        British Business History, 1720–1994

        by J. F. Wilson

        This textbook covers over three centuries of British business history from 1720 to the present day. Wilson argues that company culture has been the most important component in the evolution of business organisations and management practices. The influence of business culture on firms' structure, sources of finance, and the background and training of senior managers are investigated to show its pivotal importance in determining business performance. The book also examines how British business adapted to changing economic, institutional and socio-cultural environments yet failed to develop the kind of managerial hierarchies typified by American and German corporations. Wilson uses an extensive number of case studies to support his conclusions. The book covers the subject chronologically with an extra chapter comparing Britain's experience with the USA, Germany and Japan. ;

        Order and conflict

        Anthony Ascham and English political thought (1648–50)

        by Peter Lake, Marco Barducci, Anthony Milton, Jason Peacey, Alexandra Gajda

        This book provides a careful and systematic analysis of Anthony Ascham's career and writings for the first time in English. During the crucial period between the Second Civil War and the establishment of the English Republic, when he served as official pamphleteer of the Parliament and the republican government, Ascham put forward a complex argument in support of Parliament's claims for obedience which drew on the political thought of Grotius, Hobbes, Selden, Filmer and Machiavelli. He combined ideas taken from these authors and turned them into a powerful instrument of propaganda to be deployed in the service of the political agenda of his Independent patrons in Parliament. This investigation of Ascham's works brings together an intellectual analysis of his political thought and an exploration of the interaction between politics, propaganda and political ideas.

        Essen lernen

        Wo unsere Ernährungsgewohnheiten herkommen und wie wir sie ändern können

        by Bee Wilson, Laura Su Bischoff

        Mögen Sie Rosenkohl? Lieben Sie Brokkoli? Oder ist Fleisch Ihr Gemüse? Dass die Geschmäcker verschieden sind, ist eine Binsenweisheit. Aber nirgendwo sind die Vorlieben und Abneigungen so ausgeprägt wie beim Essen und so immun gegen gute Argumente. Nicht nur Eltern wissen davon ein Lied zu singen. Warum ist das so? Und was können wir tun, um anders, besser, zu essen? Bee Wilson hat sich auf eine spannende Reise zu den Ursprüngen unserer Ernährungsgewohnheiten begeben, mit der neuesten Forschungsliteratur sowie ihren eigenen Erfahrungen als Mutter von drei Kindern im Gepäck. Sie hat mit Psychologen und Ernährungsexperten gesprochen, Schulkantinen besucht und zahlreiche »Essbiographien« zusammengetragen. Das Ergebnis ist so lehrreich wie ermutigend: Geschmack ist kein Schicksal. Welche Speisen wir mögen, ob wir essen wie ein Spatz oder wie ein Scheunendrescher, ist uns nicht in die Wiege gelegt. Wir lernen es, und zwar in der Kindheit, am Esstisch der Familie, unter Einfluss zahlreicher Faktoren. Und wir können umlernen. Bee Wilson zeigt uns in ihrem neuen Buch, wie das geht, ohne dabei aus den Augen zu verlieren, was vielleicht das Wichtigste ist: die Freude am Essen.

Da hilft nur eins: dranbleiben und den Mut nicht verlieren. Ein unbeirrbares Vögelchen zum Verlieben – erfrischend in Szene gesetzt von Henrike Wilson!

        Anthony Burgess and America

        The untold story behind the American influences on Burgess’s life, work and legacy

        by Christopher W Thurley

        Anthony Burgess and America is a biographical and critical analysis of Burgess's commentary on and relationship with the United States of America. Utilising Burgess's entire canon and newly discovered materials to assess Burgess's views on America, this book also evaluates the American inspirations in five Burgess novels. This essential addition to Burgess scholarship tells the story of a nearly unexplored area of Burgess's life. For the first time ever, Burgess's American experiences, work, and documented communication, lectures, interviews and public utterances are brought together to assess where these commentaries overlapped with his fiction. The result is a complex personal and public history about one of Britain's greatest twentieth century authors and their immersion into and interaction with American culture in the second half of the twentieth century.

        Secret Shakespeare

        Studies in theatre, religion and resistance

        by Richard Wilson

        Shakespeare's Catholic context was the most important literary discovery of the last century. No biography of the Bard is now complete without chapters on the paranoia and persecution in which he was educated, or the treason which engulfed his family. Whether to suffer outrageous fortune or take up arms in suicidal resistance was, as Hamlet says, 'the question' that fired Shakespeare's stage. In 'Secret Shakespeare' Richard Wilson asks why the dramatist remained so enigmatic about his own beliefs, and so silent on the atrocities he survived. Shakespeare constructed a drama not of discovery, like his rivals, but of darkness, deferral, evasion and disguise, where, for all his hopes of a 'golden time' of future toleration, 'What's to come' is always unsure. Whether or not 'He died a papist', it is because we can never 'pluck out the heart' of his mystery that Shakespeare's plays retain their unique potential to resist. This is a fascinating work, which will be essential reading for all scholars of Shakespeare and Renaissance studies. ;

        Anthony Asquith

        by Tom Ryall, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        This is the first comprehensive critical study of Anthony Asquith. Ryall sets the director's work in the context of British cinema from the silent period to the 1960s, examining the artistic and cultural influences which shaped his films. Asquith's silent films were compared favourably to those of his eminent contemporary Alfred Hitchcock, but his career faltered during the 1930s. However, the success of Pygmalion (1938) and French Without Tears (1939), based on plays by George Bernard Shaw and Terence Rattigan, together with his significant contributions to wartime British cinema, re-established him as a leading British film maker. Asquith's post-war career includes several pictures in collaboration with Terence Rattigan, and the definitive adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest (1951), but his versatility is demonstrated in a number of modest genre films including The Woman in Question (1950), The Young Lovers (1954) and Orders to Kill (1958). ;

        Ein Mann von Welt

        Roman

        by Antoine Wilson

        Oppen Porter, ein gutmütiger Riese, ein Kindskopf, stirbt. Glaubt er jedenfalls. 27 Jahre lang war sein Leben ereignislos, dann ging alles ganz schnell. Er hat seinen Vater begraben, er hat zum ersten Mal seinen kalifornischen Geburtsort verlassen und ist in die Stadt gezogen, er hat in einem Fastfood-Restaurant gearbeitet und einem Freund beigestanden, er hat sein Glück gesucht und gefunden. Und jetzt liegt er, davon ist er überzeugt, auf dem Totenbett. Doch bevor er abtritt, will er seinem ungeborenen Sohn hinterlassen, was er auf seinem abenteuerlichen Ausflug gelernt hat. Also schaltet er das Tonband an und erzählt: von seinen Begegnungen mit Menschen, die alle glauben, ihr Weg sei der beste für ihn. Von Carmen, die ihn so nimmt, wie er ist. Und von seiner Entschlossenheit, ein Mann von Welt zu werden. Antoine Wilson hat mit Oppen Porter eine Figur geschaffen, die uns die Welt mit anderen Augen sehen lässt – einen heiligen Einfaltspinsel, der jede Aufgabe, die ihm sein neues Leben stellt, mit kindlicher Neugier und entwaffnender Ehrlichkeit besteht. »Ein Mann von Welt« ist ein Buch voller Wärme und Humor, das uns etwas Wichtiges lehrt: den Wert von Eigensinn.
