The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.

The Romantic Vampire and its Progeny

John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's story transformed the shambling, mindless monster of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive aristocrat that stalked London society rather than being confined to the hinterlands of Eastern Europe. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction. Anfang der sechziger Jahre erschienen seine ersten Gedichte in sowjetischen Almanachen, hauptsächlich aber in der Untergrund-Publikation Sintakis. 1964 wurde er wegen »sozialen Parasitentums« von einem Leningrader Gericht zu fünf Jahren Zwangsarbeit verurteilt. Nach eineinhalb Jahren Verbannung in Nordrußland erwirkten Anna Achmatowa und andere namhafte Schriftsteller seine Freilassung. 1972 wurde Brodsky aus der Sowjetunion ausgebürgert. Er lebte seither in New York. »Für ein literarisches Schaffen von umfassender Breite, geprägt von gedanklicher Schärfe und dichterischer Intensität« wurde Joseph Brodsky 1987 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Er starb28. Januar 1996 in New York. Michael Krüger wurde am 9. Dezember 1943 in Wittgendorf/Kreis Zeitz geboren. Nach dem Abitur an einem Berliner Gymnasium absolvierte er eine Verlagsbuchhändler- und Buchdruckerlehre. Daneben besuchte er Veranstaltungen der Philosophischen Fakultät als Gasthörer an der Freien Universität Berlin. In den Jahren von 1962-1965 lebte Michael Krüger als Buchhändler in London. 1966 begann seine Tätigkeit als Literaturkritiker. Zwei Jahre später, 1968, übernahm er die Aufgabe des Verlagslektors im Carl Hanser Verlag, dessen Leitung er im Jahre 1986 übernommen hat. Seit 1981 ist er Herausgeber der Literaturzeitschrift Akzente. Im Jahr 1972 veröffentlichte Michael Krüger erstmals seine Gedichte, und 1984 debütierte er als Erzähler mit dem Band Was tun? Eine altmodische Geschichte. Es folgten weitere zahlreiche Erzählbände, Romane, Editionen und Übersetzungen. Die Cellospielerin ist sein erster Roman im Suhrkamp Verlag. Michael Krüger lebt in München. Felix Philipp Ingold, 1942 geboren, Slawist, Prof. em., Schriftsteller und Übersetzer, vor allem aus dem Französischen und Russischen. Autor zahlreicher Werke zur russischen Kulturgeschichte. Er lebt in Zürich und Romainmôtier. Alexander Nitzberg, geboren 1969 in Moskau, lebt als freier Schriftsteller und Übersetzer aus dem Russischen (u. a. Charms, Majakowski und Puschkin) in Wien. A snapshot of the American avant-garde in the 1930s

Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.
