        Patty Pan Compote

        by Olha Kari

"Patty Pan Compote" is a series of reportage sketches and essays describing how a whole generation of Ukrainians lived amidst the chaos of declining Soviet Union. This book is about what it was like to live in the 90's, when "pineapple" compote was cooked from the patty pat and eggplant became the substitute for mushrooms, when everyone was gripped by a total knitting obsession due to the lack of clothes. People grew accustomed to stockpiling absolutely everything, and the first sanitary pads have just begun to change the lives of Ukrainian women. Based on her own recollections, the author tells how the punitive gastronomy of that time worked, how the pseudo-brotherly relations with other Soviet republics often manifested themselves and how Abkhazia hosted Ukrainian schoolchildren a few months before the war between Georgia and Abkhazia.

What in the world do you know about war?!

        by Olha Kari

It is a literary journalism collection about women’s experiences of war: life in occupation, evacuation, being a refuge or an internally displaced person, living near the front and in rear cities; these stories are of younger and older women, those with and without children, those with disabled children, elderly relatives, with pets — all to break the devaluation of contributions of women who were not in the military or front-line battles. These conversations are about challenges and emotions, depreciation of one’s suffering, domestic abuse, starting a new life abroad, loss of a home, generational retraumatization (as it is in the case of Armenian women whose families fleed genocide in Turkey, then Karabakh war, and now Donetsk). They are also about beauty routines, creative projects, emotional growth, women’s health, and hopes for the future.

        My women

by Yuliia Iliukha, Dina Chmuzh, indigo dolorous, Tetiana Kopytova, Nika Liubchych, Olha Lysovska, Hanna Mayson, Iren Moroz, Iryna Mykoliv, Kateryna Poltavska, Kati Prusenko, Olena Pryduvalova, Olha Rotaienko, Olesia Sarycheva, Iryna Sazhynska, Alevtina Shavlach, Iryna Strilbytska, Olena Tsoy, Khrystyna Valko, Viktoria Zakorko, Iryna Zarubina, Julia Zinchenko

This flash fiction collection titled ‘My Women’ is, in fact, a collection of women’s voices. The voices  of those who have been brutally silenced, those who have had their dearest taken away, those who  have persevered and fought for themselves, and those who have broken down and given up. These  succinct, emotionally charged, brutal and sometimes excruciatingly difficult stories portray experiences of life during wartime, each so very different but equally poignant. This book is illustrated by artworks created after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They complement the flash fiction written by the author with their visual narratives, transforming ‘My Women’ into our very own women. Each of the women who contributed to this book — the translator, illustrators, editors, the layout  designer and the publisher — felt a personal connection with the nameless protagonists, finding something within the stories that resonated deeply with them. We hope that readers will also feel similar emotions. Working on this book, we wanted to support and embrace every Ukrainian woman, telling  her, ‘We stand with you, sister.’ ‘My Women’ is a book about each of us — and for every one of us.
