        Plant Breeding Technology

        Future Trends and Challenges

        by Zeba Khan

        This book highlights the latest and most exciting technological tools for plant breeding that are becoming the staple of all crop improvement programs. Using case studies and an evidence-based approach to examine the current status of each technique, the book discusses the challenges so far uncovered and future trends. Crop improvement relies on modulating the genes and genomic regions underlying key traits, either directly or indirectly. Direct approaches include overexpression, RNA interference, and genome editing, while conventional breeding constitutes the indirect approach. The integration of cutting-edge tools and technologies has the potential to expedite improvements in crop species. Innovations such as next-generation sequencing, high-throughput genotyping, precision editing, and the utilization of space technology to accelerate growth have opened new avenues in crop improvement programs, aimed at delivering new crop varieties capable of resilience to a variety of challenges. The book presents a systematic guide to various genomics approaches deployed for trait discovery and improvement in crop species. The chapters comprehensively cover each application, its advantages, and disadvantages, and its potential for improvement, supported by illustrative examples. The book: · Emphasizes the latest scientific and technological tools which are becoming the norm in all major crop improvement programs · Explores innovative approaches and cutting-edge technologies utilized in the development and improvement of climate-resilient crops. · Each chapter is supplemented with ample illustrations to clarify and summarize the key points and provides an easy-to-understand overview of the most important concepts, applications and advances in crop improvement technologies.

        Olga's Secret

        Friendship - Migration - War

        by Aneta Marovich

        A Novel Based on the Author’s Life From the cobble stoned streets of Zagreb, Yugoslavia to sun-bleached Adelaide, Australia, Olga’s Secret is a novel about love and friendship tested by separation and war. Is there a time in life when it’s too late to leave your country forever? Anya returns to her homeland after her new life in Australia ended in heartbreak. Back in her homeland she renews her friendship with Olga and rekindles her past love with Filip. But both relationships are marred by secrets and the country she came back to will self-destruct in a war.  Returning once again at the war’s end, Anya finds her home country in ruins. Her closest attachments, like the country, are in danger of being destroyed when her best friend reveals a disturbing secret. Juxtaposing landscapes and cultures to evoke the nature of displacement and belonging, this is a story of love in all its forms involving the three protagonists.  Written with sensitivity and compassion Olga’s Secret explores life’s universal questions: What is the nature of friendship and love? Small Animal Veterinary Psychiatry

        by Sagi Denenberg, Ali Thompson

        Problem behaviours are often the result of how an animal thinks and feels, genetics, and environmental influences. Steering away from just description diagnoses and focusing instead on emotional and cognitive causes, this book provides a practical approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing behaviour pathologies in dogs and cats. Beginning by addressing cases in the first opinion practice, this book then considers physical disorders that may lead to or exacerbate abnormal behavior. From there, the focus shifts to mental and emotional health, from an assessment of normal behavior and giving juveniles an optimal start in life, to diagnosing mental and emotional disorders, addressing emotions such as anxiety and frustration, and how to manage these issues - by modifying behavior, managing the animal's environment, training, and, when necessary, the use of medications. The second half of the book then addresses owner concerns, including management problems, aggression, affective disorder, elimination disorder, abnormal and repetitive behaviours and ageing-related problems. With an emphasis on helping first line veterinarians identify common presentations and offer help to owners, this book: - Addresses both normal and abnormal behaviour in cats and dogs from an emotion and cognition perspective; - Provides behaviour modification protocols, and drug doses and indications; - Includes handouts to be used both within the practice and with clients to help the veterinary surgeon manage the case. Written by international experts, the book translates their insights and experience into approaches taken in behavioural medicine. Also including the most up-to-date drugs, it is an important resource for both small animal veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine or animal behaviour.

        Art history

        A critical introduction to its methods

        by Michael Hatt, Charlotte Klonk

        Art History: A critical introduction to its methods provides a lively and stimulating introduction to methodological debates within art history. Offering a lucid account of approaches from Hegel to post-colonialism, the book provides a sense of art history's own history as a discipline from its emergence in the late-eighteenth century to contemporary debates. By explaining the underlying philosophical and political assumptions behind each method, along with clear examples of how these are brought to bear on visual and historical analysis, the authors show that an adherence to a certain method is, in effect, a commitment to a set of beliefs and values. The book makes a strong case for the vitality of the discipline and its methodological centrality to new fields such as visual culture. This book will be of enormous value to undergraduate and graduate students, and also makes its own contributions to ongoing scholarly debates about theory and method. ;

      • Der Bau der Cheops-Pyramide

        Analyse und Modellentwicklung

        by Günter Fischer

        Der monumentale Bau der Cheops-Pyramide fasziniert die Menschheit seit Jahrtausenden. In dieser Arbeit wird der Nachweis erbracht, dass der Bau über einen auf dem Bauwerk liegenden Transportweg erfolgt ist. Die neusten Ausgrabungen von Hatnub liefern einen archäologischen Beleg für die Richtigkeit des entwickelten Modells.Seit Jahrhunderten schon versuchen Wissenschaftler die Frage zu beantworten, wie die Ägypter es geschafft haben, mit den ihnen damals zur Verfügung stehenden einfachen Mitteln 2,32 Millionen Steine, von denen in den unteren zehn Steinlagen jeder über 5 Tonnen schwer ist, in einem tradierten Zeitraum von 20 bis 30 Jahren bis zu einer Höhe von ca. 147 Metern die Cheops-Pyramide zu errichten.Groß ist die Zahl der Erklärungsversuche. Immer neue Apparate und Methoden sind entwickelt worden, mit denen diese Steine von einer auf die nächst höhere Steinlage gehoben werden könnten. Diese Vorschläge haben sich alle als untauglich erwiesen, weil die Ausführung gemäß dieser Modelle, sofern sie bautechnisch überhaupt realisierbar ist, eine deutlich längere Bauzeit als 30 Jahre benötigt.Es braucht einen Paradigmenwechsel. Der Autor setzt zum ersten Mal für die Analyse und Modellentwicklung die exakten Methoden der Mathematik und Mechanik ein. Er beschreibt in der vorgelegten Abhandlung alle Abläufe auf der Großbaustelle bis ins letzte Detail. Seine in Diagrammen und Tabellen aufgezeichneten Ergebnisse können von jedermann verifiziert werden. Er liefert konkrete Zahlen für die Bauzeit, die Anzahl der eingesetzten Gespanne, Zugtiere und Arbeiter und vieles andere mehr.Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen und Tabellen.
