The Sworn Sword, or the Voice of Blood

        by Arenyev Volodymyr

It was in time immemorial, now forgotten. Then heroes and monsters walked on earth, and the former could not always be distinguished from the latter. And the word in those days was sharper than the sword, although the swords then knew how to pronounce their sharp word... The new story by the well-known Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Arenyev, laureate of the BBC Book of the Year 2019 award, tells about the adventures of the sword and those who owned it, journeys and persecutions, magic and spells, as well as about Odin Stoymenny, Ms. Bramnytsya and two desperate men who dared to challenge them. The Sworn Sword is an independent story in the world of The Sworn Treasure.

History of Ukraine from KGB Secret Files

        by Volodymyr Viatrovych

The unknown and classified KGB history of the largest country in Europe - Ukraine is the history of people, events, documents and files. The files have answers to many questions. The most important of which - why did a war begin again in Europe? Why is it so important for Russia to conquer Ukraine? Why are Ukrainians putting up such a powerful resistance? Historian Volodymyr Viatrovych, who declassified the secret archives of the Soviet special services from the Cheka to the KGB, talks about the history of Ukraine, the USSR and Eastern Europe from 1918 to 1991. The reader, is offered, along with various heroes and traitors, those who thought they were in control of events, and those who thought they had no power over them, to recreate the nearly century-old chess game between the Ukrainian liberation movement and the creators of the "prison of nations." Described in reports and recreated by a historian, this work looks at the cunning “special operations”, deadly moves, information wars and complex games among several players that are all an attempt to find an answer to the question: what creates our destiny - human will or circumstances?

Mondegreen (Songs about Death and Love)

        by Volodymyr Rafeyenko

It’s possible not to know what a “mondegreen” is, but it’s unlikely that one can completely defend against it. He who is blessed to live is also doomed to make mistakes. For example, to perceive select sayings in a distorted manner, and consequently - to misinterpret them, sometimes to absurdity. But is it possible, having moved as an adult from the Russian-speaking Donetsk to the hardly Ukrainian-speaking Kyiv, to quickly learn the Ukrainian language? Yes, possible. What’s more: one can even be someone like Volodymyr Rafeyenko, a Russian-speaking writer of significant age and renown, and then, having ended up in Kyiv, master Ukrainian to such a degree so as to write an amazing novel in it. In particular, a novel about the immersion of a Russian-speaking migrant into the joyous and sorrowful element of the Ukrainian language. And also, a novel about his not wanting to remain a passive object of Russia’s “protection”. But above all, it’s a novel about how poorly the different parts of our multilingual Ukraine heard each other, thus turning one another into an utter “mondegreen”. Is there still a chance to solve this misunderstanding? Unknown. But first we have to try, at the very least, to listen carefully to one another: maybe then we’ll manage to decipher all this distorted noise.

Bridges Instead of Walls, or What Unites Ukrainians?

        by Tetiana Teren

In this collection of essays, twenty Ukrainian intellectuals reflect on the phenomenon of social bridges and walls. Why do they both exist? Do bridges always bring understanding? Or do they perhaps sometimes allow crossing boundaries? Do walls necessarily separate? Or do they occasionally protect? With whom and how should we build bridges, and from whom shall we isolate by walls? The result of the media project of the Ukrainian branch of the International PEN Club, published in the New Time publication, is now under one cover. On the pages of the book, you will find essays by the following authors: Kateryna Kalytko, Kateryna Botanova, Vakhtang Kebuladze, Zoya Kazanzhy, Ostap Slyvinskyi, Olena Stiazhkina, Larysa Denysenko, Myroslava Barchuk, Viktoriya Amelina, Vitaliy Ponomariov, Vasyl Makhno, Volodymyr Rafeenko, Mykola Riabchuk, Volodymyr Yermolenko, Svitlana Pyrkalo, Borys Gudziak, Ihor Isichenko, Halyna Vdovychenko, Pavlo Kazarin, Vitaliy Portnykov. Flowing ideologies. Ideas and politics in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries

        by Volodymyr Yermolenko

"Flowing Ideologies" is a detailed and unexpected history of ideas in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book is about how the concepts and metaphors born in the era of the French Revolution continued to live in the totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century, how the concepts of going through death, the holy criminal, the victim-messiah, the renewing catastrophe feed the history of the last two centuries, inspiring ideological allies and antipodes. It is also a detailed and ruthless analysis of the main ideological monsters of our time: racism, communism, Nazism, fascism, and their mixtures. The book is written on the crossroad of different disciplines: philosophy, history of ideas, political science and history of literature.

