        Knights of the Famished Renaissance

        by Dmytro Horbachov

The phenomenon of the Ukrainian avant-garde was first revealed to the Western world in 1973 at the "Tatlin's dream" London exhibition where for the first time, world-class paintings by little known Ukrainian avant-garde artists Vasyl Yermylov and Oleksandr Bohomazov were exhibited. This famous show raised awareness also of other world-famous masters who, by origin, upbringing, self identification, and national traditions were associated with Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odesa. Apart from the above-mentioned artists, the book mentions “the most faithful son of Ukraine” Davyd Burliuk, as well as Kazymyr Malevych, a Pole who considered himself Ukrainian; Volodymyr Tatlin, a professor of Kyiv Art Institute and bandura player; Oleksandra Ekster, a founder of the Ukrainian school of constructivist scenography; artists of the "Culture League"; Oleksandr Arkhypenko, a phenomenal sculptor. Supplemented with extensive cultural studies and personal memories of the author, the book is designed to present the reader with a complete picture of the origins and formation of the Ukrainian artistic avant-garde. Compiled by Oleksiy Sinchenko.

I Will Mix Your Blood With Coal. Understanding Ukrainian East

        by Oleksandr Mykhed

In 2014, the Russian army, with support from local militants, had occupied parts of Ukraine’s two easternmost regions, the regions that were the beating industrial heart of the socialist utopia in the Soviet era, and where coal extraction has exhausted both the human population and the natural resources. The regions have suffered from the post-Soviet chaos for decades. In the late 2016, the author set out on a research trip to the East to answer the common questions of those who’ve never been to the region. He takes his readers on a complicated, painful and hopeful trip across the Ukrainian East, guiding them through conversations with the locals, archival research, and conversations with prominent cultural fi gures like writer Serhij Zhadan or released after 700 days of terrorist captivity historian Ihor Kozlovskyi that were born in the region. The readers will meet the miners, the Belgian and British investors who founded the eastern cities, the priceless coal, events of the First and Second World War, the bloody Soviet history, the activists who are now working to improve the country, and sweet memories of the lost paradise.

Aesop's fables told by Oleksandr Vyzhenko

The power of Aesop's fables is not in instructive conclusions, but in «Aesopian language», allegorical images of animals: the Wolf embodies cruelty, the Fox - cunning, the Eagle - nobility, etc. It is in this form that the idea becomes clear to the child.

        by Aesop, O.Vyzhenko

2600 years ago, the slave Aesop created more than 400 fables. All this time, they were passed on from mouth to mouth, and in this way about 100 works reached us. The most recent retelling of Aesop's fables for this book was made by a real storyteller, the «Ukrainian nightingale» Oleksandr Vyzhenko. He retold 35 fables! This collection can become a «vaccination» against greed, laziness, pride, ingratitude and other vices.

      • Oleksander Hnylytskyj. Reality of Illusion

by Texts: Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta, Oleksander Soloviov, Solomia Savchuk, Alisa Lozhkina, Tatiana Kochubinska, Kateryna Tykhonenko

This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Reality of Illusion. Oleksander Hnylytskyj (February 23 — March 26, 2017). The exhibition was constructed not as a simple final retrospection. It had a specific conceptual core, reflected in the title – the reality and illusiveness of the world in their intermutation and convergence. It is this core that combines incredible variety into a cohesive artistic world of Oleksandr Hnylytskyj. The artistic path was depicted not in the linear form, but in the conceptual form instead – the exhibition was disintegrated like a puzzle where separate fragments, cycles, blocks and meanings joined and intertwined with unexpected logic, generating a complicated “exhibitional performance.”

        The mace of Illya Muromets

Without faith, life is devoid of a miracle, without a miracle you cannot accomplish a feat.

        by Yriy Ligun

In the ancient caves near Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the relics of the legendary hero of Kyiv, Ilya Muromets, lies. This is a shrine of the Ukrainian Church. The monks speak, the relics give strength to everyone who comes to them. We know about the greatness of the hero from ancient legends. The modern story reproduces the life of people in the period of the 11th century on the lands now occupied by modern Ukraine, and tells about the military exploits of Ilya Muromets. This great warrior had great power and never used it for aggressive campaigns and personal enrichment. When Ilya felt that he was getting old, he came to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, plunging into a lonely prayer not only for his homeland, but also for the souls of the enemies he has had to kill. Vivid, characteristic illustrations of Oleksandr Prodan for this novel help to feel the atmosphere of the past.
