Der erste Teil des Bandes, der Schröters Arbeiten über Elias und die Zivilisationstheorie enthält, befaßt sich mit Wandlungen der Regulation des Sexualverhaltens vom 13. bis 16. Jahrhundert. Im Zentrum steht der Zusammenhang von Staatsbildung und Triebkontrolle. Gegenüber der voreingenommenen Kritik von Hans Peter Duerr verteidigt Schröter das Modell einer Abfolge verschiedener Muster der Verhaltensregulierung im Sinne eines Zivilisationsprozesses. Drei Kurzartikel über Ehe, Vaterliebe und Abtreibungsverbot nutzen dieselbe Entwicklungsperspektive für das Verständnis heutiger Vorgänge. Im zweiten Teil verarbeitet Schröter die persönlichen Beobachtungen, die er in vierzehn Jahren der Zusammenarbeit mit Elias als dessen deutscher Übersetzer und Herausgeber gemacht hat.

Der Prozeß der Informalisierung von Ehen legt die Frage nahe, wie und warum Ehen und Eheschließungen überhaupt einmal in den Bereich staatlicher und/oder kirchlicher Normierung gerieten. Dieser Frage vor allem geht Michael Schröter in seiner Untersuchung für den deutschsprachigen Raum nach. Das Aufkommen kirchlich-staatlicher Formen der Eheschließung, so Schröters These, läßt sich nicht wirklich verstehen, wenn man sie nicht auf dem Hintergrund von Staatsbildungsprozessen, das heißt von konflikthaften Veränderungen in der Organisation menschlichen Zusammenlebens, sieht. Durch diese Perspektive hebt sich Schröters Untersuchung explizit von rechts- und vor allem kirchenrechtsgeschichtlichen Traditionen ab. Schröter arbeitet vor allem zwei Entwicklungslinien heraus, die durch die Begriffe »Institutionalisierung« und »Individualisierung« gekennzeichnet werden.

Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes

Nach seinen sprachphilosophischen Arbeiten ('Sprechakte', stw 458; 'Ausdruck und Bedeutung', stw 349) hat John R. Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

The Industrial Revolution produced injury, illness and disablement on a large scale and nowhere was this more visible than in coalmining. Disability in the Industrial Revolution sheds new light on the human cost of industrialisation by examining the lives and experiences of those disabled in an industry that was vital to Britain's economic growth. Although it is commonly assumed that industrialisation led to increasing marginalisation of people with impairments from the workforce, disabled mineworkers were expected to return to work wherever possible, and new medical services developed to assist in this endeavour. This book explores the working lives of disabled miners and analyses the medical, welfare and community responses to disablement in the coalfields. It shows how disability affected industrial relations and shaped the class identity of mineworkers. The book will appeal to students and academics interested in disability, occupational health and social history.

Die Ehe war seit langem und ist bis in unsere Tage hinein die einzige als sozial legitim anerkannte Form der Geschlechterbeziehung. Diese Monopolstellung ist in den entwickelteren Ländern erst in unseren Tagen erschüttert und zum Teil durchbrochen worden. Gerade darum ist es heute von besonderem Interesse, sich zu vergegenwärtigen, warum es in früheren Zeiten als unabweislich erschien, daß die Beziehung von Mann und Frau einer öffentlichen Legitimierung bedürfe, und vor allem auch, welche Instanzen den Anspruch erhoben, eine Geschlechterbeziehung als Ehe zu legitimieren, und Macht genug hatten, die Anerkennung dieses Anspruches durchzusetzen. Das sind die Fragen, die im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches stehen. Die Perspektive von Schröters Untersuchung unterscheidet sich explizit von rechts- und vor allem kirchenrechtsgeschichtlichen Traditionen, zu deren Domäne das Thema, zumindest in Deutschland, noch weithin gehört, die sich aber, wie es scheint, nicht genügend von den Problemdefinitionen und Machtinteressen der Instanzen, mit denen sie sich beschäftigen - des Staates und der Kirche -, zu distanzieren vermögen. Eine Fülle intensiver Fallstudien machen Michael Schröters Darstellung ebenso plausibel wie lebendig. Als Quellen nutzt er neben Gesetzen und theologischen Traktaten vor allem Berichte über tatsächliche Eheschließungen etwa in mittelalterlichen Kleinepen oder Gerichtsakten.
