by H. C. Artmann, Gerald Bisinger, Gerald Bisinger

        Bovine Tuberculosis

by Mark Chambers, Stephen Gordon, Francisco Olea-Popelka, Paul Barrow

This book is contemporary, topical and global in its approach, and provides an essential, comprehensive treatise on bovine tuberculosis and the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium bovis. Bovine tuberculosis remains a major cause of economic loss in cattle industries worldwide, exacerbated in some countries by the presence of a substantial wildlife reservoir. It is a major zoonosis, causing human infection through consumption of unpasteurised milk or by close contact with infected animals. Following a systematic approach, expert international authors cover epidemiology and the global situation; microbial virulence and pathogenesis; host responses to the pathogen; and diagnosis and control of the disease. Aimed at researchers and practising veterinarians, this book is essential for those needing comprehensive information on the pathogen and disease, and offers a summary of key information learned from human tuberculosis research. It will be useful to those studying the infection and for those responsible for controlling the disease.

        Vivien Leigh

        Actress and icon

by Kate Dorney, Maggie B. Gale

This edited volume provides new readings of the life and career of iconic actress Vivien Leigh (1913-67), written by experts from theatre and film studies and curators from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The collection uses newly accessible family archives to explore the intensely complex relationship between Vivien Leigh's approach to the craft of acting for stage and screen, and how she shaped, developed and projected her public persona as one of the most talked about and photographed actresses of her era. With key contributors from the UK, France and the US, chapters range from analyses of her work on stage and screen to her collaborations with designers and photographers, an analysis of her fan base, her interior designs and the 'public ownership' of Leigh's celebrity status during her lifetime and beyond.

        How Philosophers Fail Themselves

        The somewhat different historyof philosophy

        by Otto A. Böhmer

        — Philosophy for beginners — For philosophy enthusiasts — A pleasant read This truly brilliant book tells of the sometimes sublime, sometimes exhilarating efforts of philosophers to maintain their attitude in everyday life without forgetting the meaning of their own words – and how they ultimately failed to do so. The minor, sometimes bizarre events in the lives of the great philosophers fit so aptly in the picture of the respective philosophy that one has to assume they could have been conceived to keep the associated intellectual giant in a strange and memorable mood. A book of cheerful science, full of wit, narrative and linguistic eloquence.

Thinking About Thinking in IB Schools

        by Robin Fogarty, Brian Pete

Thinking about thinking in IB schools: How we know what we know by Robin Fogarty and Brian Pete is intended to complement and supplement the curriculum framework of international schools, particularly those that utilise the International Baccalaureate program. Undergirdings the book, ‘How do we know what we know?’ is the quintessential question that drives our quest to learn, explore, investigate and, in the end, validate and justify. The discussions within this resource target the micro-skills of thinking, or the ‘think links’ that act like connectors between subject matter and relevant processes across and within learning areas. These target skills include analysing, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, generalising, making inferences, discerning cause and effect, imagining, visualising and hypothesising. Each chapter features instructional strategies to teach, practise and apply deeper thinking with the rich and rigorous content of the international curriculum. Within Thinking about thinking, seven thinking skill areas are delineated and each of the seven chapters features lively discussion, explicit ways of thinking about particular ways of thinking and engaging strategies to involve students in the act of deep thinking about the required content. In addition, the chapters showcase compelling stories that serve to illustrate key points and offer specific and explicit transfer strategies to foster immediate, authentic transfer and application to the F–12 classroom.

        Contract Children

        Questioning Surrogacy

        by Danna, Daniela

Surrogate motherhood is expanding all over the world. Debates rage over how public policy should consider the signing away of the parental rights of birth mothers in favor of a 'commissioning' couple or an individual. In this book, Daniela Danna describes the situation in English-speaking countries and worldwide, from California to Greece, presenting the legal alternatives regulating (or not) these peculiar exchanges. Should surrogacy remain a private agreement? Should it be treated as an enforceable contract? Are surrogate mothers workers? What happens inside the countries that have chosen different ways of handling this new and controversial matter? And, the most important question of all: How can we live in this era of new techno-medical possibilities and try to stay human? Can we resist commodification in the field of human relations concerning procreation? Contract Children discusses the different ways available to obtain a child through surrogate motherhood. It is fundamental reading for anyone wanting to be involved in the surrogacy process. It gives prospective surrogate mothers and infertile couples the background information necessary for their own informed decision. It is also an essential instrument for policy makers and activists in the field of women's rights, social justice, and children's rights. The question of how to publicly deal with surrogate motherhood touches upon our social vision of motherhood, ultimately marking the position of women in contemporary society.

