View Rights PortalBeyond the Happening uncovers the heterogeneous, uniquely interdisciplinary performance-based works that emerged in the aftermath of the early Happenings. By the mid-1960s Happenings were widely declared outmoded or even 'dead', but this book reveals how many practitioners continued to work with the form during the late 1960s and 1970s, developing it into a vehicle for studying interpersonal communication that simultaneously deployed and questioned contemporary sociology and psychology. Focussing on the artists Allan Kaprow, Marta Minujín, Carolee Schneemann and Lea Lublin, it charts how they revised and retooled the premises of the Happening within a wider network of dynamic international activity. The resulting performances directly intervened in the wider discourse of communication studies, as it manifested in the politics of countercultural dropout, soft power and cultural diplomacy, alternative pedagogies, sociological art and feminist consciousness-raising.

The first edition of this book was published in 1996. It can also be called the first popular history of Ukraine, which, according to the author, can be "read without bromine" and which affirms the fundamental normality of Ukrainian history. The new edition corrects some inaccuracies and errors of previous editions, as well as adds new sections, including a section on the last two decades of independent Ukraine, up to the time of the 2013-2014 revolution, the war with Russia and the election weeks of 2019.
Having exploded on the margins of Europe, Chornobyl marked the end of the Soviet Union and tied the era of postmodernism in Western Europe with nuclear consciousness. The Post-Chornobyl Library in Tamara Hundorova’s book becomes a metaphor of a new Ukrainian literature of the 1990s, which emerges out of the Chornobyl nuclear trauma of the 26th of April, 1986. Ukrainian postmodernism turns into a writing of trauma and reflects the collisions of the post-Soviet time as well as the processes of decolonization of the national culture. A carnivalization of the apocalypse is the main paradigm of the post-Chornobyl text, which appeals to “homelessness” and the repetition of “the end of histories.” Ironic language game, polymorphism of characters, taboo breaking, and filling in the gaps of national culture testify to the fact that the Ukrainians were liberating themselves from the totalitarian past and entering the society of the spectacle. Along this way, the post-Chornobyl character turns into an ironist, meets with the Other, experiences a split of his or her self, and witnesses a shift of geo-cultural landscapes.
My Life With Lifers Lessons For A Teacher: Humanity Has No Bars "I have always been drawn to darkness," Elaine Leeder writes. "I know I always championed the underdog." As a sociology professor at Ithaca College in the 1990s, she began teaching at Elmira Correctional Facility in upstate New York. When she moved to California, that same desire to help led her to the prison education program at San Quentin. Then, inspired by her lessons, a group of Leeder's students approached her about working with a program the prisoners had established to aid in their long and difficult process of redemption and transformation. She accepted. These members of New Leaf on Life-the San Quentin "lifers"-have been sentenced to terms ranging from fifteen years to life in prison. Unlike Death Row inmates, who will either die in prison or be executed, many of the lifers are eligible for parole after having spent twenty to thirty years behind bars. But too often, they never see that opportunity because of the popular view that they are all "hardened criminals," killers incapable of rehabilitation and unfit to be free. What Leeder has learned, however, is that incarceration does not dictate character. Her students, although they are convicts, are committed to making their time in jail a life sentence in the best sense, not a death sentence. They have gone the extra mile to come to terms with their crimes, and have often managed to redeem their lives. My Life With Lifers shares the journey of a woman "on the outside" as she discovered the true nature of life in prison, and the roadblocks-so many of them unneeded-on the inmates' path to freedom. What Leeder's experiences add up to is both a fascinating human story and a reasoned and impassioned case for prison reform.
The monograph "Ukrainian nobility from the end of XIV to the middle of XVII centuries. Volyn and Central Ukraine" by doctor of history, professor Nataliya Yakovenko is dedicated to the history of elites in Ukraine as a part of Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Polish Crown. The author examines the formation of different groups and princely elites of the united "noble people" as well as its development during the two ages from the joining of its lands to the GDL and to the Cossack revolution of 1648. An origin and social structure, legal and property status, as well as personal and numerical strength of Ukrainian nobility are the main objects of the author's research. The first edition of the book, written at the end of 1980th, was published in 1993.This researh immediately became a bestseller and bibliographic rarity as it inspired a range of further fruitful scientific studies by Ukrainian and foreign historians in the same field. The new edition has been fundamentally revised and updated.
The author of the book served 10 years in prison in a concentration camp and was in exile in Brezhnev times for participating in the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Group (UHG). It was the first legal, not underground, group of the Resistance Movement, which, acting for a long time, revealed to the whole world the situation with the human rights in Ukraine under the Soviet rule. Born in Galicia after the World War 2 and brought up in a Soviet school, the author shows in his memoirs the role of the Galician family in shaping the position of resistance to the totalitarian regime. He tells vigorously, interestingly and frankly about life in Kiev under the Soviets in the era of the Helsinki movement, about the activities of the UHG and its members, about unjust arrests, and Soviet crooked justice. He recounts in detail the life of political prisoners in a concentration camp, describes the circumstances of his exile in Kazakhstan. He pays great attention to the spiritual growth of a person, shares his reflections on dissidence and the nature of totalitarianism. And conclusively, he condemns the communist system.

