        Sports-Related Concussions in Youth

Improving the Science, Changing the Culture

by Robert Graham, Frederick P. Rivara, Morgan A. Ford, and Carol Mason Spicer, Editors; Committee on Sports-Related Concussions in Youth; Board on Children, Youth, and Families; Institute of Medicine; National Research Council

In the past decade, few subjects at the intersection of medicine and sports have generated as much public interest as sports-related concussions - especially among youth. Despite growing awareness of sports-related concussions and campaigns to educate athletes, coaches, physicians, and parents of young athletes about concussion recognition and management, confusion and controversy persist in many areas. Currently, diagnosis is based primarily on the symptoms reported by the individual rather than on objective diagnostic markers, and there is little empirical evidence for the optimal degree and duration of physical rest needed to promote recovery or the best timing and approach for returning to full physical activity. Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture reviews the science of sports-related concussions in youth from elementary school through young adulthood, as well as in military personnel and their dependents. This report recommends actions that can be taken by a range of audiences - including research funding agencies, legislatures, state and school superintendents and athletic directors, military organizations, and equipment manufacturers, as well as youth who participate in sports and their parents - to improve what is known about concussions and to reduce their occurrence. Sports-Related Concussions in Youth finds that while some studies provide useful information, much remains unknown about the extent of concussions in youth; how to diagnose, manage, and prevent concussions; and the short- and long-term consequences of concussions as well as repetitive head impacts that do not result in concussion symptoms. The culture of sports negatively influences athletes' self-reporting of concussion symptoms and their adherence to return-to-play guidance. Athletes, their teammates, and, in some cases, coaches and parents may not fully appreciate the health threats posed by concussions. Similarly, military recruits are immersed in a culture that includes devotion to duty and service before self, and the critical nature of concussions may often go unheeded. According to Sports-Related Concussions in Youth, if the youth sports community can adopt the belief that concussions are serious injuries and emphasize care for players with concussions until they are fully recovered, then the culture in which these athletes perform and compete will become much safer. Improving understanding of the extent, causes, effects, and prevention of sports-related concussions is vitally important for the health and well-being of youth athletes. The findings and recommendations in this report set a direction for research to reach this goal.

        Women Writing After Concussion

by E. D. Morin and Jane Cawthorne

In Impact, 21 women writers consider the effects of concussion on their personal and professional lives. The anthology bears witness to the painstaking work that goes into redefining identity and regaining creative practice after a traumatic event. By sharing their complex and sometimes incomplete healing journeys, these women convey the magnitude of a disability which is often doubted, overlooked, and trivialized, in part because of its invisibility. Impact offers compassion and empathy to all readers and families healing from concussion and other types of trauma. Contributors: Adèle Barclay, Jane Cawthorne, Tracy Wai de Boer, Stephanie Everett, Mary-Jo Fetterly, Rayanne Haines, Jane Harris, Kyla Jamieson, Alexis Kienlen, Claire Lacey, E. D. Is Soccer Bad for Children's Heads?

Summary of the IOM Workshop on Neuropsychological Consequences of Head Impact in Youth Soccer

by Margie Patlak and Janet E. Joy, Board on Neuroscience and Behavioral Health

To explore whether soccer playing puts youths at risk for lasting brain damage, the Institute of Medicine brought together experts in head injury, sports medicine, pediatrics, and bioengineering. In a workshop entitled "Youth Soccer: Neuropsychological Consequences of Head Impact in Sports," that was held in Washington D.C. on October 12, 2001, these experts presented the scientific evidence for long-term consequences of head injury from youth sports, especially soccer, possible approaches to reduce the risks, and policy issues raised by the subject. Some of the findings presented by the speakers raised concerns, such as the high concussion rate of high school soccer players, the frequent persistence of impaired brain functions even after other symptoms of a concussion disappear, and the need for a better understanding of when it is safe for players to resume playing after they have had a concussion. But other findings were reassuring, such as studies that suggest that with the type of soccer balls used in the United States, heading is not likely to cause brain injury in youths, nor is playing soccer likely to cause permanent brain damage. This is a summary of the reports from these experts in the field, and the lively discussions that followed them. Topics covered include: causes of head injuries in soccer; how to detect a concussion; the biology of concussion; studies of soccer and football players; the role of protective headgear; and policy implications, such as how to decide when a concussed player should be allowed to return to the playing field.