        The New Third Rome

The Russian Orthodox Church and Web 2.0

by Østbø, Jardar / Reihe herausgegeben von Umland, Andreas; Vorwort von Kolstø, Pål

This in-depth analysis discloses the sources, contents, and implications of post-Soviet Russian messianism. Since its rediscovery 150 years ago, writers ranging from Western critics of Moscow’s foreign policy to ardent Russian imperialists have used the concept of Moscow as the Third Rome as ‘evidence’ of Russia’s particularism and expansionism. But for the original author of the formula of the Third Rome, the Orthodox monk Filofei of Pskov, it was a religious concept he referred to when criticizing what he saw as the apostasy of his time. This book is the first to look beyond this dichotomy. Drawing on theories of political myth and concepts of nationalism, Østbø develops a novel analytical perspective. Rather than dismissing political uses of the religious, medieval idea as ‘wrong’, the author analyzes the modern content and ideological function of the myth of the Third Rome. Through case studies of four prominent nationalist intellectuals, Vadim Tsymburskii, Aleksandr Dugin, Nataliia Narochnitskaia and Egor Kholmogorov, the author shows how this messianic myth is used to ‘reinvent’ Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. These writers use their own constructed image of the Russian nation to demonstrate what Russia ‘should be’ and its allegedly rightful place in the world. Existing in radically diverging versions, the myth of the Third Rome routinely conveys rabid anti-Westernism. At ‘best’, it is employed to forge a self-image of the Russians as an essentially isolationist civilization. At worst, it is used to ‘explain’ how the Russians are divinely elected to be the rulers of a world empire.

        Pferde verstehen

Mit Achtung und Respekt Vertrauen herstellen

by Kreuer, Susanne / Vorwort von Hackl, Bernd

Horses are extraordinary animals and for centuries have exerted a special fascination on people. In order to be able to come into trusting contact with them, we must learn to better understand their nature, their essence. Horses are a mirror of our being, and understanding them is a moving journey to understanding ourselves. Sensitive, arousing and competent, Susanne Kreuer explains the feelings, senses, development, language, and instincts of horses and humans. How can we be fair and just when dealing with our horse and build a harmonious partnership? What is the human part in problems with the horse, and what can we do to work on ourselves in the sense of the horse? With new findings from modern psychology and behavioural research, as well as proven knowledge from her many years of professional experience as a coach in business and science, Susanne Kreuer enables her readers to see the world through the eyes of the horse and at the same time deepen their view of themselves. Kreuer's view of the similarities and differences in the nature of man and horse makes it possible to change unconscious patterns of behaviour that lead to misunderstanding, to replace them with a strategy based on partnership and thus to find a better, more harmonious way of dealing with horses. Kreuer's book enables the reader not only to take an important step towards an empathetic and understanding approach to their horse, but also to gain a clearer look at themselves.

by Trisch, Oliver / Reihe herausgegeben von Hahn, Harald

The Anti-Bias Approach. Contributions to the Theoretical Foundation and Professionalisation of Practice The anti-bias approach, which originated in the USA and was further developed in South Africa for adult education, has also been successfully applied in various fields of practice in Germany since the mid-1990s. The focus of the anti-bias work is on dealing with one's own experiences of discrimination and developing alternative approaches to action against discrimination at various levels. The approach opens up the possibility of consciously and responsibly dealing with experiences, privileges, and power. Oliver Trisch's qualitative-empirical study aims to provide a theoretical foundation for the anti-bias approach, paying particular attention to the historical context in Germany. The study is aimed in particular at interested practitioners who are active in anti-discrimination work. On the basis of eight interviews with experts, theoretical foundations are developed, for example on the relationship between theory and practice, on theory-practice transfer or on the central concept of discrimination. In addition, the approach is embedded in the German context, for example along the specific historical challenges of Germany or the demarcation and overlap with other approaches such as human rights education or social justice education. In addition, Trisch addresses questions of professionalisation and quality development and assurance; for example, he critically discusses the concept of competence and develops criteria for the team composition of seminars. Oliver Trisch makes a valuable contribution to the theoretical foundation and professionalisation of one of the richest and most innovative approaches in recent anti-discrimination work.
