        One Small Spark

        by Andy Woodage

In the footsteps of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series comes Andy Woodage's debut novel and our entrance into his bio-engineered fantasy world. The After-Time Chronicles: One Small Spark is a young-adult fantasy novel of good, evil, genetically engineered creatures, romance, blood, and the search for belonging. Imagine a world without oil, where metals are only available if they can be salvaged or recycled. Imagine if coal was running out. It’s a world where armies no longer build metal monsters, but biological horrors. A world where genetic engineering has become the art of war. This is 12-year-old Jothan’s world. Orphaned by a terrible accident, he dreams of leaving his uneventful life with his grandparents on the family’s griffin farm. However, when a catastrophic attack wipes out every homestead in The Zoological Zone, his world is turned upside down. He finds himself thrust into a story larger than he ever dreamed, embarking on a rough journey with a mysteriously appearing warrior to the fabled ‘Temple of Elohim’. Accompanied by his best friend, the griffin Gozell, Jothan sets off across a land ravaged by poverty and wild creatures. Battling his way across the dangerous landscape, his eyes are opened to an empire in the grip of war and unrest... with the ever increasing weight of his role in events to come. Will they make it to the Temple? Will they be welcomed when they arrive? Can Jothan unravel the secrets that seem to control the lives of everyone he meets, including his mysterious saviour?

        Capitalocene

Serengeti, Scozia, Norvegia, Miami, Tokyo, Lavezzi

        by Silvio Valpreda

Coined by English historian Jason W. Moore in 2016, ‘Capitalocene’ might seem a strange word, even though it relates to something very close to all of us: it is the new age that we live in, where it’s not the mankind that affects the world (as according to the anthropocentrism) but the mankind that is affected by the capital.A writer, artist and former companies executive, Silvio Valpreda connects visual language and storytelling, geography and intuition, infographic and artistic intervention in order to investigate our new world of great changes. He takes us amongst lions and poachers in the Serengeti Plain, churches and sheep in Scotland, electric cars and oil wells in Norway, garbage cans and swimming pools in Miami, until we reach the inhabited island of Lavezzi, only to discover that the capital left its mark there as well.

        Graveyard Grapevine

        by Kim Ekemar

Not everything is what it seems – a tombstone doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a person’s life. The remarkable short stories included in this book narrate eleven extraordinary cases with the common theme that life challenges death. So, prepare yourself for the meeting with a Tibetan monk as he contemplates his way out of a Chinese prison, a Mexican mythomaniac’s idea of true beauty, and the secret caller of a Russian Duchess. You will encounter a ruthless German concentration camp commander, a shipwreck survivor in the Indian Ocean, and a spy novel writer with emerald eyes. You will be shown how too much luck can become a strikingly sad experience, how the prospect of taxes can be more aggravating than the knowledge of looming death, and that orchestrating your own demise for a new life is a daunting task indeed. There’s an account of the repeated delays for a man condemned to death because he refuses the humiliation of getting down on his knees yet another time. Most terrifying of these captivating tales is, perhaps, the unique opportunity to listen in on the cut-up confession of a plastic surgeon after his execution.