        The Complete Callaghan Tetralogy

        by Kim Ekemar

THE COMPLETE CALLAGHAN TETRALOGY thriller series consists of four books:    THE LOST IDENTITY CASUALTIES Coming out of a coma, Matthias Callaghan finds himself tied to a hospital bed, wrapped in bandages and suffering from amnesia. As he gradually recovers his memories, Callaghan discovers that he – in a case of mistaken identity – has been mutilated and subject to a full face transplant while being comatose. After being released from the hospital Callaghan spends months in solitary depression using his intelligence to plot his revenge on the five people who have caused him the loss of his identity and former privileged life. What he learns the hard way is that his revenge must encompass the Russian Mafia, a treacherous lawyer, his former business partner, the wife he recently has divorced and his estranged father.    WHERE THE BONES OF A BURIED RAT LIE After a second face transplant, Matthias Callaghan eases into a different life together with his new girlfriend Samantha. Not until too late does he realise that the Metropolitan police, the Russian Mafia’s legal adviser, a gangster boss named Flint and a group of swindled octogenarian ladies continue their attempts to confront the person they believe he is. The sudden reappearance of his ex-wife makes his life trickier still. Then, when his former business partner is released from prison, Callaghan is sued for millions. Hard pressed from all sides, Callaghan decides his only way out is to adopt one of his former identities and negotiate an assassination.    THE QUARRY AT THE CROSSROADS When he’s taken in for questioning by the police, Matthias Callaghan is faced with two options: to maintain the identity he has been obliged to adopt or to reveal his real one. For different reasons, in either case he risks going to prison and losing a fortune. Callaghan realises that he must flee Europe and decides to start a new life in Australia. After selling off everything he owns, he travels to USA to shake off any pursuers. Unknown to him, he’s followed by an assassin who catches up with him at a desert hotel, Callaghan changes his escape plan and crosses the border to Mexico. Unaware of the extent of the manhunt mounted to find him, he’s all of a sudden preyed upon by the FBI, Interpol, two competing drug cartels, a London gangster kingpin and the Russian Mafia.    THE TOLLBOOTH IN THE LABYRINTH Chased across the world by police and criminals alike, Matthias Callaghan eludes them by hiding in Australia. With his girlfriend Samantha, he starts a new life in the belief that he hasn’t left traces behind allowing Interpol, the Russian Mafia and a London gangster named Flint to find him. Six months later he finds out that he’s wrong. Once again on the run, he and Samantha escapes to Bali where they try to come to grips with Callaghan’s quandary. The pair settles on a daring plan to remove all threats to Callaghan’s existence and allow him to recover his true identity.

        Veterinary Anatomy

The Regional Gross Anatomy of Domestic Animals (Completes in 2 Parts)

        by Vitthal R.Bhamburkar & Sanjay B. Banubakode

The text of this book with regional approach of teaching and studying veterinary gross anatomy has been divided in six parts. The first part comprises the basics of veterinary anatomy described in the conventional form of systemic anatomy while the remaining five parts comprise region wise description of gross anatomy. Each of these parts contains the description of all anatomical structures viz. bones, joints, muscles, viscera, blood vessels, lymphatics nerves, etc located in the respective region of the animal body viz. head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis and the fore and hind limb. Bovine animal, the ox, has been considered as a model species for detail description of the anatomical features, while the major differences or remarkable features in other species like horse, dog, sheep and goat, pig and fowl have been described under a separate heading as Comparative Anatomy at the end of each section. In addition to this, a separate section on Applied Anatomy has been introduced at the end of each regional part. This will make it easy to understand the applications of the anatomical features that form the basis of surgical, diagnostic, medical and obstetrical techniques in the solution of clinical disorders which is the main purpose of regional pattern of learning the anatomy. Because of these distinctive features, the book has become a little voluminous and therefore, had to be split into two volumes. Part-I comprises the first three parts viz-General Systemic Anatomy, Anatomy of Head and Neck and the Anatomy of Thorax while the Part-II comprises the next three parts viz- the Anatomy of Abdomen and Pelvis, the Anatomy of Fore limb and the Anatomy of Hind Limb.

