EXCAVANDO LA CIUDAD DE DAVID – El lugar en el que comenzף la historia de Jerusalיn Las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en los 150 últimos años han identificado a la colina sudoriental de Jerusalén, fuera de las murallas de la Ciudad Vieja, como la Ciudad de David bíblica. El reconocimiento cada vez mayor de que esta colina es efectivamente la parte más antigua de Jerusalén ha llevado a muchos estudiosos a excavarla. Desde las primeras excavaciones hechas por Charles Warren en 1867 hasta el presente, catorce expediciones arqueológicas han trabajado allí, lo que ha hecho que la Ciudad de David sea uno de los sitios más excavados de Israel. Equipos británicos, alemanes, franceses e israelíes han excavado en el lugar bajo cuatro autoridades diferentes: el gobierno otomano, el mandato británico, el gobierno jordano y el israelí y han producido una asombrosa cantidad de información. Richard J. Bernstein, geboren 1932, war Professor für Philosophie an der New Yorker New School for Social Research, an der auch Hannah Arendt bis zu ihrem Tod im Jahr 1975 lehrte. Am 4. Juli 2022 verstarb Bernstein in New York. Jacob Taubes (1923-1987) war zuletzt Professor für Judaistik und Hermeneutik an der Freien Universität Berlin sowie ständiger Gastdozent an der Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris. Jürgen Habermas wurde am 18. Juni 1929 in Düsseldorf geboren. Von 1949 bis 1954 studierte er in Göttingen, Zürich und Bonn die Fächer Philosophie, Geschichte, Psychologie, Deutsche Literatur und Ökonomie. Er lehrte unter anderem an den Universitäten Heidelberg und Frankfurt am Main sowie der University of California in Berkeley und war Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts zur Erforschung der Lebensbedingungen der wissenschaftlich-technischen Welt in Starnberg. Jürgen Habermas erhielt zahlreiche Ehrendoktorwürden und Preise, darunter den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (2001) und den Kyoto-Preis (2004). Geboren am 5. Januar 1927 in Marburg, studierte Dieter Henrich von 1946 bis 1950 in Marburg, Frankfurt und Heidelberg (u.a. bei Hans-Georg Gadamer) Philosophie. 1950 Dissertation: Die Grundlagen der Wissenschaftslehre Max Webers. Nach der Habilitation 1955/56 Lehrtätigkeiten als ordentlicher Professor in Berlin (ab 1960) und Heidelberg (ab 1965), Gastprofessuren in den USA ( Harvard, Columbia, University of Michigan, Yale); 1981 Berufung an die Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, Ordinarius für Philosophie bis zur Emeritierung 1994. Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

Karl-Otto Apel, geboren 1922 in Düsseldorf, gestorben 2017 in Niedernhausen, war Professor für Philosophie an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt/M. Im Suhrkamp Verlag sind u. a. erschienen: Transformation der Philosophie (1999), Diskurs und Verantwortung (1988), Auseinandersetzungen in Erprobung des transzendentalpragmatischen Ansatzes (1998). Niklas Luhmann wurde am 8. Dezember 1927 als Sohn eines Brauereibesitzers in Lüneburg geboren und starb am 6. November 1998 in Oerlinghausen bei Bielefeld. Im Alter von 17 Jahren wurde er als Luftwaffenhelfer eingezogen und war 1945 in amerikanischer Kriegsgefangenschaft. Von 1946 bis 1949 studierte er Rechtswissenschaften in Freiburg und absolvierte seine Referendarausbildung. 1952 begann er mit dem Aufbau seiner berühmten Zettelkästen. Von 1954 bis1962 war er Verwaltungsbeamter in Lüneburg, zunächst am Oberverwaltungsgericht Lüneburg, danach als Landtagsreferent im niedersächsischen Kultusministerium. 1960 heiratete er Ursula von Walter. Aus der Ehe gingen drei Kinder hervor. Seine Ehefrau verstarb 1977. Luhmann erhielt 1960/1961 ein Fortbildungs-Stipendium für die Harvard-Universität. Dort kam er in Kontakt mit Talcott Parsons und dessen strukturfunktionaler Systemtheorie. 1964 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Buch Funktionen und Folgen formaler Organisation. 1965 wird Luhmann von Helmut Schelsky als Abteilungsleiter an die Sozialforschungsstelle Dortmund geholt. 1966 wurden Funktionen und Folgen formaler Organisation sowie Recht und Automation in der öffentlichen Verwaltung als Dissertation und Habilitation an der Universität Münster angenommen. Von 1968 bis 1993 lehrte er als Professor für Soziologie an der Universität Bielefeld. 1997 erschien sein Hauptwerk, das Resultat dreißigjähriger Forschung: Die Gesellschaft der Gesellschaft. Cases of citation presents a history of artists who incorporated literary references into their work from the 1960s onwards. Through a series of object-focused chapters that each take up a singular 'case of citation', the collection considers how literary citation emerged as a viable and urgent strategy for artists during this period. It surveys eleven artworks by a diverse group of artists - including David Wojnarowicz, Lis Rhodes, Romare Bearden and Silvia Kolbowski - whose citations draw on works as varied as Karl Marx's Das Kapital and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The book also features an interview with pioneering feminist artist Elaine Reichek that discusses her career-long commitment to working with text. Together, the artworks and cited texts are approached from various critical angles, with each author questioning and complicating the ways in which we can 'read' textual citations in art.

