AN ANTHOLOGY OF TRADITIONAL MALAY LITERATURE

This anthology of traditional and classical works is a collection of poetry and fiction, legal digests, epistles and religious treatises, narrated, sung or written in the Malay language, in the Malay Archipelago. This language was and is widespread in the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, in Kalimantan, (Indonesian Borneo), including Pontianak, Ketapang, Sintang, Banjarmasin, Kutai and Samarinda. It was the lingua franca for most of Insular Southeast Asia and even in parts of Continental Southeast Asia, and to be found in Southern Thailand, in the provinces of Satun, Patani and Nakorn Sithammarat, and some islands in Southern Philippines. This time-span of traditional Malay literature covers a period from the earliest beginnings of oral works, through the inscriptions on stone and metal, and through further developments in oral storytelling, the advent of writing. In the decades of the 18th and 19th centuries a collision with western colonial powers and their cultures has resulted in a literature that reflected this traumatic confrontation and also, the so-called ‘modern’ elements. Along with this too we notice the rise of the new genres of the report, the travelogue, the autobiography and biography, which interestingly are prominent antecedents of modern literature.

Ihre Namen sind hierzulande noch kaum bekannt, da die wenigsten ihrer Schriften ins Deutsche übersetzt worden sind. Dennoch findet ihr Beitrag zur Versöhnung des Islams mit der Moderne auch in Deutschland hohe Anerkennung: So war zum Beispiel der 2010 verstorbene gebürtige Algerier Mohammed Arkoun, Professor an der Sorbonne in Paris, Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, desgleichen der ebenfalls 2010 verstorbene Ägypter Nasr Hamid Abu Said. Andere Vertreter, die Benzine in seinem Buch darstellt, sind Fazlur Rahman, Farid Esack (Südafrika), Abdul Karim Sorush (Iran) und Abdelmajid Charfi (Tunesien). Neben dem leidenschaftlichen Engagement für die Sache, der sich diese neuen Denker verschrieben haben und so zu Hoffnungsträgern für viele Muslime geworden sind, beeindruckt die persönliche Opferbereitschaft, die manchem von ihnen abverlangt wurde. Abu Saids Ehe etwa wurde zwangsgeschieden, er erhielt Morddrohungen und mußte ins niederländische Exil flüchten.

Die beiden Bände »Glaubt bloß nicht, daß ich traurig bin« (1977) und »Schattenstadt« (1978) wurden revidiert und zusammengefaßt. Hinzugekommen ist »Die Stunde eines einzigen Tages«. Im Anhang ein Vorwort, das Rudi Dutschke 1977 für Zschorschs erstes Buch schrieb.

Das Buch richtet sich an Kinder – und an neugierig gebliebene Erwachsene, die insgeheim philosophieren. Denn Philosophieren ist eigentlich nichts anderes als das Weiterdenken von Kinderfragen im Erwachsenenalter. Wenn es die Titelfrage hörte, würde das Sams bestimmt ausrufen: »So eine dumme Frage, so eine strohdumme Frage! Wer sollte ich denn sonst sein, wenn nicht ich?« Auf den ersten Blick mag das einleuchten, auf den zweiten ist das gar nicht so klar, denn wäre ich nicht geboren worden, gäbe es den ›Ich‹- Sager gar nicht. Es gibt auch Menschen, denen infolge einer Geisteskrankheit ihr Ich so fremd ist, daß sie glauben, eine unbekannte Macht handle an ihrer Stelle. Aber selbst in diesem schlimmsten Fall zeigt das Fürwort ›ich‹ todsicher auf mich. Auch mit einer Geistesstörung bin ich es, dem dieses schreckliche Leiden zustößt. Warum das Bewußtsein von uns selbst diese hohe Zuverlässigkeit hat, werden wir nie herausbekommen. Wir können aber besser verstehen lernen, wie sie sich äußert. Dazu lädt Manfred Franks Kindervorlesung, versehen mit vielen amüsanten Illustrationen und Auszügen aus Kinderbuchklassikern, ein.

