        Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Plants

by Vanitha Jain & P. Ananda Kumar

Nitrogen fertilizers are necessary to enhance agricultural production and to sustain food security. However, their inefficient use accrues from inherent limitations of the crop plants as well as the manner in which N fertilizers are formulated, applied and managed. The main aim of the book is to assess the various aspects of the fate of fertilizer N in context of the overall N inputs to agricultural systems, with a view to enhance the efficiency of nitrogen use and reduce the negative impacts on environment. The cross cutting issues relate to improvement in nitrogen use by emerging technologies (genetic enhancement, QTL mapping), meeting N needs by understanding its interactions with other nutrients, and mitigation of nitrogen losses caused by environmental factors and management practices. Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Plants develops links between basic and applied research and practical crop production by addressing a wide range of topics relating to nitrogen use efficiency, and to plant and crop responses to applications of nitrogen via fertilizers, including nitrogen acquisition and reduction, molecular approaches, nitrate induction and signaling; and nitrogen use under abiotic stresses. Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Plants is an invaluable classroom aid for academics working in plant physiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular breeding and agronomy, and an essential professional resource for researchers working in plant and crop systems as it provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary description of problems related to the efficient use of nitrogen in agriculture.

        Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics

        Classical and Modern Methods

        by T.S.Rana, K.N.Nair & D.K.Upreti

The basic aim of this manual is to provide useful resource materials for training young students and faculties working in the area of plant systematics. The manual provides updated information on basic as well as applied aspects of plant systematics on various groups of plants like Algae, Lichens, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. 1 to 3 describe the various approaches and methods to study microbial and fungal diversity, which is basically a very useful precursor to the students and young researchers. 4 and 5 provide deals with the multi-dimensional approaches in Lichen systematics. The book progresses upwards through the plethora of information on the diversity and systematics of Algae, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms ( 6-10). 11 to 15 contain on the plant methodological details identification, approaches and methods of Flora, revision, monograph and development of herbarium. This information is very important for the students and young faculties who intend to pursue their researches in plant taxonomy. 14 and 15 particularly provide all the relevant information on the International Code of Plant nomenclature including cultivated plants. These s per se are very significant for the amateur as well as serious readers of plant taxonomy. Plant taxonomy and biosystematics is a dynamic subject, as it derives information from various other disciplines like palynology, seed morphology, pharmacognosy, molecular biology, etc. We have, therefore, broaden the scope of this book by including the s on palynology, seed morphology, molecular systematics, biostatistics, ecological and remote sensing methods for diversity analyses, and pharmacognostical tools for identification of herbal drugs ( 16-22). The knowledge and information on these applied aspects of biology in relation to taxonomy will certainly infuse the interest in readers, who are pursuing plant taxonomy as their scientific pursuits. 23 and 24 describe the various methods of characterization and evaluation of ornamental and medicinal plants. The last (25) of the book provides the information about CSIR-NBRI Botanic Garden and its various repositories, which could be of great interest to the readers from the perspectives of plant conservation.

Practical Guide to Using the CDM Regulations 2015

        Teamwork not Paperwork

        by Tony Putsman (Author)

Although the CDM Regulations first came into effect in 1995, there is still widespread misunderstanding regarding how project teams should perform in order to satisfy their legal obligations. Addressing the latest revisions to the CDM Regulations, Practical Guide to Using the CDM Regulations 2015: Teamwork not Paperwork unpicks the common misunderstandings and provides clear examples of how the regulations can be applied to real-life cases. Practical Guide to Using the CDM Regulations 2015: Teamwork not Paperwork examines the key principles of delivering quality projects, safely and within reasonable financial limits, and how to apply these principles in practice. This succinct guide summarises the key features of the legislation and explains the best practice behaviours that will enable project teams to work more effectively, and at the same time satisfy the requirement of the law. Reflecting the new CDM 2015 Regulations, this edition: • outlines Health and Safety legislation, culminating in the CDM Regulations, and demonstrates a management framework for managing risk with the intention of preventing death, injury and ill health in construction. • provides an appreciation of legal requirements and best practice guidance to satisfy legal standards • emphasises the importance of structured development of the team, establishing purpose and promoting a collaborative culture • includes case studies demonstrating the application of the CDM 2015 Regulations to real-life projects • demonstrates the fundamental management principles required to ensure quality service can meet the schedule, the budget and the legal requirements of a project.

        Climate Change and Agroforestry

        Adaptation, Mitigation and Livelihood Security

        by C.B.Pandey, Mahesh Kumar Gaur & R.K.Goyal

Natural change in climate is slow and takes millions of years; and it is known to have made our planet hospitable to live. The climate change is not limited to one country or a continent. It is occurring across the globe as evident from droughts in Texas and flooding along the Missouri River in the United States and along the Red River in Canada. Climate change drives many stressors and interacts with many non-climatic stressors which make it difficult to forecast outcomes in any general way other than existing threats to agriculture. Agroforestry increases a high level of diversity within agricultural lands which supports numerous ecological and production services that bring resilience to the impact of climate change mitigation and adaptation. Climate change risk management is difficult in annual cropping systems due to increasing uncertainty of inter-annual variability in rainfall and temperature. Mixing of woody trees with crops, forage and livestock operations provides greater resilience to the inter-annual variability through crop diversification and increased resource use efficiency. Deep rooted trees allow better access to nutrients and water during droughts and when appropriately integrated into annual cropping systems and extract from different resource pools that would otherwise be lost from systems. Agroforestry increases soil porosity, reduces runoff and increases soil cover, which improve water infiltration and reduces moisture stress in low rainfall years. During periods of excessive soil moisture, tree based systems keep soils aerated by pumping out excess water and offer an economic return. The book contains 36 chapters mainly on agroforestry practices found in India and its role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

FIDIC Quick Reference Guide: Red Book

by Brian Barr, Leo Grutters (originally created by Brian Totterdill) (Author)

The FIDIC (Fédération Internationale des Ingénieurs-Conseils) forms of contract are used extensively throughout the world to further the aims of the construction industry at large. In both the developed and the developing world they play a crucial role in ensuring that project objectives are satisfactorily achieved. In a perfect world, projects are completed on time and on budget, affording the beneficiaries the advantages of the designed project. As long as contracting is the modus operandi, such a scenario can only occur through efficient and effective use of those contracts. Quality contract administration is of paramount importance. Numerous books have been written on this subject with the aftermath of contractual conflict in mind. Such books dwell on the methods by which disputes can be resolved, with emphasis placed on the legal aspects of contract administration. The FIDIC Quick Reference Guide takes a different approach. Rather than solving a problem after the conflict has occurred, this series of books and associated electronic aids set out how to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place. The FIDIC Quick Reference Guide series: • concentrates on two issues: what to do and when to act • establishes a simple sub-clause by sub-clause format to enable easy referencing • designed to be used alongside the project’s contract form • provides a quick overview of the actions to be taken and the time in which to take such actions. FIDIC Quick Reference Guide: Red Book provides a valuable tool for practitioners who are either preparing or using the contract form, as it directs the user through this minefield of directly, or often implied, cross-referenced sub-clauses.
