The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.

Joseph Brodsky wurde am 24.Mai 1940 in Leningrad (heute: St. Petersburg) geboren. Anfang der sechziger Jahre erschienen seine ersten Gedichte in sowjetischen Almanachen, hauptsächlich aber in der Untergrund-Publikation Sintakis. 1964 wurde er wegen »sozialen Parasitentums« von einem Leningrader Gericht zu fünf Jahren Zwangsarbeit verurteilt. Nach eineinhalb Jahren Verbannung in Nordrußland erwirkten Anna Achmatowa und andere namhafte Schriftsteller seine Freilassung. 1972 wurde Brodsky aus der Sowjetunion ausgebürgert. Er lebte seither in New York. »Für ein literarisches Schaffen von umfassender Breite, geprägt von gedanklicher Schärfe und dichterischer Intensität« wurde Joseph Brodsky 1987 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Er starb28. Januar 1996 in New York. Michael Krüger wurde am 9. Dezember 1943 in Wittgendorf/Kreis Zeitz geboren. Nach dem Abitur an einem Berliner Gymnasium absolvierte er eine Verlagsbuchhändler- und Buchdruckerlehre. Daneben besuchte er Veranstaltungen der Philosophischen Fakultät als Gasthörer an der Freien Universität Berlin. In den Jahren von 1962-1965 lebte Michael Krüger als Buchhändler in London. 1966 begann seine Tätigkeit als Literaturkritiker. Zwei Jahre später, 1968, übernahm er die Aufgabe des Verlagslektors im Carl Hanser Verlag, dessen Leitung er im Jahre 1986 übernommen hat. Seit 1981 ist er Herausgeber der Literaturzeitschrift Akzente. Im Jahr 1972 veröffentlichte Michael Krüger erstmals seine Gedichte, und 1984 debütierte er als Erzähler mit dem Band Was tun? Eine altmodische Geschichte. Es folgten weitere zahlreiche Erzählbände, Romane, Editionen und Übersetzungen. Die Cellospielerin ist sein erster Roman im Suhrkamp Verlag. Michael Krüger lebt in München. Felix Philipp Ingold, 1942 geboren, Slawist, Prof. em., Schriftsteller und Übersetzer, vor allem aus dem Französischen und Russischen. Autor zahlreicher Werke zur russischen Kulturgeschichte. Er lebt in Zürich und Romainmôtier. Alexander Nitzberg, geboren 1969 in Moskau, lebt als freier Schriftsteller und Übersetzer aus dem Russischen (u. a. Charms, Majakowski und Puschkin) in Wien. In this book, Michael R. Lynn analyses the popularisation of science in Enlightenment France. He examines the content of popular science, the methods of dissemination, the status of the popularisers and the audience, and the settings for dissemination and appropriation. Lynn introduces individuals like Jean-Antoine Nollet, who made a career out of applying electric shocks to people, and Perrin, who used his talented dog to lure customers to his physics show. He also examines scientifically oriented clubs like Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier's Musée de Monsieur which provided locations for people interested in science. Phenomena such as divining rods, used to find water and ores as well as to solve crimes; and balloons, the most spectacular of all types of popular science, demonstrate how people made use of their new knowledge. Lynn's study provides a clearer understanding of the role played by science in the Republic of Letters and the participation of the general population in the formation of public opinion on scientific matters.

This book outlines the ways sport helps to create transnational social fields that interconnect migrants dispersed across a region known as the Black Atlantic: England, North America and the Caribbean. Many Caribbean men's stories about their experiences migrating to Canada, settling in Toronto, finding jobs and travelling involved some contact with a cricket and social club. This book offers a unique contribution to black diaspora studies through showing sport as a means of allaying the pain of ageing in the diaspora, creating transnational social networks and marking ethnic boundaries on a local scale. The book also brings black diaspora analysis to sport research, and through a close look at what goes on before, during and after cricket matches provides insights into the dis-unities, contradictions and complexities of Afro-diasporic identity in multicultural Canada. It will be of interest to students and scholars in sociology, sport studies and black diaspora studies.

This edited collection explores the implications of the creation of the Soviet Union and the Communist International for black and colonial liberation struggles across the African diaspora. It examines the critical intellectual influence of Marxism and Bolshevism on the current of revolutionary 'black internationalism' and analyses how 'Red October' was viewed within the contested articulations of different struggles against racism and colonialism. Challenging European-centred understandings of the Russian Revolution and the global left, The Red and the Black offers new insights on the relations between Communism, various lefts and anti-colonialisms across the Black Atlantic - including Garveyism and various other strands of Pan-Africanism. Bekanntschaft u. a. mit Savigny und Adelbert von Chamisso in Berlin. 1844 Entlassung aus dem Staatsdienst. 1855 Übersiedlung nach Neiße.

Marcel Reich-Ranicki wurde am 2. Juni 1920 in Wloclawek / Polen geboren. Sein Vater, David Reich, war ein polnischer Jude, seine Mutter, Helene eine deutsche Jüdin. Die Familie siedelte 1929 nach Berlin um. Dort besuchte er das Gymnasium. Im Herbst 1938, kurz nach dem Abitur, wurde er verhaftet und nach Polen deportiert, wo er ab 1940 im Warschauer Getto leben musste. Anfang 1943 gelang ihm zusammen mit seiner Frau Teofila die Flucht aus dem Getto in den Warschauer Untergrund. Seine Eltern und sein Bruder wurden von den Nationalsozialisten ermordet. Zunächst im Polnischen Diplomatischen Dienst tätig, fand er seine Berufung schließlich in der Literatur. Er arbeitete für Zeitungen, im Rundfunk und als Übersetzer. 1958 siedelte Reich-Ranicki in die Bundesrepublik Deutschland über. Er lebte von 1959 bis 1973 in Hamburg, dann zog er nach Frankfurt am Main. Er war für die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Die Welt und die Wochenzeitung Die Zeit als Literaturkritiker tätig und gehörte von 1958 bis 1967 als solcher der Gruppe 47 an. 1968 war er Gastprofessor für deutsche Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts an der Washington University in St. Louis (USA) und 1969 am Middlebury College (USA). Von 1971 bis 1975 lehrte er als ständiger Gastprofessor für Neue Deutsche Literatur an den Universitäten Stockholm und Uppsala. Ab 1974 war er Honorarprofessor an der Universität Tübingen, in den Jahren 1991/92 bekleidete er die Heinrich Heine-Gastprofessur an der Universität Düsseldorf. Marcel Reich-Ranicki war Ehrendoktor der Universitäten Uppsala (1972), Augsburg (1992), Bamberg (1992), Düsseldorf (1997), Utrecht (2001) und München (2002). Nachdem er 1988 die Leitung des Literaturteils der FAZ abgegeben hatte, schrieb er weiter Kritiken in verschiedenen Zeitungen und wirkte von nun an auch im Fernsehen: Von 1988 bis 2001 leitete er das Literarische Quartett im ZDF. Reich-Ranicki wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen geehrt und galt als einer der bedeutendsten Literaturkritiker Deutschlands. Er starb am 18. September 2013 im Alter von 93 Jahren.
