      'The better class' of Indians

Social rank, Imperial identity, and South Asians in Britain 1858–1914

      by A. Wainwright

This is the first book-length study to focus primarily on the role of class in the encounter between South Asians and British institutions in the United Kingdom at the height of British imperialism. In a departure from previous scholarship on the South Asian presence in Britain, 'The better class' of Indians emphasizes the importance of class as the register through which British polite society interpreted other social distinctions such as race, gender, and religion. Drawing mainly on unpublished material from the India Office Records, the National Archives, and private collections of charitable organizations, this book examines not only the attitudes of British officials towards South Asians in their midst, but also the actual application of these attitudes in decisions pertaining to them. This fascinating book will be of particular interest to scholars and general readers of imperialism, immigration as well as British and Indian social history.

Analytical Techniques for Natural Product Research

      by Satyanshu Kumar

Plants are important source of lead molecules for drug discovery. These lead molecules serve as starting materials for laboratory synthesis of drug as well a model for production of biologically active compounds. Phytochemical processing of raw plant materials is essentially required to optimize the concentration of known constituents and also to maintain their activities. Extraction techniques and analytical techniques have played critical roles in phytochemical processing of raw materials. Extraction technologies from conventional extraction to green extraction as well as analytical techniques from single technique to hyphenated/coupled techniques most frequently used in phytochemistry laboratories are covered in the book.

Goats are the predominant domestic livestock, and certainly the predominant small ruminant, in most of Asia, Africa and the warmer parts of Europe. Important for meat, milk, fibre and leather production, their widescale production and husbandry allows many opportunities for the spread of disease between livestock and their keepers. Taking a One Health approach to the issue, this book provides clear, accurate and comprehensive coverage of the zoonotic diseases of goats. Including information on aetiology, the epidemiology and transmission cycle, clinical symptoms, diagnosis, and prevention and control strategies, the book: - Helps readers quickly locate information about the disease's severity, mode of spread, treatment, and safety precautions; - Discusses the importance of educating animal owners about the public health implications of zoonotic diseases; - Reviews bacterial, viral, parasitic, rickettsial, and fungal diseases. An invaluable resource for veterinary practitioners and public health experts around the world, this book also provides a useful reference for researchers and students of animal disease and human health.

Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Crucifers, Volume 1

      Biology and Ecology

by Govind Singh Saharan, Naresh Kumar Mehta, Prabhu Dayal Meena

The plant pathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes white stem rot of crucifers and is considered one of the most destructive and cosmopolitan of plant pathogens. It infects over 900 species of plants worldwide including important field crops, cash crops, vegetable crops, fruit crops, ornamental plants, trees, shrubs and numerous weeds. Sclerotinia is widely distributed throughout temperate regions but also occurs in more arid areas. A lack of adequate host genetic resistance, the wide host range of the pathogen, and the difficulty in managing the disease all contribute to Sclerotinia's extensive crop damage within both broad acre and horticultural crops. Recent advances in genomics and sequences available on Brassica species and S. sclerotiorum have provided unique information on the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions. This has revealed pathogen biology, pathogenesis, effector genes and molecular mechanisms of host resistance in Brassica crops. This first volume, Biology and Ecology, covers aspects of: . Historical developments. . Geographical distribution and host range. . The pathogen - Sclerotinia. . Reproduction, reproductive structures, and ultra-structures. . The disease, symptomatology, assessment, and economic importance. . Infection pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms. . Biochemistry and physiology of host-pathogen interactions. . Future research priorities of Sclerotinia on biology and ecology.

      Gastronomic Tourism

Discovering the World through Culinary Journeys

by Anukrati Sharma, Jeetesh Kumar, Samik Ray, Abdelkader Ababneh, Prasanth Udayakumar

Gastronomy is a fundamental aspect of culture and the food and cuisine of any region can provide rich insights into the local lifestyle and traditions. Gastronomic tourism therefore involves visiting food producers, restaurants, food festivals or other establishments where visitors can dine and experience the typical products of a region. It is an enjoyable way for tourists to discover the cultural heritage of the places they visit and culinary pleasure is becoming an increasingly decisive factor when choosing a travel destination. In certain regions, gastronomy has been recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (by UNESCO) and the promotion of local traditional cuisine can be a way to rediscover and preserve local or regional values through culinary riches. Gastronomic tourism is also a factor of economic improvement for different destinations, particularly in developing countries. The value of this book includes: Providing a comprehensive and well-rounded exploration of gastronomic tourism, with a broad coverage of topics addressing key aspects such as culture, economics and sustainability. Contributions by scholars from many different countries using an interdisciplinary approach that includes insights and practical examples to engage a more diverse audience. Offering a key resource for those involved in tourism who want to learn how the gastronomic potential of different cultural contexts and geographical locations can be understood. It is part of a CABI series of books on festival and event tourism and hospitality edited by an experienced academic author on tourism. This book emphasises the importance of many related factors in gastronomic tourism, which often focuses exclusively on food and cooking rather than the whole experience. The book therefore also focuses on culture, commitment, passion, learning, emotions and experiences associated with gastronomy and considers how gastronomic tourism can contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
