Althusser brach mit dem ökonomischen Determinismus seiner Zeit und analysierte kapitalistische Herrschaft als ein Verhältnis, in das auch die Unterdrückten verstrickt sind. Seine Gedanken zur Überdeterminierung, sowie spätere zur »Anrufung« des Subjekts, zu den »Ideologischen Staatsapparaten« und zur Philosophie als »Klassenkampf in der Theorie« sind unter anderem von Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, Chantal Mouffe und Antonio Negri aufgegriffen und fortgeführt worden. Sämtliche Beiträge der französischen Ausgabe sind hier erstmals gesammelt auf deutsch, in durchgesehenen und teilweise neuen Übersetzungen verfügbar, versehen mit einem ausführlichen Nachwort. Louis Althusser (1918-1990) war einer der einflussreichsten marxistischen Theoretiker des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er war Lehrer von Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Nicos Poulantzas, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Jacques Rancière und Étienne Balibar.

        n 1715 Leibniz wrote to his friend the Princess of Wales to warn her of the dangers Newton's philosophy posed for natural religion. Seizing this chance of initiating an exchange between the two greatest minds in Europe, the princess showed his letter to the eminent Newtonian scientist and natural theologian, Samuel Clarke. From his reply developed an exchange of papers which was published in 1717. The correspondence was immediately seen as a crucial discussion of the significance of the new science, and it became one of the most widely read philosophical works of its time.In this edition, an introduction outlines the historical background, and there is a valuable survey of the subsequent discussions of the problem of space and time in the philosophy of science. Significant references to the controversy in Leibniz's other correspondence have also been collected, and the relevant passages from Newton's Principia and Opticks are appended.         Works of travel have been the subject of increasingly sophisticated studies in recent years. This book undermines the conviction with which nineteenth-century British writers talked about darkest Africa. It places the works of travel within the rapidly developing dynamic of Victorian imperialism. Images of Abyssinia and the means of communicating those images changed in response to social developments in Britain. As bourgeois values became increasingly important in the nineteenth century and technology advanced, the distance between the consumer and the product were justified by the scorn of African ways of eating. The book argues that the ambiguities and ambivalence of the travellers are revealed in their relation to a range of objects and commodities mentioned in narratives. For instance, beads occupy the dual role of currency and commodity. The book deals with Henry Morton Stanley's expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, and attempts to prove that racial representations are in large part determined by the cultural conditions of the traveller's society. By looking at Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, it argues that the text is best read as what it purports to be: a kind of travel narrative. Only when it is seen as such and is regarded in the context of the fin de siecle can one begin to appreciate both the extent and the limitations of Conrad's innovativeness.

        Richard Haass and Mitchell Reiss, as autonomous diplomats in the George W. Bush State Department, were able to alter US intervention in Northern Ireland and play critical roles in the post-1998 peace process. Their contributions have not been fully appreciated or understood. The restoration of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government in 2007 was made possible by State Department-led intervention in the peace process. There are few references to Northern Ireland in work examining the foreign policy legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. Moreover, the ability to control US foreign policy towards the region brought one of George W. Bush's Northern Ireland special envoys into direct diplomatic conflict with the most senior actors inside the British government. This book will uncover the extent of this fall-out and provide original accounts on how diplomatic relations between these old allies became so fraught.
