In 2014, the Russian army, with support from local militants, had occupied parts of Ukraine’s two easternmost regions, the regions that were the beating industrial heart of the socialist utopia in the Soviet era, and where coal extraction has exhausted both the human population and the natural resources. The phenomenon of the Ukrainian avant-garde was first revealed to the Western world in 1973 at the "Tatlin's dream" London exhibition where for the first time, world-class paintings by little known Ukrainian avant-garde artists Vasyl Yermylov and Oleksandr Bohomazov were exhibited. This famous show raised awareness also of other world-famous masters who, by origin, upbringing, self identification, and national traditions were associated with Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odesa. Apart from the above-mentioned artists, the book mentions “the most faithful son of Ukraine” Davyd Burliuk, as well as Kazymyr Malevych, a Pole who considered himself Ukrainian; Volodymyr Tatlin, a professor of Kyiv Art Institute and bandura player; Oleksandra Ekster, a founder of the Ukrainian school of constructivist scenography; artists of the "Culture League"; Oleksandr Arkhypenko, a phenomenal sculptor. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Reality of Illusion. Oleksander Hnylytskyj (February 23 — March 26, 2017). The exhibition was constructed not as a simple final retrospection. It had a specific conceptual core, reflected in the title – the reality and illusiveness of the world in their intermutation and convergence. It is this core that combines incredible variety into a cohesive artistic world of Oleksandr Hnylytskyj. The artistic path was depicted not in the linear form, but in the conceptual form instead – the exhibition was disintegrated like a puzzle where separate fragments, cycles, blocks and meanings joined and intertwined with unexpected logic, generating a complicated “exhibitional performance.”

Marta knows that her father became the living dead because of the war her country started against their neighbours. But whoever he is, she still wants to save him. The girl would have turned to her school teacher, who’s always been supportive of her, but he has changed a lot and is behaving suspiciously, so Marta has to seek help from other people. While captives are brought into the town, Marta watches as ordinary people, under the influence of defiant propaganda, begin to see the hostages as wild cynocephali. The girl detects an obvious lie and doesn’t want to put up with it. When she receives an offer to become an operative of the special service, Marta realises that she has been kept an eye on for a long time. Hoping to protect her family and friends, she accepts the offer. Getting involved in all those hushed down intriguing stories, Marta wants to do the right thing and truly believes she can, but what IS right? What information source can she actually trust? She decides it’s best to rely on the withche’s guts and concentrate on saving her father, at least for now.
