The Story of the Good King Alexander the Great

Ein Ritterroman über Alexander den Großen

        by Angelica Rieger

No figure in ancient history gave rise to so many mythical fantasies as Alexander the Great (356-323 BC). Soon after his mysterious death, legends about his adventurous life started to flourish with a rich production of codexes, the most valuable of which were beautifully illustrated by miniatures. The sumptuous manuscript that is covered in this volume contains a version of the story in prose of ‘the Good King Alexander’ – the ‘Ystoire du Bon Roi Alexandre’ in ancient French. It was acquired by the Hamilton Collection in 1882 and is currently kept in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Preussischer Kulturbesitz, under the marking 78 C 1.

        Bald Facts, The

        The Autobiography of David Armstrong

        by Pat Symes

Like many gifted footballers of the seventies and eighties, the story told by legendary Middlesbrough, Southampton and England winger David Armstrong includes some spectacular ups and downs; but the speed and ferocity of his personal rollercoaster ride are surely unique. Starting out at Leeds, David resisted signing for Don Revie - later followed by Clough's Forest and Manchester United. He played an incredible 356 consecutive matches for Middlesbrough before being forced out after ten years. On to Saints with Keegan, Ball and Channon - and more near misses in the league and cup. Armstrong's promising England career was sadly curtailed by a falling-out with Bobby Robson - and just four years later he was forced to sign on the dole. The break-up of his first marriage, his desperate desire for an ankle amputation and bailiffs at the door lend David's riches-to-rags story of stardom and poverty a human appeal far beyond football.

        Cranswick on Porsche

A modern interpretation of the Porsche story

        by Marc Cranswick

Before yesterday's dream car became today's SUV, the reputation of Porsche as a manufacturer of fine sports cars was established. It started with the ideas of Dr Ferdinand Porsche, and a world best seller that spawned a revered line of sports cars. The Porsche 356 and 911 dominated their classes in international racing, leading to more specialized designs that brought glory to the marque, most famously at Le Mans. Porsche's success was based on excellent engineering. The firm's design consultancy has brought automotive innovation. Such excellence has been centered upon Weissach, the go to place for companies needing a high tech helping hand. Commercial achievement is based on image too. Here, Porsche has carefully chosen its models, and the way they have been sold and promoted. The result, is a unique position in public perception and media coverage. Even during the golden air-cooled era, Porsche wasn't afraid to experiment. The Square Porsche and front-engined coupés, all courted controversy. However, Zuffenhausen believed a Porsche was a Porsche, and soon others did too. The company's tremendous influence in design and engineering has even inspired artistic creation. Like the cars, these artworks represent an inseparable combination of style and substance.

      • Terrorism for Self Glorification

        The Herostratos Syndrome

        by Albert Borowitz (author)

Examines the motives of terrorists, from ancient Greece to the present day“A unique work of. . . history, made all the more interesting by its relevance to the time in which we live.” —James R. Elkins, editor of Legal Studies ForumIn this timely study of the roots of terrorism, author Albert Borowitz deftly assesses the phenomenon of violent crime motivated by a craving for notoriety or self-glorification. He traces this particular brand of terrorism back to 356 BCE and the destruction of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus by arsonist Herostratos and then examines similar crimes through history to the present time, detailing many examples of what the author calls the “Herostratos Syndrome,” such as the attempted explosion of the Greenwich Observatory in 1894, the Taliban’s destruction of the giant Buddhas in Afghanistan, the assassination of John Lennon, the Unabomber strikes, and the attacks on the World Trade Center buildings. The study of terrorism requires interdisciplinary inquiry. Proving that terrorism cannot be the exclusive focus of a single field of scholarship, Borowitz presents this complex subject using sources based in religion, philosophy, history, Greek mythology, and world literature, including works of Chaucer, Cervantes, Mark Twain, and Jean-Paul Sartre.Terrorism for Self-Glorification, written in clear and direct prose, is original, thorough, and thought provoking. Scholars, specialists, and general readers will find their understanding of terrorism greatly enhanced by this book.