        Science for Heretics

Why so much of science is wrong

        by Barrie Condon

WHY SO MUCH OF SCIENCE IS WRONG! Barrie Condon shows that science is broken Science is everywhere, our medicines, our transport, what we eat and drink. Like it or not, we can’t make real progress without it. There’s just one dilemma ... What if there are profound problems with all aspects of scien􀆟 fi c theory and methods? Could it be that the idea of universal laws underpinning reality is a falsehood and, as a result, we need more and more scien􀆟 sts, and more and more compu􀆟 ng power, to produce greater and greater elabora􀆟 ons of our theories to make them fi t inconvenient experimental data? For the fi rst 􀆟 me, we have a book that dares to summarise these profound concerns in a way that is accessible to the general reader, who lacks a scien􀆟 fi c background. It also provides a warning to Mankind of the risks we run by not acknowledging the, o􀅌 en, hollow founda􀆟 ons on which science is built.

        Acts of Terror and Contrition

a nuclear fable and eight stories

        by Daniel Melnick

ACTS OF TERROR AND CONTRITION) is both a political novella about Israel and a literary thriller telling the unofficial story of Israeli responses to Saddam Hussein’s missile attacks during the 1990-1 Iraq War – and the possibility that his missiles might carry nuclear warheads “to burn Israel to the ground,” as Tarik Aziz said then. This “nuclear fable” presents the secret history of the Mossad Special Operations Chief’s covert threats to force world governments to face what is at stake should Iraq have launched a nuclear attack. Desperate and unyielding in the face of Saddam’s threat, the Chief, Arie Schneider, puts a renegade plan into place, even as he confronts the machinations of the deeply-divided Israeli government. Shadowing all this is the presence of the first Intifada, an Arab mother, and particularly her Islamist son, who plots his own act of terror. Enmeshed in the nuclear crisis, Arie must yet face his troubled wife, their two children, and above all his father, Rami, a holocaust survivor and retired diplomat. In opposition to the extremity of Arie’s plan, the old man summonses all his wisdom and his wily, struggling will to confront his son (in an echo of the biblical sacrifice of Isaac). Accompanying the novella are 8 STORIES OF THE EIGHTIES: In “Einstein’s Sorrow,” the first story after the novella, a wry secular Jewish owner of a New York toy company is visited one night in 1980 (the great physicist’s centennial year) by the spirit of the genius, and together the two Jews mourn the development of the nuclear bomb. In “Your Name is Hiroshima,” set in the mid-eighties, a young professor creates a haunted poem in response to the film “Hiroshima, Mon Amour,” as he faces the needs of wife, mentor, department chair, during a visit to campus by a famed Russian poet. The third and fourth stories are told by two elderly characters – an Armenian-American in “Taste of the Sun” and, in “Contrapuntal Piece,” the Greek widow of the eminent German-Jewish expatriate pianist from Hungry Generations; each character seeks the clarity to go on in the face of maddening infirmities and the incomprehension of others. In the fifth story “Before the Revolution,” a former political activist takes his family on a European vacation in 1984, and on an Italian train he faces his youthful double, a fiery student anarchist. The final three stories in Terror and Contrition chronicle the life of Joe Mubar, a Syrian-Italian American artist. “Triptych” tells his story over 30 years from his abused childhood, through his youthful wildness, to his struggle to find his balance in marriage. The second story – “Odalisque” – presents Joe, after divorce, in his sexual collision with a woman in the college town where he teaches art. “The Fall of the Berlin Wall” – the third story in the trilogy – portrays a last chance Mubar has to break the cycle of failed communication and to right himself as a father to his teen-aged son in the America of 1989.
