Solisluna

Attentive to ethnic appeal and modeled on the diverse Brazilian identity, Solisluna, located in the State of Bahia, where Brazil began, started its operations in 1993. Since its inception it has been dedicated to publishing books focused on the artistic, cultural and historical expressions of Brazilian Identity. These publications deal with architectural and religious heritage, the environment, racial plurality and issues related to social and technological changes that have occurred in a modernizing society. Heavily influenced by the Brazilian, and more specifically Bahian, cultural context, the designs of Solisluna’s books creatively reproduce these unique themes. Solisluna has been known for publishing high-quality literature: prose and poetry, novels, essays and Afro-Brazilian studies, in addition to art and children’s books.

Child soldiers in International law

Can the use of children as soldiers be effectively regulated at an international level? 'Child soldiers in international law' examines how international law has developed to deal with this problematic and emotive issue. Happold looks at the rules restricting the recruitment of children into armed forces - rules which, though important, are often flouted - but also at the wider legal issues arising from child soldiering: to what extent can child soldiers be held criminally liable for their conduct? How should they be treated when captured? How are states obliged to demobilise and reintegrate them into their societies? It also identifies a move away towards enforcement, through the prosecution of those who recruit child soldiers, and proposals for Security Council sanctions against governments and groups who breach their international obligations by using children in armed conflicts. This study will be essential reading for those concerned with public international law, human rights, and the United Nations and peacekeeping. ;

The Victorian soldier in Africa re-examines the campaign experience of British soldiers in Africa during the period, 1874-1902 - the zenith of the Victorian imperial expansion - and does so from the perspective of the regimental soldier. The book utilises an unprecedented number of letters and diaries, written by regimental officers and other ranks, to allow soldiers to speak for themselves about their experience of colonial warfare. The sources demonstrate the adaptability of the British army in fighting in different climates, over demanding terrain and against a diverse array of enemies. They also uncover soldiers' responses to army reforms of the era as well as the response to the introduction of new technologies of war. Moreover, the book provides commentary on soldiers' views of commanding officers and politicians alongside assessment of war correspondents, colonial auxiliaries and African natives in their roles as bearers, allies and enemies. This book reveals new insights on imperial and racial attitudes within the army, on relations between soldiers and the media and the production of information and knowledge from frontline to homefront. It will make fascinating reading for students, academics and enthusiasts in imperial history, Victorian studies, military history and colonial warfare.
