Reframing difference is the first major study of two overlapping strands of contemporary French cinema, cinema beur (films by young directors of Maghrebi immigrant origin) and cinema de banlieue (films set in France's disadvantaged outer-city estates). Carrie Tarr's insightful account draws on a wide range of films, from directors such as Mehdi Charef, Mathieu Kassovitz and Djamel Bensalah. Her analyses compare the work of male and female, majority and minority film-makers, and emphasise the significance of authorship in the representation of gender and ethnicity. Foregrounding such issues as the quest for identity, the negotiation of space and the recourse to memory and history, she argues that these films challenge and reframe the symbolic spaces of French culture, addressing issues of ethnicity and difference which are central to today's debates about what it means to be French. Mazen, a young boy, is one day surprised by their neighbor Bassam shouting with anger in the street “My parking spot is a red line!” Does this mean he plans to paint the street red, asks Mazen to his mother? The mother explains to Mazen that what Bassam means is simply that no one is to park in his place. The notion is still vague to Mazen: Why red? Does it have anything to do with red traffic lights? The mother tries again “When something is a red line, it means that it is off limits to others”. In this illustrated album, Samar Barraj boldly addresses the delicate issue of child sexual abuse. Acknowledging the complexity of the boundary it tackles, the book determines it through examples the mother and child raise in their conversation. Mazen’s spontaneous remarks and comments point out the difficulty of defining this red line, and make of the book a realistic example of such a conversation. The illustrations develop the notion further, by representing situations in which the red line might be crossed – one may be on his bicycle, at his computer, or approached by a respectable-looking old man in the street. The body parts are not named, but are represented in a naïve drawing Mazen made, though the text insists on the importance of preserving the body as a whole. The colorful images and constant presence of the mother and parents make of the book a reassuring experience despite the gravity of the topic.

Die Psalmen hat das Christentum übernommen, die im Raum der lateinischen Kultur entstandenen Hymnen sind sein eigener Beitrag zur Lyrik der Weltliteratur. Im 4. Jahrhundert setzt diese für Gottesdienst und private Frömmigkeit gedachte Literatur ein. Am Ende des Mittelalters ist der Bestand auf annähernd dreißigtausend Titel angewachsen. Hunderte sind in der Neuzeit im ständigen liturgischen Gebrauch geblieben. Der lateinische Hymnus wurde, wie etwa bei dem Passionslied „O Haupt, voll Blut und Wunden”, Grundlage deutschsprachiger Kirchenlieddichtung. Stücke wie das „Stabat mater” oder „Dies irae” haben große Kompositionen angeregt. Aus diesem Schatz werden in der vorliegenden Ausgabe dreiunddreißig Titel ausgewählt. Auf den lateinischen Text folgt jeweils eine Neuübersetzung oder eine liturgisch verwendete Nachdichtung. Einige Bemerkungen zur Textüberlieferung und ein ausführlicher Kommentar erschließen jeweils den Hymnus. Die Auswahl folgt dem Ablauf des Kirchenjahres und des monastischen Stundengebets. Sie ist exemplarisch für die literarische und theologische Vielfalt des Genres und kann als kleine poetische Summe der lateinischen Tradition des Christentums gelesen werden.
