Biosecurity practices can help prevent the introduction and spread of disease, promoting better animal health and welfare, human health, food safety, and the economic benefits of livestock production. Stemming from a joint initiative between the Biosecure project which brought together 17 partners across 12 European countries, and DISCONTOOLS, the research gap database in animal health, this book provides valuable background information which can help to better understand and prioritize biosecurity measures. Driven by an evidence-based and cost-effective approach to biosecurity, it is divided into two sections covering endemic diseases typically present within most countries, and epidemic diseases with the potential for large scale outbreaks. Through a series of disease entries, it: - introduces the diseases of most relevance for the European context; - reviews our current understanding of biosecurity throughout the livestock production chain, and across the principal terrestrial animal species farmed within Europe: poultry, swine, cattle, and small ruminants; - covers the prevalence, risk factors, transmission routes, current control measures and biosecurity, and data for transmission modelling for each disease. Plant diseases where more than one pathogen is involved in the infection process are commonly termed as "complex" since their diagnosis and subsequent control are more complicated. A disease complex is produced through a synergistic interaction between two organisms, such as plant nematodes and soil-borne fungi or bacteria. Interactions between nematodes and other pathogens are found on a range of agricultural crops globally. Economically, disease complexes are important because the sum of the damage is greater than the effect of the two organisms causing disease independently. Equally, some diseases (e.g. Verticillium wilt) become more aggressive when nematodes are present, even if the inoculum density is low. Plant nematodes can also act as vectors and carry fungi and bacteria to the susceptible tissue or introduce viruses into the host plant. Overall, the development of a disease complex is influenced by several factors such as the engaged pathogens, their mutual relationship and time of invasion, the host plant species and the prevailing environment. Nematode Disease Complexes discusses the different roles that plant nematodes play in the formation of a disease complex. It provides an account of the agricultural significance, aetiology and epidemiology of important disease complexes and their management strategies based on integration of conventional, current and innovative approaches.

This book is an officially authorised advisory manual that implements the recommendations on the energy and protein requirements of cattle, sheep and goats made by the AFRC Technical Committee on Responses to Nutrients (TCORN) since its establishment in 1982. TCORN has produced a series of numbered reports including No. 5 in 1990 on ‘Nutrient Requirements on Ruminant Animals: Energy’ and in 1992, No. 9 ‘Nutrient Requirements of Ruminant Animals: Protein’. The former recommended, with only minor modifications, the adoption of the AFRC’s 1980 Technical Review’s full recommendations on energy requirements of ruminants, while the latter recommended the adoption of a protein system based on Metabolisable Protein as the unit. Opportunity has been taken to include material from TCORN Report No. 8, 1991 on the ‘Voluntary Intake of Silage by Cattle’ and from an unpublished TCORN Report on the ‘Nutrition of Goats’. The current volume presents these recommendations in a practical form designed for use by advisors, farmers, lecturers, research workers and students concerned with the nutrition of ruminant animals. The manual includes 45 tables of requirements (incorporating agreed safety margins) and 29 example diets.
