Anläßlich des 750jährigen Geburtstages von Marco Polo kann man sich davon erneut durch seinen Reisebericht Die Wunder der Welt überzeugen – einem der ältesten und einflußreichsten seiner Art. Auch die jüngsten wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzungen über das Ob und Wann von Marco Polos Chinareise haben dem Zauber des Textes nichts anhaben können, nichts seinem Geist von Offenheit, Neugier und Toleranz dem Fremden gegenüber. Kein Mensch des Mittelalters hatte wohl so viel von der Welt gesehen wie der Kaufmann Marco Polo. Seine Reisen führten ihn quer durch Asien, sei es gemeinsam mit seinem Vater oder im Auftrag des Großkhans Kublai, mit dem Polo eine kulturübergreifende Freundschaft verband und an dessen Hof in der Nähe des heutigen Peking Polo mehrere Jahre verbrachte. Er besuchte u. a. Persien, Pamir, die Turkvölker entlang der Seidenstraße, China, Südostasien, Ceylon, Indien und Kleinasien. Darüber hinaus sammelte Polo soviel Informationen wie möglich, auch über Länder, die er nicht bereisen konnte. So entstand kein reines Sachbuch, sondern eine Mischung aus Reisebericht, Reiseführer, Unterhaltungsroman und Abenteuergeschichte, in der Märchenhaftes und gewissenhafte Dokumentation sich durchdringen. Es waren jedoch nicht, wie man meinen könnte, die kolportierten Berichte über Fabelwesen, böse Geister und Monster, die Polos Zeitgenossen am unglaubwürdigsten erschienen, sondern diejenigen über Papiergeld, über Porzellan, Kohle, Nudeln und Eiscreme. Gleichwohl diente das Buch über Jahrhunderte hinweg vielen immer wieder als Inspiration, u. a. Christoph Kolumbus, der Die Wunder der Welt auf seiner »Indien«-Reise bei sich hatte.

RNA interference (RNAi) has the potential to make major contributions towards sustainable crop production and protection with minimal environmental impacts compared to other technologies.
