        100 Alien Invaders

Animals and Plants that are Changing our World_x000D_ Changing our World

        by Gill Williams

100 Alien Invaders exposes one of the greatest threats to the planet after climate change and overpopulation. Animals and plants are perfectly harmless in their native areas, but become a menace when they colonise new territories – often out-competing native species and, in some instances, drastically affecting the ecology. What's more, it is humankind that is largely responsible. Some species, such as killer bees and cane toads, are obvious terrors. Others, such as the water hyacinth, pose a more insidious threat. Read this book and you'll never look at house sparrows or hedgehogs in the same way again. 100 Alien Invaders is a warts-and-all exposé of 100 of the most destructive alien species on the planet._x000D_

        Predatory Bureaucracy

The Extermination of Wolves and the Transformation of the West

        by Michael Robinson

Tracking wolves from the days of the conquistadors to the present, author Michael Robinson shows that their story merges with that of the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey. This federal agency was chartered to research insects and birds but -- because of various pressures -- morphed into a political powerhouse dedicated to killing wolves and other wildlife. Robinson follows wolves' successful adaptation to the arrival of explorers, mountain men, and bounty hunters, through their disastrous century-long entanglement with the federal government. He shares the parallel story of the Biological Survey's rise, detailing the personal, social, geographic, and political forces that allowed it to thrive despite opposition from hunters, animal lovers, scientists, environmentalists, and presidents. Federal predator control nearly eliminated wolves throughout the United States and Mexico and radically changed American lands and wildlife populations. The extermination of predators led to problems associated with prey overpopulation, but, as Robinson reveals, extermination and control programs still continue.

        Mortals

How the fear of death shaped human history

        by Ross and Rachel Menzies

Life can feel so dazzling, so animated, so painfully vibrant that death seems impossible. And yet, from our first decade of life, humans develop a complex unconscious terror of death that influences and guides us in our darkest moments, to our brightest endeavours.   In this ground-breaking book, father-daughter academic duo Ross and Rachel Menzies show how the human fear of death has been the secret driver of most of the endeavours of our species over thousands of years and – ultimately – will be our downfall.   Drawing on both the arts and the sciences, the book reveals how humanity’s desperate attempts to deny our mortality have led to rampant consumerism, climate change, extreme overpopulation and a growing vulnerability to viral pandemics that could obliterate us within years.   Pitched for readers of Sapiens and Guns, Germs and Steel – Mortals will appeal to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of their own behaviour, the history of our species, and the true nature of man.

        Yellow Peril

        by WANG Lixiong

Raging floods and a food crisis caused by overpopulation lead China to sign a controversial international economic cooperation agreement. The signing triggers political infighting and the eventual assassination of the Party secretary. The prosperous coastal regions take the opportunity to declare independence, leading to a civil war. Taiwan supports the southern rebel government in a bid for self-preservation, while Beijing orders a nuclear strike on Taipei. Taiwan’s forces take China’s nuclear bases, but the bomb that was intended for use in a revenge strike falls into foreign hands. Fearing random nuclear attacks from China, the UN led by the US and Russia initiate a series of surgical nuclear strikes that annihilate China’s nuclear capabilities. Yet this leads to a total collapse of China’s troubled society. A farsighted crisis management expert trains civilians in secret, helping people escape from the wasteland that was China. Hungry Chinese migrate through Siberia, Europe, and the Americas, creating a wave of refugees that proves impossible to stop. While seeking asylum and assistance, they also work to develop faster-growing food as they attempt to survive in the post-disaster world. China's dictators leverage distrust across the world into a large-scale international nuclear war. Half of the earth is covered in a thick layer of nuclear fallout, and a nuclear winter begins. With no crops growing, the world descends into famine and fear. What kind of future is in store for our self-destructive species?

        Appointed To Die

        by Kate Charles

Death at the Deanery - sudden and unnatural death. Someone should have seen it coming. For even before Stuart Latimer arrives as the new Dean of Malbury, shock waves are reverberating through the tightly-knit and insular Cathedral Close, with sweeping changes afoot. And the reality is even worse than the expectation. The Dean's naked ambition and ruthless behaviour alienate everyone in the Chapter: the gentle John Kingsley, vague Rupert Greenwood, pompous Philip Thetford and, especially, the strongly traditionalist Arthur Brydges-french. Financial jiggery-pokery, clandestine meetings, malicious gossip, and several people who witness more than they ought to, make for a potent mix. But who could foresee that the mistrust within the Cathedral Close would spill over into violence and death? Canon Kingsley's daughter Lucy draws in her lover David Middleton-Brown, against his better judgement, and together they probe the surprising secrets of a self-contained world where nothing is as it seems.

Reproductive Politics and the Makings of Modern India

        by Mytheli Sreenivas

In modern India, reforming individual reproduction, through changing marriage practices or the introduction of birth control, became a means to shape the life of the population as a whole. Mytheli Sreenivas traces moments when social actors questioned the wide-ranging, complex, and sometimes contradictory politics of reproduction, asking how practices associated with biological reproduction, and the social meanings attached to these practices, became the target of public debate and contestation. She reveals the intimate imbrication of population concerns with reproductive politics and the economy, and suggests that the ideologies and institutions that encouraged the government to intervene in the reproductive lives of its subjects were not mid-twentieth-century inventions, but arose from concerns that first took shape in colonial India. Exploring the wide implications of these policies and programs, Sreenivas challenges some of the fundamental assumptions that underpin reproductive politics today, in India and transnationally.

        Much Ado About Something

        A vision of Christian maturity

        by Larry Culliford

Who, from a scientific perspective, could possibly accept the idea of a virgin birth, or any of Christ’s miracles, much less his death and resurrection? Only a child, or a Christian possessed of a considerable degree of discernment. This enthralling book reveals how we may develop from childhood innocence to spiritual maturity, via a series of psychological stages, through constant (but often unconscious) communication with the Holy Spirit. Growth will most often occur through adversity and the emotional healing that accompanies acceptance of God’s Will. Such experiences encourage the letting go of juvenile attachments and aversions, so we are free to live with increasing spontaneity ‘in the moment’ – wiser, and more compassionately attuned to the sufferings of others.

You'll have to ask God about that... I intend to write these character's stories, one year at a time, for as long as I'm able to write.
