        ChildFinders

        by Hugo N. Gerstl

“Melissa, silly little goat, Melissa sta—” Charles Flanders Cunningham III — a name that will rank with Hannibal Lecter as the ultimate evil genius. Charles Flanders Cunningham III — the wealthiest, most influential lawyer in the United States, perhaps the world, trusted counselor to presidents, prime ministers, and world leaders. But Cunningham has a dark side, a very dark side known only to himself and his five accomplices. Cunningham arranges to kidnap children from all over the world, none more than six years old, for a period of two weeks, after which they are returned by a wonderful, charitable organization, ChildFinders, to their despairing parents, safe, secure, and outwardly none the worse for wear … but changed. Changed by chemicals, computer implants, and mind alteration. And they do not know it — until they hear one of a thousand catchphrases. Then they turn into programmed automatons, who will do whatever the next command tells them to do. Afterward, the chip erases all memory of what they have done. By means of this undetectable “army,” Cunningham aims to control the world. Can a team led by Israeli counterterrorist Ezra Caen (Assassin, The Wrecking Crew) stop him before it is too late? In the tradition of The Manchurian Candidate and Telefon, you’d best hold on to your nerves and plan on staying up very, very late to finish this riveting thriller. And be frightened. Be very, very frightened. You never can tell if you will be the next victim … or the next killer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APyyH0hZ488 Published by Pangæa Publishing Group,2020. 300 pages – 23 cm x 15 cm

        WHY I CAN'T WRITE

How to survive in a world where you can’t pay rent, can’t afford to focus, be healthy or to remain principled. Dijana Matković tells a powerful story of searching for a room of her own in the late stages of capitalism.

        by DIJANA MATKOVIĆ

It is a coming-of-age story for Generation Z. How to grow up or even live in a world where no steady jobs are available, you can’t pay your rent and can’t afford medical or living expenses. Moreover, it touches on how to be a socially engaged artist in such a world, and more so, a woman in a post-me too world? Dijana, a daughter of working-class immigrants, tells the story of her difficult childhood and adolescence, how should became a journalist and later a writer in a society full of prejudices, glass ceilings and obstacles. How she gradually became a stereotypical ‘success story’, even though she still struggles with writing, because she can’t afford a ‘room of her own’.   Dijana is a daughter of working-class immigrants, who came to Slovenia in the eighties in search of a better future. The family is building a house but is made redundant from the local factory when Yugoslavia is in the midst of an economic crisis. When her parents get divorced, Dijana, her older sister and mother struggle with basic needs. She is ashamed of their poverty, her classmates bully her because of her immigrant status, but mostly because of her being ‘white trash’. In the local school she meets teachers with prejudices against immigrants, but is helped by a librarian who spots her talent. When Dijana goes to secondary school, she moves in with her older sister who lives in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Her sister is into rave culture and Dijana starts to explore experimenting with drugs, music and dance. At the secondary school, she is again considered ‘the weird kid’, as she isn’t enough of a foreigner for other immigrant kids because she is from the country, yet she isn’t Slovenian enough for other native kids. She falls even deeper into drug addiction, fails the first year of school and has to move back to live with her mother. She takes on odd jobs to make ends meet. Whilst working as a waitress she encounters sexism and sexual violence from customers and abuse from the boss. She finishes night school and graduates. She meets many ‘lost’ people of her generation along the way, who tell her their stories about precarious, minimum wage jobs, lack of opportunities, expensive rent, etc. Dijana writes for numerous newspapers but loses or quits her job, because she isn’t allowed to write the stories she wants or because of the bad working conditions or the blatant sexual harassment. Due to the high rent in the capital, Dijana has to move to the countryside to live with her mother. She feels lonely there, struggles with anxiety and cannot write a second book, because she is constantly under pressure to make a living. She realises that she must persevere regardless of the obstacles, she must follow her inner truth and by writing about it, try to create a community of like-minded people, a community of people who support each other – all literature/art is social.

        by Angelo Costacurta, Sergio Tazzer

        C.R.E.P.P.

        by Federico Barbieri

C.R.E.P.P. is the opening novel of a trilogy that marks different periods in the cycle of life. This first volume tells the story of Paolo and Irene, two of the eight protagonists of this journey. A journey that symbolizes the first of the three phases: the Thesis. Antithesis and Synthesis will follow in the future publications. ---  C.R.E.P.P.

by Ricardo Espinoza Lolas y Jordi Riba (coords.)

