        Narbut. Studies. Memoirs. Letters [A Supplemented Reproduction of the "Narbut Anthology", destroyed in 1933]

        by Bohdan Zavitii (compiler)

        This story behind this biographical memoir of a great artist begins before Narbut’s death. The best-known experts were invited to participate and contribute articles, which they spent many years preparing. But the Soviet censors “trimmed” the texts to their liking. When it was finally published in 1933, nearly all the authors had been repressed or executed. The anthology went under the knife at the printing press. It was a shame, too, because the paper was beautiful, specially allotted by the state printing press, as was the print. Only two incomplete copies remain, both in private collections. Serhii Bilokin first proposed the idea of the Narbut Anthology to Rodovid Press ten years ago, and now it is finally came to fruition with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. This is thanks to Bohdan Zavitii, Anastasia Bilousova, and entire project team including designers Sasha Bychenko, Oleksii Salnykov, and Alina Bielova. The Institute of Art History, Folklore, and Ethnology, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Kharkiv Art Museum, and others assisted with the illustrations and texts. Heorhii Narbut was a decisive figure in twentieth-century Ukrainian art, yet the Communist taboos of the Soviet period ensured he remained unknown to a broader audience. This unique project fleshes out a significant aspect of art history and puts certain things back where they belong. Pickled pumpkins

        by Sasa Stanisic

        The collection of short stories "Pickled pumpkins" by Sasha Stanisic is an extremely compact, mature and skillful literary achievement in Macedonian literature. An achievement that, fortunately, will succeed in placing one of its neighborhoods, one of its suburbs, on the literary map of Skopje, which so far has not aroused special interest among any Macedonian writer. But that is only one of the other arguments for the value of this book.

        Kotyhoroshka. The Tangled Tales

        by Valentyna Vzdulska, Oksana Luschevska

        Modern authors often return to fairy tales to rethink them and create new texts that are the same tales, but in a new interpretation. Kotygoroshko comprises eight intricate fairy tales by Ukrainian female authors of children's books. Anastasia Lavrenishyna tells an alternative story of Kolobok, Halyna Tkachuk introduces readers to Olenka the Serpent, and Oksana Lushchevska tells the story of Marie, a wise girl with a high IQ. In her tale, Alina Stefan travels to the planet 581g to meet with Kira the Lame Duck, and Mia Marchenko takes her readers to Kiev Podil, where Mykyta the Tanner and Princess Anna save the city. Valentina Vzdulska will tell you the new story of Sirko and the Wolf, and Sasha Kochubey will introduce to you the new character of Kotygoroshko. Finally, there is Anya Khromova's parable about the heart in an iron chest.

        Women reading Shakespeare 1660–1900

        An anthology of criticism

        by Ann Thompson, Sasha Roberts

        Women reading Shakespeare, 1660-1900 comprehensively rediscovers a lost tradition of women's writing on Shakespeare. Since Margaret Cavendish published the first critical essay on Shakespeare in 1664, women have written as scholars, critics, editors, performers and popularisers of Shakespeare. Many found in Shakespeare criticism the opportunity to raise a wide variety of issues, ranging from the use of women in society, family life, social relations and ethnic difference. In their different ways, women appropriated Shakespeare to their own ends - not always in step with their male contemporaries. Virtually none of this work is available today; it is unread and unknown. This fascinating anthology draws upon extensive new research to collect for the first time in one volume the Shakespeare criticism of some fifty British and American women writing before 1900. It includes the work of both familiar and unknown names and represents the diversity of literary genres used by women: the scholarly article, the periodical essay, book-length studies, personal memoirs, books for children, school editions. The volume also includes previously unknown Shakespeare illustrations by women, and a general introduction to the development of women's criticism of Shakespeare before 1900. ;

        Werke und Nachlaß. Kritische Gesamtausgabe

        Band 8: Einbahnstraße

        by Walter Benjamin, Detlev Schöttker, Steffen Haug

        »Die Konstruktion des Lebens liegt im Augenblick weit mehr in der Gewalt von Fakten als von Überzeugungen. Und zwar von solchen Fakten, wie sie zur Grundlage von Überzeugungen fast nie noch und nirgends geworden sind. Unter diesen Umständen kann wahre literarische Aktivität nicht beanspruchen, in literarischem Rahmen sich abzuspielen – vielmehr ist das der übliche Ausdruck ihrer Unfruchtbarkeit.« Mit diesen programmatischen Worten beginnt die Einbahnstraße, eines der ungewöhnlichsten Bücher Walter Benjamins. 1928 nicht als Buch, sondern als Broschüre veröffentlicht, gestaltet in konstruktivistischer Typographie, versehen mit dem berühmten Umschlag von Sasha Stone, dazu geschrieben in der »prompten Sprache« von Flugblättern, Annoncen und Plakaten, die allein »sich dem Augenblick wirkend gewachsen« zeigt, nimmt diese Sammlung von Aphorismen eine auf den ersten Blick singuläre Stellung in Benjamins Werk und der Literaturgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Die Einbahnstraße war stilbildend und kann als Vorbild etwa für Blochs Spuren oder Adornos Minima Moralia gesehen werden. Auf den zweiten Blick und in der Rückschau offenbart sich eine weitere Besonderheit der Einbahnstraße: Sie ist eine entscheidende Gelenkstelle in Benjamins Gesamtwerk, in der Überlegungen des Frühwerks transformiert werden, um sie dann in späteren Arbeiten weiterzuführen. Dies veranschaulicht insbesondere die 43 Texte umfassende »Nachtragsliste zur Einbahnstraße«, die Benjamin Anfang bis Mitte der dreißiger Jahre zusammenstellte. Sie wird, neben dem Erstdruck und allen handschriftlichen Vorstufen sowie zeitgenössischen Rezensionen, in der neuen Edition erstmals als Einheit zu lesen sein. Der Kommentar und das Nachwort des Herausgebers machen zudem die Verbindung der einzelnen Texte mit dem Gesamtwerk Benjamins sichtbar und zeigen, inwiefern die Einbahnstraße die Tradition der europäischen Aphoristik aufgenommen und zugleich erneuert hat.
