The atmosphere of modern life in the novel is achieved through the depiction of other characters such as the hero’s classmate and good friend Zhang Xiaochen, his sister Ke’er, his uncle Baolin and his English teacher Li Qinsong, a man of dubious identity, thus adding to the enjoyment of the book.
