        Sir Thomas More

        By Anthony Munday and others

        by Vittorio Gabrieli, Giorgio Melchiori

        The best edition of the play in print. Gives a radical re-examination of the manuscript, and relates step by step to the process by which the play acquired its final form. Accounts for every single word and mark found in the manuscript - reproduces rejected or alternative passages at the end of the text. Includes a detailed discussion of the authorship and date of the original text and so-called additions. Particularly important now as the play feeds into the present speculation concerning Shakespeare's Catholic roots. ;

        Marcel Pagnol

        by Brett Bowles, Diana Holmes, Robert Ingram

        Though long ignored or dismissed by film critics and scholars, Marcel Pagnol (1895-1974) was among the most influential auteurs of his era. This comprehensive overview of Pagnol's career, the first ever published in English, highlights his unique place in French cinema as a self-sufficient writer-producer-director and his contribution to the long-term evolution of filmmaking in a broader European context. In addition to reassessing the converted playwright's controversial prioritisation of speech over image, the book juxtaposes Pagnol's sunny rural melodramas with the dark, urban variety of poetic realism practised by influential peers such as Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné. In his penchant for outdoor location shooting and ethnographic authenticity, as well as his stubborn attachment to independent, artisanal production values, Pagnol served as a precursor to the French New Wave and Italian Neo-Realism, inspiring the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Vittorio De Sica, and Roberto Rossellini. ;

        Consumer Acceptance of Genetically Modified Foods

        by Edited by Robert E Evenson, Vittorio Santaniello

        In recent years there have been increasing concerns about the potential health risks of genetically modified foods. Consumer perceptions vary between countries, but are probably most pronounced in Europe and least in North America. These have had a profound and controversial effect on the development of markets for GM products.This book presents a compilation of studies of consumer acceptance of GM foods. These studies utilized different methods and evidence including: price and expenditure data; experimental methods; "willingness to pay"; consumer attitudes; and economic consequences.

        Regulation of Agricultural Biotechnology

        by Edited by Robert E Evenson, Vittorio Santaniello

        The regulatory systems in place prior to the development and expansion of agricultural biotechnology are still responding to this new form of technology. Such systems include trade law, intellectual property law, contract law, environmental regulations and biosafety regulations.This book reviews these regulatory changes and consists of 24 chapters developed from papers presented at a conference of the International Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology Research, held in Italy in July 2002. It primarily considers the relationship between these changes and innovation, market development and international trade.

        Agricultural Values of Plant Genetic Resources

        by Edited by Robert E Evenson, Douglas Gollin, Vittorio Santaniello

        International concern over the threat to species and ecosystems caused by human activities is at an all time high, which may result in high costs to present and future generations. The economic costs and benefits associated with the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources of actual or potential value for food and agriculture is largely unknown. Economic instruments that can encourage implementation of socially optimal genetic resource conservation strategies as well as the sharing of the real benefits and costs are a useful measurement tool. This book is an edited compilation of papers from the Symposium on the Economics of Valuation and Conservation of Genetic Resources for Agriculture held in Rome in May 1996. It addresses some of the key issues involved in the estimation of the economic value of conserving genetic resources for agriculture. It covers the modelling of the value of Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs), empirical studies of PGRs (including field diversity and yield vulnerability), seven empirical studies of PGR breeding values, property rights in PGRs and the implications of modern biotechnology methods for PGR values. The book will be essential reading for workers in agricultural economics, plant breeding and genetics, and biodiversity and conservation.