The first volume of memoirs of the outstanding Ukrainian scholar Yuriy Shevelyov (Sherekh) is an invaluable source for understanding Ukrainian history of the first half of the twentieth century. The publication is first illustrated and contains 248 photographs; part of them - from the Shevelyov family album - is published for the first time. The text is complemented by 1626 notes and a name index. The preface is written by the compiler of the publication, Mr. Serhiy Vakulenko.
Ukraine’s Maidan, Russia’s War: A Chronicle and Analysis of the Revolution of Dignity is a book by Mykhailo Wynnytskyj, which covers in detail and consistently the events in Ukraine in 2013-2018. This historical work combines the point of view of a scientist and a participating observer who took an active part in the protests. During the Revolution of Dignity, Mykhailo Wynnytskyj was a regular commentator in the English-language media, analyzing current events in his blog "Thoughts from Kyiv". Later he wrote this book, which was first published in 2019 in English and became the author's contribution to defending Ukraine's position in the many years of information war.

The book outlines the sociological arguments and political activities of the US pragmatist sociologist, Herbert Adolphus Miller (1875-1951). Miller was part of the milieu of Chicago sociology and involved in its studies of race and immigration. He took a distinctly more radical approach and developed a novel political sociology of domination in which he set out a critique of empires, the plight of subject minorities and the risks associated with the inevitable nationalist responses. Where others have identified with the 'internationalisation' of nationalism, Miller sought to make the nation 'international'. He was actively involved in movements for racial justice, Czechoslovakian independence, the formation of the Mid-European Union of subject peoples, as well as support for Korean and Indian independence. He was dismissed by Ohio State University for his activism in 1932.
In 2014, the Russian army, with support from local militants, had occupied parts of Ukraine’s two easternmost regions, the regions that were the beating industrial heart of the socialist utopia in the Soviet era, and where coal extraction has exhausted both the human population and the natural resources. The book is devoted to the most tragic period of the history of the Crimean Tatar people - the deportation of 1944. It describes the lives of the expelled people in foreign lands as well as tells us a story of long and self-sacrificing struggle of the Crimean Tatars for the right to return to their homeland. It is a detailed research of the history of the Crimean Tatar national movement and contains a lot of quotes from the Crimean Tatars’ self-publishing press as well as citations from the traditionally friendly to the Crimean Tatars Moscow editions of that times. An author also reinforced her research by analysis of many documents that were found in the Crimean, Kyiv and Moscow archives as well as by the interview with the most famous and respected member of the movement, leader of Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Djemilev, who was a prisoner of conscience many times during Soviet era. Mustafa Djemilev also wrote an introduction to the book. According to the author, resistance of Crimean Tatars to the criminal policy of the Moscow authorities and the refusal of Russian authorities to fulfil the just demands of the Crimean Tatar people are two different fronts of the national struggle of Crimean Tatar people. Despite the victory of the Crimean Tatars and their return to their homeland a quarter century ago, the struggle at the both fronts continues.
The book by Prof. Ihor Shevchenko, a noble intellectual, one of the most prominent specialists in the fields of Byzantine and Slavic history and culture, presents the medieval and early modern history of Ukraine in a broad cultural perspective in the context of the country’s relations with the East (Byzantium, Muscovite/Russian state, the Ottoman Empire) and the West (Poland and Austria-Hungary). The twelve essays that make up the book cover the period from the introduction of Christianity in Kievan Rus to the early 18th Century.
In her book, Natalia Yakovenko, Doctor of Sciences in History, Professor at NaUKMA (National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy), examines the "national-state" paradigm of Ukrainian history and revises inherited methodologies of the bygone age, starting from populist historiography, that still nourish (not to say ‘feed’) our academic historiography.
The creation of this book was spearheaded by two journalists who used to work in Ukraine’s Crimea. The book’s genre is a mix of reportage, activism, and oral history and presents a narrative about Russia’s invasion of Crimea and its annexation in the spring of 2014. The volume captures the everyday life and resistance of the Crimean people under the occupation as well as the work of human rights and pro-Ukrainian activists who had remained in Crimea despite the crackdown of the collaborating local authorities and Russian security forces. The editors have amassed a sizable amount of recollections and testimonies. They interviewed forced migrants who moved to Ukraine-controlled territory immediately or soon after the annexation, people who were persecuted, held captive, or incarcerated by the FSB (the Russian Security Service) as well as residents who stayed in Crimea. These testimonies have undergone a media fact-check and an assessment by human rights institutions, such as the Crimean Human Rights Group and the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, and were reworked in accordance with the standards of democratic journalism, translated into Ukrainian, and equipped with authentic illustrations. Some stories and documents were taken from the public domain and are included with the authors’ permission, while other stories were recorded specifically for this book.
