Climate Change and Sustainable Agro-ecology in Global Drylands
by Adel El-Beltagy, Rattan Lal, Kauser Abdulla Malik
Drylands, a home for nearly 2.5 billion people, are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic climate change, and dryland area may expand to 50% of the Earth's surface by 2100. Climate change may aggravate the prevalence of undernutrition and malnutrition because of adverse effects on quantity and quality of food production in these regions. This book takes a holistic approach to sustainable management of drylands to make agriculture drought-resilient. Eminent scientists from around the world share their knowledge and experiences for adaptation and mitigation of the anthropogenic climate change through innovation in sustainable management of water, soil, crops, livestock, and fisheries. They anticipate that climate change will have major impacts on agro- ecosystems which requires continuous dynamic assessments, globally, regionally, and at the local level where the major action of adaptation would have to occur. The assessment will require international cooperation and national capacity-building. This book emphasizes approaches such as smart and precision agriculture, conservation agriculture, and new innovation and technology as tools for adaptation and mitigation. Several chapters are devoted to the human dimensions and policy considerations with emphasis on enhancing coping and adaptive capacity. This book addresses the picture after COP27, including loss and damage, governance and finance. This book: Examines sustainable management for drylands as a solution to environmental and food security issues. Uses a holistic approach to evaluate sustainable management of drylands. Explains how researchers are translating science into action for greening global drylands. This work will be valuable to students and researchers in agroecology, climate change science and dryland agriculture.

The fight against global hunger demands a fresh perspective. Lesser-known legumes, often called 'potential pulses', can play a pivotal role. These underutilized powerhouses, including adzuki bean, bambara groundnut, faba bean, cowpea, grass pea and horse gram, among others, are currently untapped resources. Their potential goes beyond their ability to thrive in harsh environments (caused by high temperature, drought, etc.) and fix nitrogen. With increased understanding of these legumes and their genetic and genomic potential, we can unlock a new world of sustainable and nutritious food sources. This book explores: The rich genetic diversity of potential pulses and its role in resilience. How advanced genomics can identify traits for improved yields, pest resistance, and climate adaptation. Strategies for conserving and utilizing these valuable genetic resources. Breeding programmes harnessing genetic potential to create next-generation pulse varieties. Focusing on the untapped genetic and genomic potential of these legumes, this book empowers researchers, breeders, and policymakers to unlock a new era of food and nutritional security. By leveraging the power of their genes, we can transform underutilized pulses into the nutritional heroes of tomorrow.

Invisible Empire
The Natural History of Viruses
by Pranay Lal
Viruses are the world’s most abundant life form, and now, when humanity is in the midst of a close encounter with their immense power, perhaps the most feared. But do we understand viruses? Possibly the most enigmatic of living things, they are sometimes not considered a life form at all. Everything about them is extreme, including the reactions they evoke. However, for every truism about viruses, the opposite is also often true. So complex and diverse is the world of viruses that it merits being labelled an empire unto itself. And whether we see them as alive or dead, as life-threatening or life-affirming, there is an ineluctable beauty, even a certain elegance, in the way viruses go about their lives – or so Pranay Lal tells us in Invisible Empire: The Natural History of Viruses. This is a book that defies categorisation. It brings together science, history and great storytelling to paint a fascinating picture of viruses as a major actor, not just in human civilisation but also in the human body. With rare photographs, paintings, illustrations and anecdotes, it is a magnificent and an extremely relevant book for our times, when we are attempting to understand viruses and examining their role in the lives of humans.

Red Ant Black Ant
by Girindrasekhar Basu; translated by Sukanta Chaudhuri
Lal-kalo, a book for children written nearly a hundred years ago in 1930, is one of themost curious examples of Bengali juvenile literature. Its author, Girindrasekhar Basu,is regarded as the father of Indian psychoanalysis. In 1911, he began a decade-longcorrespondence with Sigmund Freud on cultural variations in psychoanalytic conceptsand founded the Indian Psychoanalytic Society in Calcutta in 1922. Lal-kalo, a delightful story about the battle between the red ants and the black ants, with an all-singing and dancing cast of owls, geckos, frogs, snakes and the like, has remained a perennial children’s favourite ever since.

Life and Art of Kamala Das New Perspectives
by Rajan Lal
There is no denying the fact that no single authority howsoever exploratory he/she may be can explore all the possible aspects, dimensions and perspectives in a work of art. Research always eludes leaving some unknown and unexplored possible domains and avenues in that discipline of art. It is also imperative to say that much work has been done on Kamala Das and her poetry and a couple of books written on her poetry are also available. Books like Kamala Das and Her Poetry by A. N. Dwivedi, Kamala Das: A Critical Spectrum edited by Rajeshwar Mittapalli and Pier Paolo Piciucco, Kamala Das by Devindra Kohli, Expressive Form in the Poetry of Kamala Das by Anisur Rahman, and Endless Female Hungers by Vrinda Nabar are written on Kamala Das’s poetry. Each of the authors has tried his/her level best to explore something new and unique in his/her surveyed work. But something still evades to be explored. Without minimizing the importance of these works and employing their traverses and explorations, the book in hand is unique in the sense that it explores the new perspectives and new dimensions in the poetry of Kamala Das. She has stormed the stereotypical and hackneyed set-up of the Indian mind and yet, has won both, the regard and the interest of the readers who appreciate her genuine spirit. Being an incorrigible optimist and outrageous rebel, she dares to shake and break the mirrors and barriers of orthodox social patterns. No reader dislikes her, including those who attack her openness and extravagance of courage and those who criticize her for appearing what she is. Critically speaking, what was rejected and called indecent and insane under a fake façade of bourgeois morality and respectability by the previous generation comprising Aurobindo, Toru Dutt, Vivekananda, R. N. Tagore and Sarojini Naidu was embraced and hugged by Mrs. Das blurring all traditional and socio-cultural taboos and barriers imposed by hegemonic patriarchy. Along with its new perspectives, this book also examines some select prose works of Kamala Das including My Story, A Doll for the Child Prostitute and Alphabet of Lust, since scanty of attention towards her prose works has been given. Thus, this book is designed for the literary enthusiasts including teachers and the taught, researchers and common readers.

Intercropping System
Theory and Practices
by Sagar Maitra
Intercropping system is an age-old cropping system where two or more crops coexist for a significant time of their growth period. In the present context of negative impacts on crop productivity and soil fertility, a system approach in cropping has become more relevant. The book Intercropping System is divided into nine chapters that deal with the theory and practices of the intercropping system including recent research evidence. The first two chapters describe the overview of the intercropping system and complexity as well as the competitive relationship among component crops. The third chapter narrates the management options in the intercropping systems, while the fourth chapter highlights the multifaceted benefits of an intercropping system. Chapter 5 tells the suitability for the adoption of the intercropping system in organic agriculture. The sixth chapter describes how an intercropping system can ensure agricultural sustainability and some of the sustainable development Goals (SDGs). Chapter 7 illustrates the practice of alley cropping, a form of agroforestry, in resource-poor conditions. Legumes are considered an automatic choice in the intercropping system and hence, in the eighth chapter, the benefits of the inclusion of legumes as components have been described. Finally, in the ninth chapter, the performance of important crops in the intercropping system has been highlighted.