In this book, we ask ourselves about something that occurs in a generalized way today in the bosom of Western democracies, perhaps already obsolete models of the old representative and liberal democracy. Democracies where, on one hand, people vote, seems, in an "i-reflexive" way; to people, political parties or social movements that express an apparently undemocratic way of life; that is, a way of life that refuses to be mixed with the Other; a way of life that detests the migrant in all its forms; that refuses an open, supportive and cooperative economy; that ultimately pursues a more “firm hand” against anything that threatens identity values. And on the other hand, it is claimed that the representative character has to take steps forward, also thanks to technologies, to move towards a democracy where the co-design of this by citizens is fundamental and absolutely necessary to save what is still there. It remains democratic in this current simulation that is the democracy of neoliberal Capitalism.

      • The Invention of International Order

        Remaking Europe after Napoleon

        by Glenda Sluga

The story of the women, financiers, and other unsung figures who helped to shape the post-Napoleonic global orderIn 1814, after decades of continental conflict, an alliance of European empires captured Paris and exiled Napoleon Bonaparte, defeating French military expansionism and establishing the Concert of Europe. This new coalition planted the seeds for today's international order, wedding the idea of a durable peace to multilateralism, diplomacy, philanthropy, and rights, and making Europe its center. Glenda Sluga reveals how at the end of the Napoleonic wars, new conceptions of the politics between states were the work not only of European statesmen but also of politically ambitious aristocratic and bourgeois men and women who seized the moment at an extraordinary crossroads in history. In this panoramic book, Sluga reinvents the study of international politics, its limitations, and its potential. She offers multifaceted portraits of the leading statesmen of the age, such as Tsar Alexander, Count Metternich, and Viscount Castlereagh, showing how they operated in the context of social networks often presided over by influential women, even as they entrenched politics as a masculine endeavor. In this history, figures such as Madame de Staël and Countess Dorothea Lieven insist on shaping the political transformations underway, while bankers influence economic developments and their families agitate for Jewish rights.Monumental in scope, this groundbreaking book chronicles the European women and men who embraced the promise of a new kind of politics in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, and whose often paradoxical contributions to modern diplomacy and international politics still resonate today.

Strategy: Get Arts 35 Artists Who Broke the Rules

35 Artists Who Broke the Rules

        by Edited by Christian Weikop

Edited by Dr Christian Weikop, a Professor in Art History at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), this is the first print publication to consider the remarkable formation of the ground-breaking and oft-cited exhibition Strategy: Get Arts, staged at ECA in the late summer of 1970. At the cutting edge of contemporary art, this was unlike anything seen in the United Kingdom to that date, certainly challenging a Scottish art world still struggling to come to terms with the legacy of the Scottish Colourists. It was an exhibition that received international press attention and had a considerable impact on the public, critics, and other curators who saw it, shaking up the conservativism of the British art scene. Strategy: Get Arts (SGA) brought many figures of post-war art, who were based in the exciting cultural city of Düsseldorf, to the United Kingdom for the first time. These artists, who took over ECA, transforming the college into a ‘total work of art’ through their extraordinary actions and installations, were unknown to a British public in 1970. The roll call of talented participants included the likes of Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Blinky Palermo, Daniel Spoerri, Stefan Wewerka, Dieter Roth, Sigmar Polke, Günther Uecker, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and many others who subsequently achieved international fame. In addition to first-hand accounts of the exhibition by Douglas Hall (the first Keeper of the Gallery of Modern Art, National Galleries of Scotland), Jennifer Gough-Cooper (SGA co-ordinator), and Alexander Hamilton (co-editor of Studies in Photography and SGA gallery assistant in 1970), the publication also includes new essays by the editor, Christian Weikop, on Richard Demarco and the Formation of Strategy: Get Arts; Düsseldorf in Edinburgh: The Importance of the Germans; and Strategy Get Arts and Broadcast Media. It also features short essays on the photography of SGA by Karen Barber (a specialist in the history of photography), the controversy concerning the Palermo Restore project by Andrew Patrizio (Professor of Scottish Visual Culture at ECA), the creation of a 2016 archive exhibition on SGA by National Galleries of Scotland archivist Kirstie Meehan, as well as two fascinating Forewords by Keith Hartley (Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Modern and Contemporary Art), and Professor Juan Cruz (Principal of ECA). Many unknown and rare photographs of the artists and artworks at the art college, especially by the German performance artist and photographer, Monika Baumgartl, as well as eye-catching photographs by George Oliver and Richard Demarco, are presented here for the first time. The publication is a triumph of archival detective work, effectively reconstructing the exhibition, profiling all 35 artists who took part, and fully revealing the challenges and dramatic events that unfolded before and during the course of this unique event.
