Auf seinen Touren trifft er Lucilla, eine junge Stadtstreicherin aus Polen, und glaubt, die Silhouette seiner früheren Frau wiederzusehen. Er versorgt sie mit deren Kleidung, überläßt ihr die leerstehende Wohnung - doch sie zerreißt sein Illusions-Gespinst, sie entzieht sich ihm, und erst in ihrer Heimat, in der vor Hitze flirrenden Landschaft der Pommerschen Seenplatte, sieht er sie wirklich: ihr Gesicht, in dem es »etwas Helleres gibt als Intelligenz«, ihren Körper, der ihn verwirrt. »Plötzlich empfand er deutlich, was das ganze Leben in ihm vorbereitet hatte, so wie ein ferner Ton, seine Schwingung, die Moleküle stimmt, bis sie Jahrhunderte später eine Form annehmen, den Hauch einer Maserung im Kork, eine grüne Spitze zwischen Steinen.« Aber auch Lucilla hatte Gründe, vor ihrem Leben zu fliehen... Und so finden wir DeLoo am Ende des Romans im winterlichen Berlin wieder, ohne Hoffnung, aber auch ohne Verzweiflung: frei.