        Time of scattered stones

        by Volodymyr Samoylenko

How difficult it is sometimes to separate the present from the days of the past... Who knows how the meeting of former friends will go, and whether it will happen at all?... Who knows... Has it come time to collect stones?... And if so, where to look for those stones? On the territory of the Motherland or in hot Africa? Or maybe in your own future? Questions, questions... Where will you find the answers and are they necessary?... No, the scientist-historian has not reached a final conclusion about this - the main character of the surprisingly subtle novel "The Time of Scattered Stones", a novel that will immerse you in the past, in stormy nineties, and will push out the cynical 2000s. In one day, our hero will cross at least two paths that sometimes run parallel, sometimes cross, and sometimes diverge, never to converge again. Friends, classmates, enemies. Funny modern realities, no less funny, and sometimes tragic events of the past. Crazy adventures, passions, betrayals. Stones, stones, stones... Has it come time to collect it, or maybe that time is still ahead?...

        The Voices of Babyn Yar

        by Marianna Kiyanovska

The poems in The Voices of Babyn Yar convey the experiences and emotions of ordinary people going through the tragic events of Babyn Yar massacre in Kyiv. Conceived as a tribute to the dead, the book raises difficult questions about memory, responsibility, and commemoration of those who had witnessed the horrors of human suffering. The book is illustrated by sketches of the Ukrainian artists Ada Rybachuk and Volodymyr Melnychenko. The same sketches were used for the construction of the monument commemorating the victims of Babyn Yar. The works of the artist Zinoviy Tolkachov "Talescoten", series "Majdanek", 1944, as well as a photo of Dmytro Peysakhov from the series "Babyn Yar" are also used in the publication.

Frontier Identity: Odesa in 20th century

        by Yaroslav Polishchuk

Flipping through the pages of the cultural history of Odesa in the 20th century, the author of the book analyses the frontier identity that developed in this peculiar city. In the first part of the book, the general processes that determined the cultural face of Odesa are analysed, in the second, portraits of prominent artists are presented - Volodymyr Zhabotynskyi, Petro Leshchenko, Mykhailo Zhuk, Boris Necherda, Boris Khersonskyi. Each of them in their own way embodied the image of the beach and sea city in its changing identity and constant charm. And if the above personalities are forgotten today, then we have a good opportunity to get to know and appreciate them more deeply, at the same time rethinking the phenomenon of Odesa in the 20th century.

        Knights of the Famished Renaissance

        by Dmytro Horbachov

The phenomenon of the Ukrainian avant-garde was first revealed to the Western world in 1973 at the "Tatlin's dream" London exhibition where for the first time, world-class paintings by little known Ukrainian avant-garde artists Vasyl Yermylov and Oleksandr Bohomazov were exhibited. This famous show raised awareness also of other world-famous masters who, by origin, upbringing, self identification, and national traditions were associated with Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odesa. Apart from the above-mentioned artists, the book mentions “the most faithful son of Ukraine” Davyd Burliuk, as well as Kazymyr Malevych, a Pole who considered himself Ukrainian; Volodymyr Tatlin, a professor of Kyiv Art Institute and bandura player; Oleksandra Ekster, a founder of the Ukrainian school of constructivist scenography; artists of the "Culture League"; Oleksandr Arkhypenko, a phenomenal sculptor. Supplemented with extensive cultural studies and personal memories of the author, the book is designed to present the reader with a complete picture of the origins and formation of the Ukrainian artistic avant-garde. Compiled by Oleksiy Sinchenko.
