The Wall, Etc. by Hamutal Bar-Yosef is a collection of eighteen powerfully written stories, some of which are based on true stories. Israel’s celebrated writer Amos Oz called the collection "especially strong and heartbreaking." Hamutal Bar-Yosef creates in The Wall, Etc., a tragicomic, sometimes grotesque slice-of-life narrative that portrays the human condition as the yawning abyss between desires and reality. She expresses great empathy and respect for the characters she depicts, and she enters their inner worlds with a breathtaking sensitivity. Hamutal Bar-Yosef is a well-known Israeli writer, poet, translator, and scholar. She was born in a kibbutz to parents who lost their family in the Holocaust. Her only brother was killed in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. At age twenty, the author married the playwright Yosef Bar-Yosef and had four children; one committed suicide at sixteen. She provided for her family first as a high school teacher, and then by writing guides for teachers. The author didn’t write her PhD dissertation until after turning forty, and she became a professor of Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University. She has published eight scholarly books and fifteen books of poetry, and she has won numerous distinguished prizes for her poetry. Her collection of stories, The Wall, Etc., (originally titled Music) won the ASI (Association of Israeli Writers) prize. Professor Bar-Yosef has translated poetry and prose fiction from English, French, and Russian. An English-language North-American edition was published in early 2019 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc., CA. Marguerite Duras wurde am 4. April 1914 in der ehemaligen französischen Kolonie Gia Dinh, dem heutigen Vietnam als Marguerite Donnadieu geboren und starb am 3. März 1996 in Paris. Sie besuchte das Lycée Français in Saigon und machte 1931 Abitur. Ein Jahr später siedelte die Familie nach Paris um, wo sie an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Paris und an der École des Sciences Politiques studierte. Von 1935 bis 1941 arbeitete sie als Sekretärin im Ministère des Colonies. 1939 heiratete sie Robert Antelme. Beide waren ab 1940 in der Résistance aktiv. Antelme wurde später ins Konzentrationslager Dachau deportiert. 1943 erschien ihr Debütroman Les Impudents (Die Schamlosen) unter dem Pseudonym Marguerite Duras, welchem keine besondere Aufmerksamkeit in der Öffentlichkeit zuteil kam. Mit Un Barrage contre le Pacifique (Heiße Küste), das 1950 erschien, hatte Duras größeren Erfolg. Sie schrieb nicht nur Romane, sondern verfasste auch Theaterstücke und trat als Filmregisseurin in Erscheinung.

This interdisciplinary volume explores the role of images and narratives in different borderscapes. Written by experienced scholars in the field, Border images, border narratives provides fresh insight into how borders, borderscapes, and migration are imagined and narrated in public and private spheres. Offering new ways to approach the political aesthetics of the border and its ambiguities, this volume makes a valuable contribution to the methodological renewal of border studies and presents ways of discussing cultural representations of borders and related processes. Influenced by the thinking of philosopher Jacques Rancière, this timely volume argues that narrated and mediated images of borders and borderscapes are central to the political process, as they contribute to the public negotiation of borders and address issues such as the in/visiblity of migrants and the formation of alternative borderscapes. The contributions analyse narratives and images in literary texts, political and popular imagery, surveillance data, border art, and documentaries, as well as problems related to borderland identities, migration, and trauma. The case studies provide a highly comparative range of geographical contexts ranging from Northern Europe and Britain, via Mediterranean and Mexican-USA borderlands, to Chinese borderlands from the perspectives of critical theory, literary studies, social anthropology, media studies, and political geography.

Hamutal Bar-Yosef entwirft in Die Mauer usw., eine tragikomische, manchmal groteske Lebensabschnittserzählung, die die condition humaine als den gähnenden Abgrund zwischen Verlangen und Wirklichkeit darstellt. Sie beweist großes Einfühlungsvermögen und Respekt für die Figuren ihrer Erzählungen und breitet ihre inneren Welten mit großer Sensibilität vor unseren Augen aus. Hamutal Bar-Yosef ist eine bekannte israelische Schriftstellerin, Dichterin, Übersetzerin und Gelehrte. Sie wurde in einem Kibbuz als Tochter von Eltern geboren, die ihre Familie durch den Holocaust verloren hatten. Ihr einziger Bruder wurde 1948 im israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg getötet. Im Alter von zwanzig Jahren heiratete die Autorin den Dramatiker Josef Bar-Josef und hatte vier Kinder. Eines ihrer Kinder beging mit sechzehn Jahren Selbstmord. Sie versorgte ihre Familie zuerst als Gymnasiallehrerin und schrieb dann Leitfäden für Lehrer. Die Autorin schrieb ihre Doktorarbeit erst mit vierzig Jahren und wurde Professorin für hebräische Literatur an der Ben-Gurion-Universität. Sie hat acht wissenschaftliche Bücher und fünfzehn Gedichtbände veröffentlicht und zahlreiche Preise für ihre Gedichte gewonnen. Ihre Sammlung von Geschichten, Die Mauer usw., (ursprünglich betitelt Musik) gewann den ASI-Preis (Association of Israeli Writers). Bar-Yosef hat Gedichte und Prosa aus dem Englischen, Französischen und Russischen übersetzt. Eine englischsprachige nordamerikanische Ausgabe wurde Anfang 2019 von Samuel Wachtmans Sons, Inc., CA, veröffentlicht.184 Seiten. Eine französischsprachige Ausgabe ist zur Veröffentlichung im Sommer 2019 geplant.

Vom Januar 1971 bis zu seinem Tod im Juni 1984 hatte Michel Foucault einen Lehrstuhl am College de France in Paris inne, und zwar für die Geschichte der Denksysteme. Zu seinen Pflichten gehörte es, öffentliche, für jedermann zugängliche Vorträge zu halten. In diesen Vorträgen wurden jeweils die neuesten Forschungsergebnisse präsentiert. Von Michel Foucaults Vorlesungen sind die Manuskripte und Tonbandmitschnitte erhalten. Auf ihrer Grundlage wurde der vorliegende Band erarbeitet. Diese Tatsache erklärt, daß mit den hier vorgelegten Vorlesungen aus den Jahren 1975/76 ein neuer Michel Foucault zu entdecken ist. Neu in zweierlei Hinsicht. Zum einen kann man verfolgen, wie er beim Reden seine Gedanken entwickelt. Damit bietet sich ein leichter Zugang zu den Grundvorstellungen dieses Philosophen. Ein neuer Foucault ist auch in zweiter Hinsicht zu entdecken, weil in seinen Vorlesungen zugleich ein Stück Bildung, sein persönliches Engagement und ein direkter Bezug zur Gegenwart sichtbar werden. In Verteidigung der Gesellschaft geht Michel Foucault der Frage nach, inwieweit Machtverhältnisse nach dem Modell des Krieges analysiert werden können. Seine im doppelten Wortsinn polemischen Ausführungen lassen sich in der Frage zusammenfassen, ob man den Aphorismus von Clausewitz nicht auf den Kopf stellen und behaupten müsse, daß die Politik die Fortsetzung des Krieges mit anderen Mitteln sei.
