How can we reconfigure our picture of modern art after the postcolonial turn without simply adding regional art histories to the Eurocentric canon? Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.

This third edition of Experimental Design and Analysis for Tree Improvement provides a set of practical procedures to follow when planning, designing and analysing tree improvement trials. Using many fully worked examples, it outlines how to: design field, glasshouse and laboratory trials; efficiently collect and construct electronic data files; pre-process data, screening for data quality and outliers; analyse data from single and across-site trials; and interpret the results from statistical analyses. The authors address the many practical issues often faced in forest tree improvement trials and describe techniques that will efficiently give conclusive results. The techniques provided are applicable to the improvement of not only trees, but to crops in general. Building on the success of the second edition, this new edition has been fully revised to include the construction of p-rep and spatial designs using the commercially available software package for design generation (CycDesigN). In recent years there has been much debate in Japan over rice, which is considered the "staple food" of the Japanese people. Certain agricultural policies and traditional attitudes, the aging of farming communities and the lack of successors have become major problems, leading to the overproduction of rice and falling prices. Agricultural policy has been forced to respond to these problems. This book summarizes the changing relationship between the Japanese people and rice over the past half century, pointing out four turning points. The book then discusses in detail the "rice paddy glut" as the most recent rice problem in Japan. The book also points out that a "fifth tipping point " will come in the near future, when there will be an excess of farmland, and suggests ways to deal with this problem. Similar problems could be on the horizon in the future for developing countries that have invested heavily in increasing rice production.
Rice is a collection of fictional works by Su Tong, which includes Rice, Three Lamps and Fish of the People. Rice, a tale of desire, agony, existence and destruction, is a novel Su Tong wrote in the early 1990s. It depicts the samsara-like life of a man who migrated to the city by train to run away from famine and who eventually returns to his hometown also by train. The wandering life in a strange place is the basic generalization of his life and his death on the way home marks the climax of the whole story. Rice is the most noteworthy one among the few novels Su Tong has written so far.

Hitchcock's professed disdain for actors is belied by the extraordinary range and depth of performances featured in his films. It might even be argued that many stars gave their richest and most complex performances in his work. Hitchcock's films are also imbued with the theme of performance, as when his fugitive men and errant women assume fragile new identities and move between roles. Actors and other performers also often feature as characters. However, the exhaustive academic literature on Hitchcock has to date produced surprisingly little work about acting and performance in his films. This novel depicts the image of a controversial and dubious “coward”. The refined, gentle and frail-looking Wang Wenqi is in fact an enduring and staunch person. During the mop-up operation of the Japanese invaders in the village, in order to save the life of a rash villager, he exposes his true identity. He thus finds himself trapped between mixing with the Japanese invaders against his will and incurring the hatred of the local villagers … He shows submission and even ingratiation towards the Japanese, never daring to defy them openly, but in his inner world he is full of hatred towards the Japanese. He eventually beheads the local Japanese chief officer. Such an action of fighting against tyranny with submissiveness and such a show of power behind apparent weakness bear witness to an honest and truly kind “coward” who struggles for a living between the cruelty of the enemy and the indignation of the nation.

Francis Bacon (1551-1626) war der Propagandist der neuen Zielbestimmung der Naturforschung. Die in den modernen Industrieländern praktizierte technische Form der Naturnutzung ist infolge der jetzt offenkundig werdenden Schädigungen an der Natur zunehmend unter Kritik geraten. Mit den Befunden der »ökologischen Krise« wird nicht nur auf die Bedrohlichkeit der Technikfolgeschäden hingewiesen, sondern es wird zugleich die neuzeitliche Art der Naturforschung für die absehbare Katastrophe verantwortlich gemacht. Hans Jonas hat deshalb verlangt, daß wir das »Baconsche Ideal« aufgeben und uns dem Gedanken der Bewahrung der Natur verschreiben. Nicht länger sollten Ziele und Zwecke des Menschen die Grundlage unseres Handelns gegenüber der Natur sein; das »Prinzip Verantwortung« gebiete vielmehr, die in der westlichen Zivilisation dominant gewesene »Anthropozentrik« zu verabschieden und die Eigenrechte der Natur in unserem Handeln zu respektieren. Gegen diese pauschale Beschuldigung der Moderne ist die vorliegende Studie gerichtet. Schäfer sieht durch die ökologische Krise nicht die Aufkündigung des Baconschen Ideals geboten - wohl aber eine drastische Revision des »Baconschen Programms«, d.h. der Mittel und Methoden, mit denen das Ideal seither verfolgt wurde."
