Keinem Philosophen der Gegenwart ist es gelungen, so ins öffentliche Bewußtsein einzudringen wie Herbert Marcuse. Seit den späten sechziger Jahren haben seine Schriften weltweit die Neuansätze gesellschaftstheoretischer Diskussion, nicht nur in der studentischen Protestbewegung, erheblich beeinflußt. Die tagespolitisch motivierte Rezeption seines Werkes führte jedoch dazu, daß der bedeutende Philosoph zeitweise hinter dem Moralisten und engagierten Politiker verschwand. Dabei ist dieser ohne jenen nicht wirklich zu verstehen. Es scheint daher heute geboten, an den philosophischen wie lebensgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu erinnern, in dem seine Arbeiten stehen, die seinen Ruhm begründet haben. Mit Freunden, Gegnern und Weggenossen hat Herbert Marcuse immer wieder über Möglichkeiten einer radikalen Veränderung der Gesellschaft nachgedacht und gestritten. Der vorliegende Band versammelt einige dieser Gespräche über Fragen der politischen Philosophie und der Ästhetik, über das Verhältnis von Psychoanalyse und Kritischer Theorie, über die Entwicklungsgeschichte der Linken in Europa und ihre Organisationsprobleme, über die Emanzipation der Frau und die Rolle der Protestbewegung – Gegenstände also, die Marcuses Denken nachdrücklich beschäftigt haben und die in ihrer Diskussionsgeschichte ihrerseits von Marcuses Denken geprägt worden sind.

Richard Haass and Mitchell Reiss, as autonomous diplomats in the George W. Bush State Department, were able to alter US intervention in Northern Ireland and play critical roles in the post-1998 peace process. Their contributions have not been fully appreciated or understood. The restoration of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government in 2007 was made possible by State Department-led intervention in the peace process. There are few references to Northern Ireland in work examining the foreign policy legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. Moreover, the ability to control US foreign policy towards the region brought one of George W. Bush's Northern Ireland special envoys into direct diplomatic conflict with the most senior actors inside the British government. This book will uncover the extent of this fall-out and provide original accounts on how diplomatic relations between these old allies became so fraught.

The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. Murky waters challenges the refined image of spa towns in eighteenth-century Britain by unveiling darker and more ambivalent contemporary representations. It reasserts the centrality of health in British spas by looking at disease, the representation of treatment and the social networks of care woven into spa towns. The book explores the great variety of medical and literary discourses on the numerous British spas in the long eighteenth century and offers a rare look at spas beyond Bath. Following the thread of 'murkiness', it explores the underwater culture of spas, from the gender fluidity of users to the local and national political dimensions, as well as the financial risks taken by gamblers and investors. It thus brings a fresh look at mineral waters and a pinch of salt to health-related discourses.
