The politics of male friendship in contemporary American fiction

        by Michael Kalisch

How might our friendships shape our politics? This book examines how contemporary American fiction has rediscovered the concept of civic friendship and revived a long tradition of imagining male friendship as interlinked with the promises and paradoxes of democracy in the United States. Bringing into dialogue the work of a wide range of authors - including Philip Roth, Paul Auster, Michael Chabon, Jonathan Lethem, Dinaw Mengestu, and Teju Cole - this innovative study advances a compelling new account of the political and intellectual fabric of the American novel today.

From Dream to Trauma: Mental abuse in partnerships

        by Caroline Wenzel

The level of domestic abuse has been increasing for years, but often only cases of physical abuse hit the headlines. Hardly anyone talks about the mental, or psychological, abuse that usually precedes a physical or sexual assault. Those affected do not usually recognise the destructive dynamic in their relationship until far too late. In this book, three case histories illustrate the typical forms of mental abuse in relationships. In addition, experts explain the topic from psychological, therapeutic, political and legal perspectives, and the head of a counselling centre for male victims of mental abuse also has his say. An important and startling book.

        The Surname Detective

Investigating surname distribution in England since 1086

        by Colin Rogers

        From the author of The Family Tree Detective, this guide provides the amateur genealogist or family historian with the skills to research the distribution and history of a surname. Colin Rogers uses a sample of 100 names, many of them common, to follow the migration of people through the centuries. Each of the 100 names is mapped since the Doomsday book in 1086. For those whose name is not among the sample, the book shows how to find out where namesakes live now, how they moved around the country through time, and how the name originated from a placename, a nickname or an occupation. Colin Rogers finishes this work by showing how the distribution of surnames can be studied irrespective of the size of the surrounding population, and reaches some interesting conclusions about which names are more reliable guides to migration since the 14th century. ;

        Loving, Lying, and Healing

Heal an infidelity and renew your love pacts so as not to suffer

        by Tere Díaz Sendra

Is fidelity an agreement with an expiration date?Does infidelity always involve heartbreak and conflict? After we discovered an infidelity, is it possible to repair and restore trust?Living a committed and loving relationship is a deeply human longing. The issue ofinfidelity (a frequent love conflict) must be addressed by integrating thecontradictions and ambivalences of human nature, particularly on the topic oflove. Infidelity is a very complex phenomenon that is characterized by theexistence of a “villain” and a “victim”. Many times it is explained in a moralistic wayand that prevents exploring the motivations that drive it, the beliefs that supportit and the procedures that complicate it. Love requires commitment andcertainties, while erotic desire opens different paths within the same territory oflove. The correct management of these two forces is key to understanding andovercoming infidelity.

        Jerks!

        And how to spot them

        by Tere Díaz Sendra

Are you tired of asking your partner and explaining what you need, and receive noresponse? Are you frustrated by feeling that your needs are not considered? Do you fearthat your relationship will limit your personal growth? Do you feel that there is love, butalso that his love catches you and wears you down? Many people, particularly women, seek therapy for symptoms like depression and anxiety, but without clear awareness of what causes them. Many blame themselves for not being “good enough, ” and not understanding to their partners. The common denominator of their mental health challenge is the minimization and invisibility caused by the oppression in in their exchanges with their partner, as opposed to receiving encouragement and support for their personal and professional development. This oppression will lead to diminishment and limiting their decisions through silences, gestures, humiliations or even physical violence, while they protect themselves byassuming a role that is lower than that of his/her partner. Jerks are not always easy to identify; they tend to confuse their partners with effusivedisplays of love that cover up their high doses of control and abuse. We talk about thejerks, those men who make people fall in love with sweet words, flowers and attention and who, little by little, display their crude, aggressive and even dangerous ways of “loving”. They destroy self-esteem and make their prey feel guilty for their behaviors. This book is a guide that speaks to the person trapped in a pitiful relationship. To reflect on your daily life and identify the characteristics of an abusive relationship, leading her by the hand to recognize the beliefs that trap her, to distinguish the patterns that she repeats, and to put into practice techniques that will allow her to get out of the abuse, recover, and bloom again.

Mason's World Dictionary of Livestock Breeds, Types and Varieties

        by Valerie Porter

This is a new edition of a standard reference text, and contains key breed information about cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses, asses and buffalo. It contains approximately 9000 entries and cross-references on breeds, sub-breeds, types, varieties, strains and lines of these species. The aim is to include all the livestock names that may be encountered in international literature. Each entry includes the current recommended English name, region or country of origin, notes on usage, followed by a brief physical description of the breed, in terms of colour/markings, horns, and coat type. There is a description of the relationship with other breeds or types, and historical notes about the origin of the breed, plus details of breed societies, and herdbooks where relevant. Finally, foreign names and synonyms are listed, to aid identification. The book has been thoroughly updated since the 4th edition was published in 1996. Revisions have been undertaken by Valerie Porter, a well-respected author of more popular works on animal breeds.

How politics makes use of science and breaks down because of it

        by Klaus Ferdinand Gärditz

        — Astute analysis of the relationship between politics and the natural sciences — Danger of undermining democratic processes Today, political decision-making processes are closely intertwined with processes of scientific knowledge generation. The natural sciences play a central role in politics. This became particularly clear during the corona pandemic and in the regular press conferences in which politicians largely narrowed their course to scientific findings. The consequence of this maxim is that the rationalisation of politics is accompanied by a politicisation of science. Science is exploited, and sometimes allows itself to be exploited. In his equally brilliant and sharp analysis, Klaus Ferdinand Gärditz explains the consequences of this development for the democratic process in particular.

by Edited by Mo Salman, Jordi Tarrés-Call.

These problems are enhanced by the spread of ticks to new regions, and many tick-borne diseases having zoonotic capability. This book is an expansion of the EFSA report on the subject, and details the significance of tick-borne diseases, identification of tick species, emerging tick-borne infections, factors influencing the spread and distribution of ticks and surveillance and control measures.