        Ode to the White Witch

        a book of odes

        by Martha Cinader

Odes that any mother or anyone who ever loved their mother can appreciate. Inspired by the odes of Pablo Neruda, and an expansive appreciation for the blessings of every day life, they are in many ways universal, but Cinader does not shy away from addressing the experience of the white woman. Lavishing her with both honest criticism and love, the odes as a whole raise a distinct voice to join the milieu of feminists without any equivocation.    Cinader's style has been shaped by her live performance experience, resulting in a direct and sometimes distinctly narrative approach. The odes were all written during a period of about nine years while the author was publishing a weekly arts newspaper and hosting a weekly open mic in the California bay area. Many of them were previously published as the "Poem of the Day" in Listen & Be Heard Weekly.    A 77 page manuscript, about 4500 words. For a list of titles and further information, please see the supporting document.

Numerical Methods and Models in Earth Science

        by Parthasarathi Ghosh

"Understanding earth systems and its dynamic behavior requires objective insights into the complex observational data sets and their interrelationships. Drawing meaningful inferences from such data is not always an easy task as the deterministic relationships between various geological variables often remain obscured. These interrelationships need to be determined empirically through the analysis of a large set of data and validated through numerical simulations. The ever widening horizon of techniques of numerical analysis and simulation now provides a good number of tools to aid the interpretation. However, due to the inherent complexity of earth science data, expert supervision is required at all stages of analysis from collection to dissemination. This ensures that the most appropriate methodology is adopted and the results remain consistent with the geological principles. Discussions on these practical issues often lie beyond the scope of textbooks and this is precisely where this book is placed. In this book eminent geoscientists present their experiences in analyzing and managing earth science data as well as in designing numerical models to simulate earth processes. Apart from giving a discourse of their own approach towards a particular research problem they also discuss at length the relative merits of alternative methodologies. These seven authoritative articles, richly illustrated, will be a valuable resource for research students and professionals interested in research and teaching in various branches of earth science like, tectonics, GPS geodesy, sedimentology, geographical information science, and evolutionary biology."

        New Clinical Genetics 3rd edition

        by Andrew Read, Dian Donnai

New Clinical Genetics continues to offer the most innovative case-based approach to modern genetics. It is used worldwide as a textbook for medical students, but also as an essential guide to the field for genetic counselors, physician assistants, and clinical and nurse geneticists.   In the few years since the previous edition technical progress, especially the widespread use of whole-genome technologies, has brought many advances in the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease. As a result, most chapters have been substantially rewritten and updated to reflect this. The unique structure and format remains the same, but significant new material has been added to cover: the widespread use of next-generation sequencing as a routine diagnostic tool the checking of a patient’s whole exome for the cause of their problem noninvasive prenatal diagnosis by next-generation sequencing of free fetal DNA in the maternal circulation a new integrated treatment of epigenetics mosaicism, ‘RASopathies’ and disorders of the spliceosome are described in new Disease boxes dysmorphology in more detail

        Fanni and the Tangled Twins

        Constructive Arguing

by Authors: Julia Pöyhönen & Heidi Livingston Illustrator: Linnea Bellamine Publisher: Kumma-kustannus

Lately, the black swan siblings Lilli and Lenni have started bickering about almost everything. When Lilli, in her anger, messes up Lenni’s counting of acorns, pecking and hurtful words are not spared. Instantly, a fight breaks out! Will the siblings find a way to mitigate anger and resolve the quarrel? It is difficult to be constructive when we are angry because anger incites us to attack -whether it is with malicious words or physical aggression. It is difficult to be emphatic andsee things from the other person’s perspective before regulating yourself. Through this story and the exercises, children understand that everyone sometimes needs space in order to be able to control your words and actions. Children learn important skills for constructive arguing: expressing your feelings and needs, emotion regulation, and apologizing. The Fanni series includes six books and a deck of Feeling’s Cards. Each book includes an illustrated story, practical theoretical information for parents, teachers, and caregivers, and exercises for children and adults. Each Fanni book is written so that just by listening to the story, children learn one specific emotional processing skill that they can start using right away. The series is targeted for 4-7-year olds.
