Miñan, by Ibrahima Balde and Amets Arzallus (Full English text available) Ibrahima is a teenager from a village in Guinea without much expectations. He left the village to go with his father to the capital city, where they sell shoes in a street corner. At the sudden death of his father, he becomes the head of the family and learns various professions, always alone and away from home, although his dream is to be a truck driver in his country. When his little brother Alhassane leaves school to flee to Europe, Ibrahima is shocked and leaves everything behind to try to find Alhassane and convince him to go back to their village and continue his education. Ibrahima risks his life many times to reach Algeria and find Alhassane to convince him to return home. After many penalties, he learns that Alhassane has died in a shipwreck. Ibrahima feels guilty for not having managed to find him and convince him to continue studying. In the end, Ibrahima raises money for the trip to Spain in a zodiac that is about to capsize, but they are rescued. Miñan was originally published in Basque . It is now on its fourth reprint in Basque language. The book (152 pages in the original Basque edition) is written in four hands between its protagonist Ibrahima, a migrant from the Republic of Guinea who crossed the desert and the borders of the EU to look for his brother, and Amets Arzallus. In fact, Ibrahima is illiterate and that is why at the beginning of the book it says that "This book has been written by Ibrahima with the voice and by Amets with the hand." [The two brothers don't call each other by names; they use a common name: Alhassane calls him koto, ‘older brother’ in their language, and Ibrahima calls him miñan, ‘little brother’; hence the title]. Miñán has the thrill of a road-movie: each stage that the protagonist covers takes us to another world, with different customs, other people, other languages, another landscape, other currencies, and above all, a new challenge to overcome. Also with a new aberration, because Ibrahima’s epic journey is a succession of tragedies, but friendship, generosity of strangers and the courage to move forward against all odds are never lacking. His story never falls into the melodrama, sometimes humor even sneaks in. Ibrahima's goal (to rescue his brother from a dream that might go wrong) is as universal as the feeling of guilt and tears he shares with the reader. But he tells it without bragging, relying on the roundness of the facts, and with a look of an overwhelming humanity.

From the Hebrew name meaning “Who Is Like God?”, Michael is one of the angels–together with Raphael (“God Heals”) and Gabriel (“God Is My Strength”)–whose names are mentioned in the Holy Scripture. Since the first centuries of Christianity, there has been a wide diffusion of his worship in Europe and in the East through a multitude of sanctuaries and chapels, mostly nestled in high places, related to caves and water. An astonishing feature of this spread is a mysterious straight line crossing the European continent from North-West to South-East from Ireland to Asia Minor, and it is perfectly aligned with the sunset on the day of Summer Solstice. Along this line are seven sanctuaries dedicated to Michael, three of which have been significantly important over the centuries: Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, the Sacra di San Michele in val di Susa and the Sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo on Mount Gargano, in Puglia. Three extraordinary high places that are all the same distance one from the other and which have always been a constant pilgrimage destination. Another aspect is the connection Saint Michael had with the Longobards, who migrated across Europe between the second and the sixth century until they reached Italy where they settled. This made Michael the first truly “European” Saint, attracting believers from all over the continent. With the contribution of some of the most important historians and medievalists from different European countries, this book depicts the presence of Saint Michael in Europe, starting with the diffusion of his devotion, especially during the Middle Ages, and extending to an analysis of the iconography of the Saint through the many architectural and artistic testimonies to be found throughout Europe. Researchers, policymakers, sociologists and doctors have long asked how to best measure the health of a nation, yet the challenge persists. The nonprofit State of the USA, Inc. (SUSA) is taking on this challenge, demonstrating how to measure the health of the United States. The organization is developing a new website intended to provide reliable and objective facts about the U.S. in a number of key areas, including health, and to provide an interactive tool with which individuals can track the progress made in each of these areas. In 2008, SUSA asked the Institute of Medicine's Committee on the State of the USA Health Indicators to provide guidance on 20 key indicators to be used on the organization's website that would be valuable in assessing health. Each indicator was required to demonstrate: a clear importance to health or health care, the availability of reliable, high quality data to measure change in the indicators over time, the potential to be measured with federally collected data, and the capability to be broken down by geography, populations subgroups including race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Taken together, the selected indicators reflect the overall health of the nation and the efficiency and efficacy of U.S. health systems.
