        A Letter to Layla

Travels to Our Deep Past and Near Future

        by Ramona Koval

How might the origins of our species inform the way we think about our planet? At a point of unparalleled crisis, can human ingenuity save us from ourselves?   Much-loved writer Ramona Koval travels the globe in a quest for answers, and encounters the unexpected. She talks to an eminent paleo-archaeologist about a two-million-year-old skull in the Republic of Georgia, meets the next generation of robots in Berlin, attends a festival against death in California and explores an ice-age cave in southern France, speaking with the world’s leading authority on cave art.   Between these and other adventures she returns to her ever-engaging granddaughter Layla, whose development in infancy spurs Koval to find out what makes us human, what separates us from the other apes. Full of revealing exchanges with scientists and writers whose knowledge of the past and visions for the future could hold the key to our next evolution, A Letter to Layla will surprise and delight in equal measure.

      • The Arts

        Milano e La Scala

        (1778 - 1920) Nascita dell'industria lirica

        by Antonio Schilirò

Nineteenth-century musical Italy is, according to Bruno Barilli's famous definition, 'the country of melodrama', and the theatre is its space par excellence, and La Scala favoured the establishment of Milan as the capital of the opera industry. This requires an articulate and complex organisation that, in addition to the artists, includes agents, impresarios and technical personnel in the sector and enables the 'turnkey' transfer of Italian opera performances to the other side of the planet. And in Milan, the Teatro alla Scala was built with the intention of being the centre of this production system. The theatre, inaugurated in 1778, was built thanks to the obstinate, tenacious and passionate determination of the most illustrious families of the Lombard aristocracy, after a fire had destroyed the Regio Ducal Teatro on the night of 25 February 1776. It was the nobles who entirely financed the construction of the new Teatro Grande at La Scala, receiving in exchange a box with an adjoining dressing room.

Decoding the Socio‐Economic Approach to Management

Results of the Second SEAM Conference in the United States

by Conbere, John; Savall, Henri; Heorhiadi, Alla

In May 2014, the French research laboratory ISEOR (Socio?Economic Institute for Firms and Organizations) and the University of St. Thomas co?sponsored a second conference on the application of the Socio?Economic Approach to Management (SEAM) paradigm and methodology in the United States. SEAM is a scientific approach to consultancy that focuses on uncovering the dysfunctions and hidden costs that exist in organizations, “hidden” in the sense that they are not captured by traditional accounting methods and financial analyses. Through intervention that encompasses the entire organization – what the ISEOR team refers to as the HORIVERT approach (combining horizontal and vertical intervention) – the underlying goal is to enhance organizational performance by attacking the “TFW virus,” a vestige of the early work by Frederick Taylor, Henri Fayol, and Max Weber that has sufficiently infiltrated our thinking about management and organization to the point where are falling well short of our own potential. The resultant dysfunctions this virus unleashes creates hidden costs that readily destroy a firm’s value?added possibilities. The volume captures the ideas, applications, and exchanges of that meeting, attempting to bring the reader into the conference itself. Chapters include the contributors’ presentations (“Chapter Prologue: Conference Remarks”), revised conference papers, and the question and answer dialogue for the session.

        Vivo fino alla morte

        seguito da Frammenti

        by Paul Ricoeur

      • L'ONDA PERFETTA

        Scegli di essere felice

        by Sergio Bambaren
