        The After-Time Chronicles

        One Small Spark

        by Andy Woodage

In the footsteps of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series comes Andy Woodage's debut novel and our entrance into his bio-engineered fantasy world. The After-Time Chronicles: One Small Spark is a young-adult fantasy novel of good, evil, genetically engineered creatures, romance, blood, and the search for belonging. Imagine a world without oil, where metals are only available if they can be salvaged or recycled. Imagine if coal was running out. It’s a world where armies no longer build metal monsters, but biological horrors. A world where genetic engineering has become the art of war. This is 12-year-old Jothan’s world. Orphaned by a terrible accident, he dreams of leaving his uneventful life with his grandparents on the family’s griffin farm. However, when a catastrophic attack wipes out every homestead in The Zoological Zone, his world is turned upside down. He finds himself thrust into a story larger than he ever dreamed, embarking on a rough journey with a mysteriously appearing warrior to the fabled ‘Temple of Elohim’. Accompanied by his best friend, the griffin Gozell, Jothan sets off across a land ravaged by poverty and wild creatures. Battling his way across the dangerous landscape, his eyes are opened to an empire in the grip of war and unrest... with the ever increasing weight of his role in events to come. Will they make it to the Temple? Will they be welcomed when they arrive? Can Jothan unravel the secrets that seem to control the lives of everyone he meets, including his mysterious saviour?

by Alexandra Salmela & Linda Bondestam

Bean-Bean hates miserable Wednesdays. That is when he has to walk through the park alone, and in the park lurks Toughie.   Today things go very wrong. When Toughie bullies Bean-Bean, her essential device is broken. As a punishment, Bean-Bean’s beloved rag bird Stormbeard gets prisoned in the highest branches of a tree. Luckily, in the bus BeanBean bumps into a lion-maned cheetah, a genuine, living, imaginary friend. Together they hasten to save Strombeard.   The atypical adventure takes the friends into a forest to bounce on a trampoline in the appearance of fantastic fruit, and into the drains where they end up at the mercy of mutant monsters and mammoths.   Alexandra Salmela and Linda Bondestam’s book is a crazy, funny and brilliantly colourful story about the power of the imagination and the courage to be yourself –whether you are a child using words in a funny way, an elephant in mammoth’s clothing or a self-absorbed, constantly blabbering cheetah.

The Blue Days, the Punishment Night

        by Mojtaba Hoshyar Mahboob

The Blue Days, the Punishment Night is a novelette. It’s a crazy story of separation and deals with the sad days after the loss. The main character travels to a strange land to bring back what he lost. Where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred and everything seems strange. Davoud had fallen in love with Sarah in a pharmacy. Because of Sarah, the days were more colorful than ever and the moments were sweeter. Sarah had made Davoud like himself again. Davoud had found life in Sarah and now it was logical that he would not be able to bear this life after Sarah's accident and death. This pain and loneliness were killing him gradually. So he decided to build a device called a "living memory". The device used to work by inserting photos of Sarah, summoning Sarah's ghost, and then, Davoud had an hour to see Sarah's ghost, talk to her, laugh and live, and then gone again. The opportunity to meet was limited. No, that was not the way. So Davoud went to a tunnel that led to a strange land called Marzin. The inhabitants said his missing one was there and he could find her. Davoud found out that Sarah is inside a large palace and was waiting for him behind the window. He became friends with Taimur and Nazanin and looked for Sarah with them. But it was not that simple. Yellow snakes had taken over the city and the lives of the inhabitants were in danger. Nazanin was killed by one of these snakes. Davoud became alone. Taimur also fell prey to a cheetah and perished. Davoud became more alone. Now it was just him and himself. Could he pass through this difficult path and bring Sarah back? Could he rid himself of the one who was slashing his face and throwing him down from the well? Or not, could he give up this sentimental endeavor and cope with this loss?
