        Culture in Manchester

        Institutions and urban change since 1850

        by Janet Wolff

        This book brings together studies of cultural institutions in Manchester from 1850 to the present day, giving an unprecedented account of the city's cultural evolution. These bring to light the remarkable range of Manchester's contribution to modern cultural life, including the role of art education, popular theatre, religion, pleasure gardens, clubs and societies. The chapters show the resilience and creativity of Manchester's cultural institutions since 1850, challenging any simple narrative of urban decline following the erosion of Lancashire's industrial base, at the same time illustrating the range of activities across the social classes. This book will appeal to everyone interested in the cultural life of the city of Manchester, including cultural historians, sociologists and urban geographers, as well as general readers with interests in the city. It is written by leading international authorities, including Viv Gardner, Stephen Milner, Mike Savage, Bill Williams and Janet Wolff. ;

        Ja, unsere Kreise berühren sich

        Briefe

        by Christa Wolf, Charlotte Wolff

        Im Frühjahr 1983 hat Christa Wolf gerade die aufsehenerregenden Frankfurter Poetikvorlesungen und ihre große Erzählung Kassandra veröffentlicht. Zur gleichen Zeit arbeitet die Psychologin und Ärztin Charlotte Wolff – eine deutsche Jüdin, die 1933 zuerst nach Paris und dann nach London emigrierte – an einer umfangreichen Monographie zu Magnus Hirschfeld, dem Pionier der Erforschung menschlicher Sexualität. Zwei Frauen, die sich nie persönlich begegnen werden. Aber in den drei Jahren ihres Austauschs entsteht ein so engagierter wie anrührender Briefwechsel über Arbeitsvorhaben, über den Alltag, über die Stellung der Künstlerin in einer männlich bestimmten Gesellschaft – und es ergibt sich das Bild einer stetig wachsenden Freundschaft.

        Hinter Mauern

        Geschlossene Grenzen als Gefahr für die offene Gesellschaft

        by Frank Wolff, Volker M. Heins

        »Wir müssen diese Bilder aushalten«, sagte Sachsens Ministerpräsident Michael Kretschmer im November 2021 angesichts frierender Geflüchteter an der Grenze zwischen Polen und Belarus. Seine Worte machen deutlich, was oft in Vergessenheit gerät: Grenzen sind nicht nur Hindernisse für Menschen, die sie von außerhalb überwinden wollen. Sie verändern auch die Gesellschaften, die sich abzuschotten versuchen.Volker M. Heins und Frank Wolff zeigen, welche Wirkung Mauern und die Abwehr von Migration »nach innen« entfalten: Das Drängen der EU auf »sichere Außengrenzen« untergräbt das europäische Versprechen auf Frieden und Rechtsstaatlichkeit. Letztendlich gefährden befestigte Grenzen gerade jene demokratischen Werte und Strukturen, die sie zu schützen vorgeben.

        Writing otherwise

        Experiments in cultural criticism

        by Jackie Stacey, Janet Wolff

        Writing otherwise is a collection of essays by established feminist and cultural critics interested in experimenting with new styles of expression. Leading figures in their field, such as Marianne Hirsch, Lynne Pearce, Griselda Pollock, Carol Smart, Jackie Stacey and Janet Wolff, all risk new ways of writing about themselves and their subjects. Aimed at both general and academic readers interested in how scholarly writing might be more innovative and creative, this collection introduces the personal, the poetic and the experimental into the frame of cultural criticism. This collection of essays is highly interdisciplinary and contributes to debates in sociology, history, anthropology, art history, cultural and media studies and gender studies. ;
