel

This book is an in-depth examination of the relations between Ireland and the former East Germany between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It explores political, diplomatic, economic, media and cultural issues. The long and tortuous process of establishing diplomatic relations is unique in the annals of diplomatic history. Central in this study are the activities of the Stasi. They show how and where East German intelligence obtained information on Ireland and Northern Ireland and also what kind of information was gathered. A particularly interesting aspect of the book is the monitoring of the activities of the Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army and their campaigns against the British army in West Germany. The Stasi had infiltrated West German security services and knew about Irish suspects and their contacts with West German terrorist groups. East German Intelligence and Ireland, 1949-90 makes an original contribution to diplomatic, intelligence, terrorist and Cold War studies.

How the Cherry Orchard Was Cut Down, or the Long Road from Bad Ems

        by Oksana Zabuzhko

This book commemorates Oksana Miyakovska-Radysh (1919–2020), a long-term archivist of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences (UVAN) in New York. Her greatness lies in serving her cause with absolute freedom from complexes imposed by Russia and its culture. Reading this book is like flipping through an old family album in Miyakovska-Radysh's company. The book reveals numerous secrets. It turns out that Chekhov's Three Sisters were not just a figment of the writer's imagination. Moreover, Chekhov himself was a young man from then Ukrainian Taganrog, fond of his native Ukrainian language, theatre and one of the three sisters. The book also explores the connection between the "new woman" in Russian literature and the 19th-century Ukrainian women's movement and looks into the past mistakes that still have repercussions for Ukrainians today.

        HOMECOMING

        by Wolfgang Büscher

In the middle of the woods, in the middle of Germany: Wolfgang Büscher‘s fascinating journey into its very core. Night after night, a boy stands at the window of his parents’ house and watches the sun as it disappears from view behind the rolling hills in the west. He roams through the woods with his friends, building wooden shacks which the foresters destroy. It’s the early sixties. Decades later, Wolfgang Büscher makes his childhood dream come true. He moves to the woods and experiences spring, summer and autumn there. An aristocratic family on the border of Hessen and Westphalia where Büscher grew up allows him to stay in a hunting lodge in the middle of the woods, in the middle of Germany.  This is where he puts up his camp bed. He has no electricity or running water. He prepares himself for quiet times alone, chopping wood and making fires, the odd hunting expedition, hiking, a marksmen’s festival, extreme loneliness and a nighttime blackness never seen in the city. The year takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn as storms, heat and plagues of beetles kill half of the woods. And something else happens which turns everything on its head: Büscher’s mother dies that summer, meaning the house he grew up in is left empty, but full of memories. This is a homecoming more existential than he could have imagined. A book far removed from the deafening din of today‘s world. An exploration of a nation, floods of memories and a “sentimental education” all rolled into one - literary, perceptive and overwhelming.

        Nordic Gothic

by Maria Holmgren Troy, Johan Hõglund, Yvonne Leffler, Sofia Wijkmark

Nordic Gothic traces Gothic fiction in the Nordic region from its beginnings in the nineteenth century, with a main focus on the development of Gothic from the 1990s onwards in literature, film, TV and new media. The volume gives an overview of Nordic Gothic fiction in relation to transnational developments and provides a number of case studies and in-depth analyses of individual narratives. It creates an understanding of this under-researched cultural phenomenon by showing how the narratives make visible cultural anxieties haunting the Nordic countries, their welfare systems, identities and ideologies. Nordic Gothic examines how figures from Nordic folklore function as metaphorical expressions of Gothic themes and Nordic settings are explored from perspectives such as ecocriticism and postcolonialism. The book will be of interest to researchers and post- and- undergraduate students in various fields within the Humanities.

        Teenagers Reading Chinese Philosophy

        by Zhang Jiahua

In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period of ancient China, the philosophical views of various schools met and contended, arousing a more brilliant spark of wisdom. The epic and unprecedented movement in the academy world was called the "Contention of a Hundred Schools of Thought." Scholars of various schools have written their wisdom achievements that they strove to secure through lifetime hard work into their own academic works, leaving us with a timeless ideological wealth that can teach us morals and enlighten our wisdom.   With simple and fluent texts and concise interpretation, Teenagers Reading Chinese Philosophy systematically introduces the essence of the philosophical thoughts of philosophers including Confucius, Mencius, Mozi, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Xun Kuang, and Han Feizi. As an enlightening book of Chinese philosophy designed for children, it eliminates the barriers to reading classical Chinese in the pre-Qin period, and makes the "abstruse and mysterious" philosophy easy for children to understand.