It explores the British and European reception of Blake's work from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a particular focus on the counterculture. Opening with two articles by the late Michael Horovitz, an important figure in the 'Blake Renaissance' of the 1960s, the issue goes on to investigate the ideological struggle over Blake in the early part of the twentieth century, with particular reference to W. B. Yeats. This is followed by articles on the artistic avant-garde and underground of the 1960s and on Blake's significance for science fiction authors of the 1970s. Max Frisch, geboren am 15. Mai 1911 in Zürich, arbeitete zunächst als Journalist, später als Architekt, bis ihm mit seinem Roman Stiller (1954) der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller gelang. Es folgten die Romane Homo faber (1957) und Mein Name sei Gantenbein (1964) sowie Erzählungen, Tagebücher, Theaterstücke, Hörspiele und Essays. Frisch starb am 4. April 1991 in Zürich. Der Wissenschaftler, Kulturkritiker und Schriftsteller wurde am 19. März 1907 in Köln geboren. Er studierte Jura, Geschichte und Philosophie in Köln, Bonn und Berlin. Als Jude verfolgt, war er von 1933 bis 1945 in der Emigration in Frankreich und in der Schweiz. Von 1948 bis 1963 lehrte er Geschichte der Nationalliteraturen an der Universität Leipzig. Zwischen 1965 und 1973 war er Professor für Deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Technischen Universität Hannover. Danach lebte er als Honorarprofessor in Tübingen. 1935, im Exil, begann er mit den Vorarbeiten für sein großes Werk über Georg Büchner; ohne Zuspruch von Carl J. Burckhardt wäre das Opus magnum nicht beendet worden. 1972 erschien eine Neuausgabe im Suhrkamp Verlag. 40 Titel von ihm sind seitdem in »seinem« Verlag publiziert worden, darunter Bücher über Goethe und Brecht, Thomas Mann und Richard Wagner; der letzte in diesen Tagen: »Erinnerungen an Willy Brandt«. Bundeskanzler Schröder drückte darüber brieflich noch seine Hochachtung aus. Hans Mayer war ein Lehrer für uns Deutsche. Ein Wissenschaftler, der mitten im Stalinismus Autoren wie Kafka, Proust, Joyce und Bloch verteidigte, der, wo immer in der Welt er lehrte, Literatur befragte, ob sie geeignet sei, Humanität zu befördern. Ein Gelehrter zwischen den Fronten, dessen wichtigste Werke nicht zufällig den Unbotmäßigen und »Außenseitern« gelten. Seine Erinnerungen waren Erinnerungen eines »Deutschen auf Widerruf«. Die Beschwörungen eines anderen Deutschland bereiteten neuen Kräften wie Uwe Johnson den Weg. Hans Mayer ist Ehrenbürger der Städte Köln und Leipzig, Ehrendoktor der Universitäten in Brüssel, Wisconsin und Leipzig, Ehrenprofessor der Universität Peking, Träger des »Großen Verdienstkreuzes mit Stern und Schulterband der Bundesrepublik Deutschland«. Hans Mayer, Nestor der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft, starb am Sonnabend, dem 19. Mai 2001, im Alter von 94 Jahren in Tübingen.
