Ach ja – von den Schmerzen und Freuden, die die Zeit bewegen, der Musik zu erzählen, dies, fühl ich, ist mir vor vielen Andern zuerteilt worden.« Robert Schumanns Lieder und Klavierstücke, seine Orchesterwerke und Kammermusik zählen zu den bedeutendsten Werken der musikalischen Romantik.
