        Burnout and Chronic Occupational Stress

A Guide for Those Affected and Their Relatives

        by Andreas Hillert/Stefan Koch/Dirk Lehr

In today’s work environment, which is dominated by high pressure, many professionals are experiencing chronic stress, some even "burn out". This guide provides information about the connection between occupational stress and burnout. It presents scientifically sound and proven strategies for counteracting chronic stress.   The model of the “gratification crisis”, which states that an imbalance between professional engagement and the obtained gratifications, e.g. salary and appreciation, leads to persistent stress and an increased risk of physical and mental illness, is the focus of this guide. Based on case studies and concrete instructions, readers are supported in reviewing their own situation.   The guide goes on to present coping strategies, e.g. how important decisions can be made in high stress situations, how to avoid vague assessments, how to strengthen the ability to distance oneself after work, and how to improve quality of leisure time. This title can be used as a stand-alone guide as well as supplemental material to coaching or therapy.   Target Group: psychotherapists, specialists for psychiatry and psychotherapy, specialists for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, clinical and health psychologists, occupational and organizational psychologist, rehabilitation psychologist, coaches, students and teachers of psychology, supervisors

Inquiry Based Stress Reduction (IBSR) in Practice - How to Use “the Work” of Byron Katie in Psychotherapy and Coaching.

        Manual for Clinical Practice

by Marie Odiel van Rhijn, Esther Leuning

Inquiry Based Stress Reduction is the name of the method which was developed by Byron Katie as ‘the Work’. Byron Katie is the author of very well-known self-help books. However, until now there was no manual available which explains the application of this method and the methodological and scientific evidence which can be given to support it. This book provides a comprehensive and exhaustive overview of how the method can be used by therapists in psychotherapeutic settings in mental health care, business coaches and coaches in other fields of life. As well as providing an extremely precise description of the working method for each step of the protocol, all these steps are clarified by means of practical examples and case studies. Target Group: psychologists, therapists and coaches.

        Stress-Resilient Crops

        Coordinated omics-CRISPR-nanotechnology strategies

        by Jen-Tsung Chen

Climate change and the increase in environmental stress that it causes has made the need for more stress-tolerant crops to be developed worldwide. This book presents cutting-edge coordinated "omics-CRISPR-nanotechnology" strategies for combating diverse stressors and complicated or multiple stress conditions experienced by crops today. It covers both abiotic and biotic stresses including salinity, temperature, drought, heavy metals, pests and pathogens, and proposes ways to develop stress-tolerant crops with high-yield and high-quality traits through the integration or coordination of three mainstream technologies (multiple omics, CRISPR/Cas9, and nanotechnology). This book is a valuable reference and guide to crucial aspects of methods, applications, and future directions and it opens the door for students and researchers to efficiently view these critical subtopics of plant science and technology and inspire ideas for future experiments. These techniques will help create a more sustainable agriculture in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and the Paris Agreement. The book: · Presents strategies for coordinating multiple omics, CRISPR/Cas9, and nanotechnology techniques for crop improvement · Describes ways to develop abiotic and biotic stress-tolerant crops · Summarizes current achievements in developing climate-smart agriculture

        Rural SME Business Management

        The Human Factor

        by Peter L Nuthall

This book is about managerial ability and how it might be assessed and improved, and it focuses on rural Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Traditionally, business studies have seldom covered the manager as a person and a decision maker in any great depth. Personnel management, production economics, financing, operations analysis techniques, etc. tend to be emphasized but the personal attributes of the decision makers have as much influence on success as the rules of good decision making. This book aims to correct this imbalance. The human characteristics of managers that define how a manager operates are explored, as are their impact on managerial ability. The details of the competencies a manager must possess are also presented and discussed as well as potential detracting biases. The book concludes with methods and techniques covering personal characteristic changes and associated managerial improvement. The concepts and conclusions of this book are all based on a body of research, excerpts of which are quoted in the text, drawn from the rich sources available in the international literature. Case studies describing successful managers and management advisors are used throughout. · First book which specifically focuses on human factors and decision making for SME managers. · Introduces new research specifically on the quantification of intuition, the primary decision making method used in SMEs. · Contains essential material required by researchers of decision making processes, business studies teachers, and extension workers from the world of SME business.

