Author Biography
Contributors:
For this book, editor Eleanor Abraham has written new material and selected and adapted content written by experienced reference writers Betty Kirkpatrick and Sue Moody, the principal contributors.
Betty Kirkpatrick, an honours graduate of the University of Edinburgh, has a long career in reference publishing. She has edited Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary, Roget’s Thesaurus, the concise edition of Brewer’s Phrase and Fable, and was language consultant to the Encarta World English Dictionary. She has compiled various other reference books, including the Oxford Paperback Thesaurus and the Bloomsbury Dictionary of Clichés. Betty is the author of an extensive list of publications on various aspects of the English language, for all learners of English, and acts as a consultant to the Bloomsbury Good Word Guide.
Sue Moody is an honours graduate the University of St Andrews and has written many learning and teaching materials.
Sue regularly works on a freelance basis for the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority). She has written for a number of websites for organizations such as the National Library of Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and Eneco. Sue has a diploma with distinction for Freelance Feature Writing from the London School of Journalism and a postgraduate certificate in Primary Education (with distinction) from Moray House. She set up Bright Writing in 2004.
Eleanor Abraham is an honours graduate in English Language and Literature from the University of Glasgow. She has been editing, writing for, and project managing an extensive list of reference titles for over twenty years. She has enjoyed working with Betty Kirkpatrick on many titles for Geddes & Grosset in that time, including Better English Grammar, Better English Usage, The Students’ Companion and The Primary Dictionary.
Spelled-out pronunciation guides in this book were transcribed with reference to a system devised by Dr Helen Fraser of the University of Essex, and were adapted by Drs Scott and Bettina Montgomery, graduates in linguistics from the University of Edinburgh.
