Nach seiner Befreiung und Krönung zum König von Frankreich gelang ihm mit dem Edikt von Nantes, das den französischen Protestanten in ihrer Religionsausübung entgegenkam, ein Schritt zur Befriedung der Parteien – der von seinen Nachfolgern rasch rückgängig gemacht wurde. Henris Ende durch das Attentat eines religiösen Eiferers war die fast zwangsläufige Folge der Probleme in dem von Religionskriegen erschütterten Land. Zum 400. Todestag Heinrichs IV. im Mai 2010 legt Uwe Schultz, einer der besten Kenner der Geschichte Frankreichs, eine grundlegende Biographie des Königs vor.
