Pinter & Martin is an independent publishing company based in London. Most of our books are distributed worldwide. We publish authors who challenge the status quo. We specialise in pregnancy, birth & parenting, health & nutrition, psychology and yoga. Pinter & Martin was founded on May 9th, 1997 by the writer and film-maker Martin Wagner and childbirth educator Maria Pinter, when we realised that Stanley Milgram's extraordinary book Obedience to Authority was out of print in the UK. Some milestones were the publication of Childbirth without Fear in 2004, which started our ever-growing pregnancy, birth & parenting list; Irrationality in 2007, which was our first genuine bestseller; and the publication of The Politics of Breastfeeding in 2009, followed by our first book for La Leche League International, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding in 2010. In 2015 Pinter & Martin acquired the yoga publisher YogaWords, which was originally a joint venture by Paul Walker (1961-2016) of YogaMatters and Martin Wagner. In April 2016 Pinter & Martin opened effraspace a multi-purpose venue dedicated to pregnancy, birth & parenting education. In 2017 we published the bestselling The Positive Birth Book and Manhood, followed by Womanhood in 2019. We continue to publish books which are close to our hearts. This is the most thoroughly investigated edition of Volpone to date, based on a wider collation of the 1607 quarto and 1616 folio versions than was previously possible. It calls into question several accepted textual conclusions. The introduction sets Volpone in the context of Jonson's career at the time of writing and introduces new material on its relation to the Reynard beast epic and the commedia dell' arte. Ambiguities in the play are discussed with reference to two Renaissance perversions of the myth of the Golden Age. Particular attention is paid to the rhythmic effects of the play in performance, especially interweavings of the main plot and subplot. Fresh suggestions are made about the play's opening and its controversial conclusion in the light of experiments that have been made in performance since Volpone 's stage revival in 1921. The modernized text is accompanied by full commentary, notes and illustrations. The appendices include a discussion by John Cutts of the original music, passages translated from the original sources and analogues, and a full record of the play's modern stage history, its many adaptations, and its transformations into opera, musical comedy, film and television. ;

The two books endeavour to historicise the British left, detailing but also seeking to understand the diverse currents that comprise 'the far left'. Their objective is less to intervene in ongoing issues relevant to the left and politics more generally, than to uncover and explore the traditions and issues that have preoccupied leftist groups, activists and struggles. Martin Walser wurde am 24. März 1927 in Wasserburg am Bodensee geboren. Nach seinem Arbeitsdienst erlebte er das Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges von 1944 bis 1945 als Soldat der Wehrmacht. Nach Kriegsende machte er 1946 in Lindau am Bodensee-Gymnasium das Abitur und studierte an den Universitäten Regensburg und Tübingen Literaturwissenschaft, Geschichte und Philosophie. Mit einer Dissertation zu Franz Kafka wurde er 1951 in Tübingen promoviert. Von 1949 bis 57 arbeitete er beim Süddeutschen Rundfunk. In dieser Zeit unternahm er Reisen für Funk und Fernsehen nach Italien, Frankreich, England, CSSR und Polen und schrieb erste Hörspiele.1950 heiratete er Katharina Neuner-Jehle. Aus dieser Ehe gingen die Töchter Franziska, Alissa, Johanna und Theresia hervor. Seit 1953 wurde Walser regelmäßig zu den Tagungen der Gruppe 47 eingeladen, die ihn 1955 für die Erzählung Templones Ende auszeichnete. Sein erster Roman Ehen in Philippsburg erschien 1957 und wurde ein großer Erfolg. Walser lebte von da an mit seiner Familie als freier Schriftsteller erst in Friedrichshafen und dann in Nußdorf am Bodensee.

Und weil dieser Roman einer großen Liebe von 1929 bis 1987 in Deutschland spielt und von Dresden über Leipzig nach Berlin und nach Wiesbaden führt, wird er unwillkürlich auch ein deutsches Epos dieser Zeit.

Christoph Martin Wieland wurde am 5. September 1733 in Oberholzheim geboren. Nach dem Besuch des pietistischen Internats Kloster Berge bei Magdeburg begann er 1749 ein Philosophie-Studium in Erfurt. Ein Jahr später wechselte er zu einem Jura-Studium nach Tübingen. Ab 1752 arbeitete er als Hauslehrer in der Schweiz. Während seiner Professur an der Universität Erfurt von 1769 bis 1772 gründete er die Zeitschrift »Der Teutsche Merkur«, die eine herausragende Stellung im Geistesleben der Zeit einnahm und so zu Weimars Rolle als literarisches Zentrum beitrug. Er veröffentlichte im Merkur eine Vielzahl eigener Essays und Aufsätze, beschäftigte sich mit philosophischen, politischen, gesellschaftlichen und ästhetischen Fragen. Daneben schrieb er Romane, Satiren und Dramen und übersetzte Shakespeare ins Deutsche. Christoph Martin Wieland starb am 20. Januar 1813 in Weimar.