        Market Development for Genetically Modified Foods

        by Edited by Vittorio Santaniello, Robert E Evenson, David Zilberman

        The investment climate for firms producing genetically modified (GM) agricultural products has recently experienced considerable change, with the occurrence of remarkably high rate of farmer acceptance, but considerable consumer resistance. The present system that involves firms developing biotech products, farmers producing the products, food and related agribusiness industrial firms, and consumers of food, is very volatile. This however will soon be affected by changes in reulatory, trade and food safety regimes.This book addresses these key issues and is based on papers presented at the fourth meeting of The International Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology Research (ICABR), on Economics of Agricultural Biotechnology, held at Ravello, Italy, in August 2000. Organized in four parts, this volume focuses on:Consumer reactions to GM food informationRegulatory issuesFarmer acceptance of biotech productsChanges in industrial organization in life science and food sectors

        Herzblut erwiderter Liebe

        Roman

        by Manuel Puig, Karin Schweder-Schreiner

        Manuel Puig wurde 1932 in der argentinischen Provinzstadt General Villegas geboren. Schon früh zeigte sich seine Begeisterung für das Kino und die Vorliebe für Melodramen des Hollywoodfilms der dreißiger und vierziger Jahre. Er studierte auf Drängen der Eltern zunächst Architektur in Buenos Aires, wechselte aber bald in die Fakultät für Philosophie und Literatur. 1956 reiste er mit einem Stipendium des »Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia«, der bedeutendsten italienischen Filmhochschule, nach Rom, wo er bei Vittorio De Sica und Cesare Zavattini lernte und Drehbücher zu schreiben begann. Zwischen 1961 und 1962 arbeitete er als Regieassistent bei verschiedenen Projekten in Rom und Buenos Aires mit. Nach Aufenthalten in London und Stockholm zog er 1963 vorübergehend nach New York, wo er seinen ersten Roman, La traición de Rita Hayworth (1968, dt. Von Rita Hayworth verraten, 1976), schrieb. Der Fortsetzungsroman Boquitas pintadas (1969, dt. Der schönste Tango der Welt, 1975) entwickelte sich bald zum Bestseller. Mit seinen anfänglich als Kitschliteratur verschrieenen Romanen durchbrach er die Grenzen zwischen sogenannter »hoher« und »niederer« Literatur. Weltweiten Ruhm erlangte Manuel Puig mit der Verfilmung seines Romans El beso de la mujer araña (1976, dt. Der Kuß der Spinnenfrau, 1979) durch den Regisseur Héctor Babenco, 1985. Eine Bearbeitung für die Bühne hatte Puig bereits 1981 vorgenommen. Von der argentinischen Militärregierung wurde das Buch verboten, woraufhin Puig seine Heimat endgültig verließ. Er zog nach Mexiko, lebte einige Jahre in New York und Rio de Janeiro, wo er den Roman Sangue de amor correspondido (1982, dt. Herzblut erwiderter Liebe, 2000) auf Portugiesisch schrieb, und kehrte ein Jahr vor seinem frühen Tod im Jahre 1990 nach Mexiko zurück. Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, geboren 1943 in Posen (Polen), studierte Portugiesisch und Französisch in Mainz und Lissabon. Seit 1978 arbeitet sie – nach einer Tätigkeit als Fremdsprachenkorrespondentin – als freie Übersetzerin und erhielt zahlreiche Übersetzerpreise. Nach längeren Aufenthalten in Brasilien, Schweden, Frankreich und Portugal lebt Karin von Schweder-Schreiner heute in Hamburg.

        Nutrition and Feeding Organic Cattle

        by Robert Blair

        Organic cattle farming is on the increase, with consumer demand for organic milk and meat growing yearly. Beginning with an overview of the aims and principles behind organic cattle production, this book presents extensive information about how to feed cattle so that the milk and meat produced meet organic standards, and provides a comprehensive summary of ruminant digestive processes and nutrition. Since the publication of the first edition, global consumers have increasingly become concerned with the sustainability of meat production. Here, Robert Blair considers the interrelationships of sustainable practices and profitability of organic herds, reviewing how to improve forage production and quality, and minimizing the need for supplementary feeding using off-farm ingredients. This new edition also covers: - Managing a recurrent shortage of organic feed ingredients, due to increased GM feed crop cultivation worldwide - Current findings on appropriate breeds and grazing systems for forage-based organic production - Diet-related health issues in organic herds and the effects of organic production on meat and milk quality. Required reading for animal science researchers, advisory personnel that service the organic milk and beef industries and students interested in organic milk and meat production, this book is also a useful resource for organic farming associations, veterinarians, and feed and food industry personnel.
