        Manchester minds

        A university history of ideas

        by Stuart Jones

        A bicentennial celebration of brilliant thinkers from The University of Manchester's history. The year 2024 marks two centuries since the establishment of The University of Manchester in its earliest form. The first of England's civic universities, Manchester has been home and host to a huge number of influential thinkers and generated world-changing ideas. This book presents a rich account of the remarkable contribution that people associated with The University of Manchester have made to human knowledge. A who's who of Manchester greats, it presents fascinating snapshots of pioneering artists, scholars and scientists, from the poet and activist Eva Gore-Booth to the economist Arthur Lewis, the computer scientist Alan Turing and the physicist Brian Cox.

        History matters

        Patriarchy and the challenge of Feminism

        by Judith Bennett

        Written for everyone interested in women's and gender history, History matters reaffirms the importance to feminist theory and activism of long-term historical perspectives. Judith M. Bennett takes as her central problem the growing chasm between feminism and history which, although closely allied in the 1970s, have now moved away from one another. Seeking to narrow this gap, Bennett proposes that feminist historians turn their attention to the intellectual challenges posed by the persistence of patriarchy. She posits a 'patriarchal equilibrium' whereby, despite many changes in women's experiences over past centuries, women's status vis-à-vis men has remained remarkably unchanged. Bennett argues that the theoretical challenge posed by this 'patriarchal equilibrium' will be best met by long-term historical perspectives that reach back well before the modern era. A new manifesto, History matters engages forthrightly with the challenges faced by feminist historians today. It argues for the radical potential of a history that is focused on feminist issues, aware of the distant past, attentive to continuities over time, and alert to the workings of patriarchal power. ;

        Die Sterne von Paris

        Ein Roman der kulinarischen Abenteuer

        by Idwal Jones, Andrea Fischer, Anthony Bourdain

        Die Geschichte eines jungen Mannes, der nach Paris kommt und dort leben, lieben und kochen lernt – nur nicht in dieser Reihenfolge. Eigentlich will Jean-Marie zur See fahren. Aber dann improvisiert er für eine englische Baronin eine Mahlzeit. Und die trägt ihm eine Empfehlung an ein altehrwürdiges 3-Sterne-Restaurant in Paris ein. Dort tafeln Aristokratinnen und Anarchisten, große und kleine Ganoven, Mätressen und Maharadschas. Noch interessanter geht es aber in der Küche zu – hier begegnet Jean-Marie der wahren Liebe seines Lebens. Folgen Sie Idwal Jones ins Paris der 30er Jahre, köstlich und leicht wie ein Soufflé, lebensklug und witzig wie ein Tischnachbar im Paradies. »Ein bezaubernder Roman über die wirklich wichtigen Dinge im Leben: Liebe, Freunde, Schokolade.« Denis Scheck

        Neurowissenschaft und Philosophie

        Gehirn, Geist und Sprache

        by Maxwell Bennett, Daniel C. Dennett, Peter Hacker, John R. Searle, Joachim Schulte, Daniel Robinson

        Als der Neurowissenschaftler Maxwell Bennett und der Philosoph Peter Hacker den Klassiker Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience veröffentlichten, war dies die erste systematische Untersuchung der begrifflichen Grundlagen der Neurowissenschaften und der Startschuss für den bis heute intensiv geführten Kampf um die Deutungsmacht über den menschlichen Geist. Besonders kritisch fiel seinerzeit die Auseinandersetzung mit den einflussreichen Arbeiten von Daniel Dennett und John Searle aus – also mit jenen beiden Denkern, die von der neurowissenschaftlichen Seite gerne als philosophische Gewährsmänner herangezogen werden. In Neurowissenschaft und Philosophie diskutieren die vier kongenialen »Streithähne« miteinander.

        Court and civic society in the Burgundian Low Countries c.1420–1530

        by Andrew Brown, Graeme Small

        This volume is the first ever attempt to unite and translate some of the key texts which informed Johan Huizinga's famous study of the Burgundian court, The Waning of the Middle Ages, a work which has never gone out of print. It combines these texts with sources that Huizinga did not consider, those that illuminate the wider civic world that the Burgundian court inhabited and the dynamic interaction between court and city. Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. Covering subjects including ceremonial events, such as the spectacles and gargantuan banquets that made the Burgundian dukes the talk of Europe, the workings of the court, and jousting, archery and rhetoric competitions, the book will appeal to students of late medieval and early modern Europe and to those with wider interests in court culture, ritual and ceremony.

        by Catherine R Coates, Alan Jones, Michael W Coates

        Roosevelt's peacetime administrations, 1933–41

        A documentary history

        by G. Bennett, Harry Bennett

        Over a half-century after the death of Roosevelt the debate on his presidency and the New Deal remains vibrant, for in many ways he created the modern presidency and he remains a giant of American political history. This book, specifically designed for sixth-form and undergraduate use, serves as an essential introduction to his domestic policy during his tenure from the struggles of the Depression to the outbreak of the Second World War. Incorporating archival discoveries at the Roosevelt Presidential Library, this documentary collection focuses on the debates and controversies surrounding the implementation and practice of New Deal policies. It highlights the meanings, flaws and outcomes of Roosevelt's attempts to refashion American society. With an extensive contextualising introduction, the book reproduces extracts from a variety of sources including Government records, public addresses and speeches and the private papers of Roosevelt and some of his closest associates. ;

        Transmodern

        An art history of contact, 1920–60

        by Christian Kravagna, Marsha Meskimmon, Amelia Jones,

        How can we reconfigure our picture of modern art after the postcolonial turn without simply adding regional art histories to the Eurocentric canon? Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.