At the Very Bottom of the System

How migrant workers ensure prosperity for us

        by Sascha Lübbe

The author reveals structural problems and offers solutions – an urgently necessary book, not least with a view to the acute shortage of skilled workers 450,000 migrant workers toll on German construction sites, work in sometimes inhumane conditions in meat factories or as truck drivers, and let’s not forget the hordes of cleaners in German hotels and companies. They are systematically exploited and cheated out of their wages. Sascha Lübbe exposes the octopus-like network of partly criminal companies in a shadowy world where the boundary between the legal and the illegal is blurred. In his evocative book with interviews with those aff ected, he reveals how a parallel system has established itself in the German working world, but also how those affected resist.

        Red Line

by Samar Mahfouz BarrajIllustrated By: Mona Yakzan and Mira El-Myr

Mazen, a young boy, is one day surprised by their neighbor Bassam shouting with anger in the street “My parking spot is a red line!” Does this mean he plans to paint the street red, asks Mazen to his mother? The mother explains to Mazen that what Bassam means is simply that no one is to park in his place. The notion is still vague to Mazen: Why red? Does it have anything to do with red traffic lights? The mother tries again “When something is a red line, it means that it is off limits to others”. In this illustrated album, Samar Barraj boldly addresses the delicate issue of child sexual abuse. Acknowledging the complexity of the boundary it tackles, the book determines it through examples the mother and child raise in their conversation. Mazen’s spontaneous remarks and comments point out the difficulty of defining this red line, and make of the book a realistic example of such a conversation. The illustrations develop the notion further, by representing situations in which the red line might be crossed – one may be on his bicycle, at his computer, or approached by a respectable-looking old man in the street. The body parts are not named, but are represented in a naïve drawing Mazen made, though the text insists on the importance of preserving the body as a whole. The colorful images and constant presence of the mother and parents make of the book a reassuring experience despite the gravity of the topic.

        Working–class suburb

Social change on an English council estate, 1930–2010

        by Mark Clapson

        Not all council estates are the same. A detailed historical account of the birth and social evolution of the Whitley council estate in Reading, Working-Class Suburb challenges many of the more depressing images and cultural stereotypes about council housing in twentieth and twenty-first century England. Key areas covered by the study are housing and politics; community campaigns; women and the corporate life of council estates; the uses of leisure; the relationships between tenants, residents and the local authority, and continuities in working-class life despite economic, demographic and political change. The book will be of interest to anyone studying urban history and social history, to professionals working in the fields of housing policy and housing studies, and to the growing number of academics interested in suburban studies. ;

The British working class in postwar film

        by Philip Gillett

An incidental pleasure of watching a film is what it tells us about the society in which it is made. Using a sociological model, The British working class in postwar film looks at how working-class people were portrayed in British feature films in the decade after the Second World War. Though some of the films examined are well known, others have been forgotten and deserve reassessment. Original statistical data is used to assess the popularity of the films with audiences. With its interdisciplinary approach and the avoidance of jargon, this book seeks to broaden the approach to film studies. Students of media and cultural studies are introduced to the skills of other disciplines, while sociologists and historians are encouraged to consider the value of film evidence in their own fields. This work should appeal to all readers interested in social history and in how cinema and society works.

Klar, dass Mama Ole lieber hat / Klar, dass Mama Anna lieber hat

        by Kirsten Boie, Silke Brix

History of the Chinese Communist Party's Mass Line Thought

        by LUO Pinghan

This Book systematically explores the formation and development of the mass line thought of the Chinese Communist Party, and analyzes its mass viewpoint under different historical conditions, including: (1) Formation and theoretical generalization of the mass line thought. For the first time, the Communist Party of China realized the transformation of the revolutionary subject from the elite to the masses. (2) Continuations and setbacks of the mass line thought. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the general implementation of democratic centralism in national institutions and organizations, and the establishment of political consultation system and the system of people's congress fully reflect the application of the Party's mass line in the establishment of specific systems. (3) Restoration and innovation of the mass line thought. Since the Reform and Opening-up, the Party has restored the fine tradition of the mass line. DENG Xiaoping's theory of "People's Support", "People's Approval", "People's Delightfulness" and "People's Agreement", JIANG Zemin's "Three Represents", and HU Jintao's theory that "The government must function by the mandate of the people, empathize with the feelings of the people, and work for the well-being of the people" all reflect the innovation of the Party's mass line in the new century."