Kaum ein bundesdeutscher Intellektueller hat sich so intensiv mit der Bewußtseinsindustrie und dem Fernsehen auseinandergesetzt wie Hans Magnus Enzensberger. Das begann schon 1956 mit dem Aufsatz »Literatur und Linse und Beweis dessen, daß ihre glückhafte Kopulation derzeit unmöglich«. Ähnlich wie Brecht unterschied er zwischen dem, was die Medien in einer gegebenen Gesellschaftsordnung können und dem, was sie prinzipiell könnten, auch Enzensberger war uns ist sensibel für die spezifischen Potentiale der Apparate. In den siebziger Jahren drehte er zum Beispiel – parallel zum Erscheinen seines Romans Der kurze Sommer der Anarchie – die Dokumentation Durruti – Biographie einer Legende. Diese DVD-Box versammelt erstmals die wichtigsten filmischen Zeugnisse von, mit und über Enzensberger. Neben dem Durruti-Film sind Dagmar Knöpfels preisgekrönte Adaption Requiem für eine romantische Frau sowie Ralf Zöllers Porträt Ich bin keiner von uns zu sehen.

Testamentarisch hat Uwe Johnson die Peter Suhrkamp-Stiftung und seinen Verleger Siegfried Unseld zum Nachlaßverwalter eingesetzt. Siegfried Unseld beschreibt, wie es dazu kam, beschreibt aus seiner Sicht noch einmal die Begleitumstände, die das große Werk »Jahrestage« zu vollenden ermöglichten. »Für wenn ich tot bin«: es war Uwe Johnsons Wunsch, daß sein Nachlaß gesammelt und nach Frankfurt gebracht wurde. Siegfried Unseld konnte in Verbindung mit der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität ein Uwe Johnson-Archiv einrichten, das dem Gedenken des großen Schriftstellers dient. Eberhard Fahlke, Leiter des Uwe Johnson-Archivs und ausgewiesener Johnson-Forscher, beschreibt in seinem Beitrag die Einrichtung und Anlage des Archivs, welches in seiner Art einzigartig ist.

Adopting the story-within-a-story structure of Arabian Nights, author Osama Alaysa weaves together a collection of stories portraying centuries of oppression endured by the Palestinian people. This remarkable novel eloquently brings together fictional characters alongside real-life historical figures in a complex portrayal of Bethlehem and the Dheisheh Refugee Camp in the West Bank. The common thread connecting each tale is madness, in all its manifestations. Psychological madness, in the sense of clinical mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, finds expression alongside acts of social and political madness. Together, these accounts of individuals and communities provide a gateway into the histories of the city of Bethlehem and Palestine. They paint a picture of the centuries of political oppression that the Palestinian people have endured, from the days of the Ottoman Empire to the years following the Oslo Accords, and all the way to 2012 (when the novel was written). The novel is divided into three sections, each containing multiple narratives. The first section, “The Book of a Genesis,” describes the physical spaces and origins of Bethlehem and Dheisheh Refugee Camp. These stories span the 19th and 20th centuries, transitioning smoothly from one tale to another to offer an intricate interpretation of the identity of these places. The second section, “The Book of the People Without a Book”, follows parallel narratives of the lives of the patients in a psychiatric hospital in Bethlehem, the mad men and women roaming the streets of the city, and those imprisoned by the Israeli authorities. All suffer abuse, but they also reaffirm their humanity through the relationships, romantic and otherwise, that they form. The third and final section, “An Ephemeral Book,” follows individuals—Palestinian and non-Palestinian—who are afflicted by madness following the Oslo Accords in 1993. These stories give voice to the perspectives of the long-marginalized Palestinian population, narrating the loss of land and the accompanying loss of sanity in the decades of despair and violence that followed the Nakba, the 1948 eviction of some 700,000 Palestinians from their homes. The novel’s mad characters—politicians, presidents, doctors, intellectuals, ordinary people and, yes, Dheisheh and Bethlehem themselves—burst out of their narrative threads, flowing from one story into the next. Alaysa’s crisp, lucid prose and deft storytelling chart a clear path through the chaos with dark humor and wit. The result is an important contribution to fiction on the Palestinian crisis that approaches the Palestinians, madness, and Palestinian spaces with compassion and depth.