        Philosophy of Freedom

        by Myroslav Popovych

The book "Philosophy of Freedom" by Myroslav Popovych is part of the "Great Scientific Project" series, which collects the works of various authors. Myroslav Volodymyrovych was a great Ukrainian philosopher and thinker, an outstanding personality, and for many years he headed the Institute of Philosophy named after G. Skovoroda. In different years, he wrote articles and essays that were published in various journals in Ukraine and abroad. "Philosophy of Freedom" is a collection of essays and thoughts, which he himself systematised during the last months of his life. The author witnessed many historical events, and remembering them, he sought to understand why everything happened this way and not the other, whether anything could have been changed, whether the past of the Ukrainian people had an influence on them. Popovych searched for the truth, because it was the most important goal for him, and now posterity can find out what conclusions he reached. The topics of his interest vary, but mostly he researched theories and objects, and analysed historical events.

        German for Pharmaceutical Practice

        Communicate, research, present

by Nadine Yvonne Sprecher, Annette Thomas, Annegret Lehmann and Anke Schichte. In collaboration with Christiane Schneider

In the pharmacy, the staff communicate with customers, colleagues, the medical profession, sales representatives and nursing home staff. Pharmacy employees produce written information based on well-chosen sources and represent the pharmacy to the outside world through presentations, on social media, or with the help of flyers, posters and other promotional materials. All this presupposes the confident use of language, and is best trained in advance. Part A of this work provides assistance for the most diverse communicative requirements in the pharmacy. A short theoretical explanation is always followed by several tasks so that you can immediately put what you have learned into practice and try it out. The „Brief overview of grammar and language knowledge“ boxes point out linguistic stumbling blocks. Those who are not yet sure of the technical terms can make themselves fit in Part B. Here one learns how to conduct a good counselling interview according to the BAC guideline. Extensive lists of technical terms and their explanations suitable for everyday use – all arranged according to organ systems – contain the most important vocabulary for everyday pharmacy work. A totally practical German lesson!

        The German Channel

        A Mythology from the FRG

        by Frank Uekötter

A historic big infrastructure project in the nexus of federal government policy planning From Berlin Airport to Stuttgart 21 – public building projects seem to get out of hand with growing frequency. Frank Uekötter follows the example of the Elbe Lateral Canal, which was opened in 1976, to show that institutional failure is not a new phenomenon. The virtually forgotten story of the Elbe Lateral Canal represents an inglorious episode of German federal policy planning. The benefit of the 115 km long waterway, which connects the Mittelland Canal with the River Elbe, was completely out of proportion to the level of investment. Despite this, the project was soon unstoppable in the nexus of corporate interests, political aims and the policy for growth. A dam ruptured at Lüneburg only weeks after its opening. Uekötter argues for a social rethink based on the clear chronology of these “organized irresponsibilities”.

        Arctic state identity

        Geography, history, and geopolitical relations

        by Ingrid A. Medby

This book sets out to answer what it means to hold a formal title as one of the eight 'Arctic states'; is there such a thing as an Arctic state identity, and if so, what does this mean for state personnel? It charts the thoughtful reflections and stories of state personnel from three Arctic states: Norway, Iceland, and Canada, alongside analysis of documents and discourses. This book shows how state identities are narrated as both geographical and temporal - understood through environments, territories, pasts and futures - and that any identity is always relational and contextual. As such, demonstrating that to understand Arctic geopolitics we need to pay attention to the people whose job it is to represent the state on a daily basis. And more broadly, it offers a 'peopled' view of geopolitics, introducing the concept and framework of 'state identity'.

A TIME OF WOLVES: GERMANY AND THE GERMANS 1945 - 1955

        by Harald Jähner

A dance among the ruins: Harald Jähner’s major new portrait of Germany’s post-war societyCountless former soldiers drift through the towns and cities; countless children grow up without a father. The old order has been destroyed and although the streets seem eerily empty, the traditional annual street carnivals are soon back in full swing, jazz can be heard among the ruins, intellectuals rekindle a culture of discussion and debate.Harald Jähner’s book is the first history of Germany’s national mentality in the immediate post-war period. It focusses on the German people in all their diversity: the “re-educators” Alfred Döblin and Rudolf Herrnstadt, who tried in two different zones of occupation to win the trust of their fellow Germans; Beate Uhse, owner of a mail order company for “marital hygiene”, who questioned the old moral code governing what was deemed proper; the many nameless black market traders, pockets stuffed with Lucky Strike cigarettes; stylish housewives sitting at kidney-shaped coffee tables that were to become emblematic for a freer and affordable world. Using major political developments as a backdrop, this book weaves a series of life stories into a nuanced panorama that makes the monumental changes affecting the nation tangible for its readers. 1945 to 1955 was a raw, wild decade poised between two eras, portrayed here as a period that proved decisive for Germany’s future development – and one starkly different to how most Germans imagine it today.
