        Geist, Sprache und Gesellschaft

        Philosophie der wirklichen Welt

        by John R. Searle, Harvey P. Gavagai

        John R. Searle gehört zu den wirkungsmächtigsten Philosophen der Gegenwart. Er hat bahnbrechende Untersuchungen über Sprechakte veröffentlicht, eine eigene Konzeption von Intentionalität vorgelegt und das Funktionieren gesellschaftlicher Realität erklärt. Er hat die Diskussion um künstliche Intelligenz mit seinem Bild des »chinesischen Zimmers« bereichert und damit allen Vergleichen des menschlichen Geistes mit dem Computer ein vieldiskutiertes Argument beschert. Als ebenso geistreicher wie polemischer Autor mischt er sich immer wieder in aktuelle Debatten ein und verblüfft mit einfachen, aber schlagkräftigen Antworten. In seinem neuen Buch zieht Searle die Summe aus diesen Themen. Dabei legt er seine Sicht des »externen Realismus« dar, erklärt den Geist als ein natürliches Phänomen, das kausal vom Hirn abhängt, und löst das Leib-Seele-Problem auf. Er gibt eine kurze Darstellung seiner Ansichten über Intentionalität und Sprechakte und beantwortet die Frage, wie es zur Bildung einer sozialen Wirklichkeit kommt. Durch die leichtverständliche Darstellung und Searles Fähigkeit, komplexe Probleme in wenigen Sätzen zu skizzieren und zu lösen, eignet sich das Buch nicht nur als Einführung in Searles Denken, sondern auch als Einführung in die Gegenwartsphilosophie überhaupt.

        Intentionalität

        Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes

        by John R. Searle, Harvey P. Gavagai

        "Nach seinen sprachphilosophischen Arbeiten (Sprechakte, Ausdruck und Bedeutung) legt John Searle hier eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vor, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang zu den früheren Arbeiten steht. Es geht um geistige Zustände und Ereignisse, die sich auf Gegenstände und Sachverhalte beziehen. Überzeugungen, Wünsche, Absichten und Befürchtungen sind Beispiele für Geisteszustände mit einem solchen Bezug; wer sich in einem dieser Zustände befindet, der glaubt, wünscht, beabsichtigt oder befürchtet, daß etwas Bestimmtes der Fall sei oder sein werde. Diese Zustände haben einen Inhalt, auf den sie »gerichtet« sind. Das unterscheidet sie von andern Geisteszuständen wie etwa Schmerzen, Niedergeschlagenheit oder Nervosität, die zwar eine Ursache, aber keinen Inhalt haben. »Intentional« werden die Zustände mit Inhalt genannt. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner sprechakttheoretischen Erläuterung des Begriffs der sprachlichen Bedeutung hatte Searle auf intentionale Zustände wie Überzeugungen und Absichten zurückgegriffen, die jedoch im Rahmen der sprachphilosophischen Untersuchungen unerläutert blieben. Das Problem der sprachlichen Bedeutung wurde nur bis zu dem Punkt behandelt, an dem das Problem des geistigen Inhalts sich stellt. Die neue Arbeit Searles setzt nun gerade da an, wo die Sprechakte endeten. In ihr wird gewissermaßen das theoretische Fundament zur Sprachphilosophie nachgeliefert. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es Searle um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. Vielmehr setzt er sich in einem weiteren, vornehmlich kritischen Teil - von seiner Theorie ausgehend - auch ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen »nicht-deskriptivistischen« Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Bürge und D. Kaplan vertreten oder angeregt wurden."

        Exhibiting the Empire

        Cultures of display and the British Empire

        by John McAleer, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie, John Mackenzie

        Exhibiting the empire considers how a whole range of cultural products - from paintings, prints, photographs, panoramas and 'popular' texts to ephemera, newspapers and the press, theatre and music, exhibitions, institutions and architecture - were used to record, celebrate and question the development of the British Empire. It represents a significant and original contribution to our understanding of the relationship between culture and empire. Written by leading scholars from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, individual chapters bring fresh perspectives to the interpretation of media, material culture and display, and their interaction with history. Taken together, this collection suggests that the history of empire needs to be, in part at least, a history of display and of reception. This book will be essential reading for scholars and students interested in British history, the history of empire, art history and the history of museums and collecting. ;

        Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France

        by Jeff Wallace, John Whale, John Whale

        First published in 1790 Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France initiated a debate not only about the nature of the unprecedented historical events taking place across the channel, but about the very identity of the British state and its people. It has subsequently been appropriated by a variety of conservative and liberal thinkers and has played a major role in our understanding of the relationship between rhetoric, aesthetics and politics. In this volume, leading Burke scholars offer new and challenging essays which allow us to reconsider the historical context in which Reflections on the Revolution in France was written. The essays consider its reception, its engagements in the discourses of nationalism and toleration, its legacy to English and Irish writers of the Romantic period and its impact within our contemporary cultural and critical theory. The volume demonstrates a range of interdisciplinary critical methods and cultural perspectives from which to read Burke's most famous work. This volume will be the ideal companion to Burke's Reflections for all students of literature, history, politics and Irish studies. ;

        Representing Africa

        Landscape, exploration and empire in Southern Africa, 1780–1870

        by John McAleer, Andrew Thompson, John Mackenzie

        Southern Africa played a varied but vital role in Britain's maritime and imperial stories: it was one of the most intricate pieces in the British imperial strategic jigsaw, and representations of southern African landscape and maritime spaces reflect its multifaceted position. Representing Africa examines the ways in which British travellers, explorers and artists viewed southern Africa in a period of evolving and expanding British interest in the region. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, contemporary travelogues and visual images, many of which have not previously been published in this context, this book posits landscape as a useful prism through which to view changing British attitudes towards Africa. Richly illustrated, this book will be essential reading for scholars and students interested in British, African, imperial and exploration history, art history, and landscape and environment studies. ;
