Practicing shame investigates how the literature of medieval England encouraged women to safeguard their honour by cultivating hypervigilance against the possibility of sexual shame. A combination of inward reflection and outward comportment, this practice of 'shamefastness' was believed to reinforce women's chastity of mind and body, and to communicate that chastity to others by means of conventional gestures. The book uncovers the paradoxes and complications that emerged from these emotional practices, as well as the ways in which they were satirised and reappropriated by male authors. Working at the intersection of literary studies, gender studies and the history of emotions, it transforms our understanding of the ethical construction of femininity in the past and provides a new framework for thinking about honourable womanhood now and in the years to come.

Ottilie von Pogwisch, 1796 in Danzig als Tochter eines preußischen Majors geboren, heiratete 1817 Goethes Sohn August. Die anfangs glückliche Ehe, aus der drei Kinder hervorgingen, wurde bald durch die Unvereinbarkeit der Partner und Ottilies hochgespannte Erwartungen an den Charakter des Dichtersohnes getrübt. Ihr herzliches Verhältnis zum verehrten Schwiegervater, verbunden mit großer Fürsorge und einer lebhaften Geselligkeit, blieb auch nach dem Tod ihres Mannes bestehen. Goethes Testament sicherte ihr freie Wohnung und jährlichen Unterhalt zu. In späteren Jahren versuchte sie, an frühere leidenschaftliche Beziehungen wieder anzuknüpfen und erlebte zahlreiche Enttäuschungen. 1872 starb sie vereinsamt in Weimar.Ruth Rahmeyers Biographie, die auf umfassendem und gründlichem Quellenstudium beruht, erscheint hier in einer erweiterten und durch neue Forschungen aktualisierten Neuausgabe.

Im Mai 1946 werden der aus Schlesien 1932 nach Palästina eingewanderte Veterinärmediziner Hans Kipnis und seine aus Warschau stammende Frau Ruth zu einem Ball im Palast des Britischen Hochkommissars für Palästina eingeladen. Beide nehmen die Einladung zu dem Fest auf dem Berg des bösen Rates an, und im Verlaufe des Abends treffen beide eine existentielle Entscheidung - eine Entscheidung, die Ausdruck ihrer Elinstellung zu der sich abzeichnenden Gründung des Staates Israel ist. In dieser vielstimmigen, nach dem klassischen Muster der Novelle komponierten Erzählung ruft Amos Oz die unterschiedlichen Erwartungen der europäischen Einwanderer in Palästina vor der Gründung des Staates Israel in Erinnerung.

Amos Oz war Mitbegründer und herausragender Vertreter der seit 1977 bestehenden Friedensbewegung Schalom achschaw (Peace now) und befürwortete eine Zwei-Staaten-Bildung im israelisch-palästinensichen Konflikt. Sein Werk wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels 1992, dem Goethe-Preis der Stadt Frankfurt am Main 2005 und dem Siegfried Lenz Preis 2014. Sein bekanntestes Werk Eine Geschichte von Liebe und Finsternis wurde in alle Weltsprachen übersetzt und 2016 als Film adaptiert. This book opens the doors to the homes of the forgotten poor and traces the goods they owned before, during and after the industrial revolution (c. 1650-1850). Using a vast and diverse range of sources, it gets to the very heart of what it meant to be 'poor' by examining the homes of the impoverished and mapping how numerous household goods became more widespread. As the book argues, poverty did not necessarily equate to owning very little and living in squalor. In fact, its novel findings show that most of the poor strove to improve their domestic spheres and that their demand for goods was so great that it was a driving force of the industrial revolution.
