Der amerikanische Soziologe Erik Olin Wright hat sich ein Leben lang mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt und die bedeutendste sozialwissenschaftliche Neuformulierung der Klassentheorie vorgelegt. Sein klassischer Aufsatz »Klasse verstehen« sowie ein ausführliches Interview mit Wright darüber, warum Klasse zählt, liegen mit diesem Band nun erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung vor. Die Klassentheorie kennt drei große Traditionen: Stratifizierungsansätze definieren Klasse anhand individueller Eigenschaften und Lebensbedingungen, weberianische Ansätze anhand von Mechanismen der Chancenhortung und marxistische Ansätze anhand von Mechanismen der Ausbeutung und Herrschaft. Für Wright besteht die zentrale Aufgabe nun darin, diese Mechanismen zu verstehen, um sie in einem Erklärungsmodell zu vereinen, das die Mikroebene der Klasseneffekte, die sich an Eigenschaften von Individuen zeigen, mit den Wirkungen der Makroebene, die durch die Art der strukturellen Positionen auf dem Markt und in der wirtschaftlichen Produktion generiert werden, verbindet. Ein Meilenstein der Klassentheorie!

Concentrating on films from the 1950s to the present day, the book explores religious films, musicals, 'art-house horror', science-fiction, social realism and fantasy. It includes reference to Erice's The Spirit of The Beehive, del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Mañas's El Bola and the Marisol films. The book also draws on a century of filmmaking in Spain and intersects with recent revelations concerning the horrors of the Spanish past. The child is a potent motif for the loss of historical memory and for its recuperation through cinema. This book is suitable for scholars and undergraduates working in the areas of Spanish cinema, Spanish cultural studies and cinema studies.

This book explores responses to poverty in eighteenth-century England, with an eye to some of the odder manifestations of charity and poor relief. Whether discussing proposals for vast inland colonies or cosy firesides, men and women demonstrated that imagination, excitement and experiment were as important as systematic argument in making early-modern social policy. Ceremonies and material objects encapsulated ideas and attracted supporters; energy poured into realising imagined prospects in buildings, streetscapes and landscapes across England and beyond. Charity and Poverty in England aims to shed fresh light on ideas and lived experience, on cultural worlds in which social relations were unevenly worked out. It analyses the settings in which gentlemen, magistrates, officials, pamphleteers, ladies and neighbours reacted to the poverty of others, and poor people asserted their own beliefs and experiences. The book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of eighteenth-century cultural history and the history of social policy. ;

Oscar (Fingal O’Flahertie Wills) Wilde wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Dublin als Sohn des Arztes William Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee geboren. Er studierte klassische Literatur am Trinity College in Dublin und am Magdalen College in Oxford. 1879 ging er nach London, wo er sich bald durch seinen extravaganten Lebensstil und seine rhetorische Gewandtheit einen Namen machte. Nach Reisen in die USA, nach Kanada und Frankreich arbeitete Wilde zunächst für verschiedene Zeitungen als Lektor und Herausgeber. Seit 1884 mit Constance Lloyd verheiratet, schrieb und veröffentlichte er 1888 für seine eigenen Kinder die Märchensammlung The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In den folgenden Jahren entstanden weitere Erzählungen (wie The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891) und zahlreiche Bühnenstücke (wie The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895), die außerordentliches literarisches und gesellschaftliches Aufsehen erregten. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolges stürzte ihn dann jedoch der Skandal um das langjährige Verhältnis mit Lord Alfred Douglas in den Ruin. Wilde verlor eine Verleumdungsklage gegen Douglas Vater, der ihn der Sodomie bezichtigt hatte, und wurde selbst in einem Strafprozeß wegen Unzucht zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis in Reading floh er vor der gesellschaftlichen Ächtung unter falschem Namen nach Paris. Völlig mittellos starb er hier am 30. November 1900. Kurt Landauer (1884-1961), Präsident von Bayern München von 1913-33 und wieder ab 1947. Hedwig Lachmann, geboren 1865 in Stolp und verstorben 1918 in Krumbach, war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin.
