        Courtship and Mating in Butterflies

        by Raymond J.C. Cannon

The aim of this book is to present a readable account of butterfly behaviour, based on field observations, great photographs and the latest research. The main focus is on courtship and mating - including perching, searching and territorial behaviour - but to understand these subjects it is necessary to explain how mates are chosen and this requires sections on wing colours and patterns. A chapter on butterfly vision is also essential in terms of how butterflies see the world and each other. There have been exciting discoveries in all of these fields in recent years, including: butterfly vision (butterfly photoreceptors), wing patterns (molecular biology), wing colouration (structural colours and nano-architecture), mating strategies and female choice (ecology and behaviour).

        Two Princes and a Queen

A Human Drama on the Danube

        by Shmuel David

Alan’s dying father mumbles mournfully about his first love, Inge, whom he was forced to leave under tragic circumstances. He implores Alan to find out what became of her. Alan becomes inexorably drawn to delving into the past. He pores over his father’s journals as well as other survivor interviews, letters, and journals, including the letters of Inge’s friend, and Inge’s death camp diary.   Bit by bit, he uncovers the horrendous story of the young lovers’ harrowing voyage down the Danube River along with Hundreds of others attempting to flee the Nazis for Israel in a historic fiasco that came to be called the Kladovo-Sabac Affair. While focusing on a touching love story, this historical novel also tells the ill-fated, real-life stories of other people who shaped the journey. Writing has always been second nature to Shmuel David, a software developer expert by profession, and a writer in heart. This, his first full-length novel, is based on the true, heart-rending story of his father’s horrendous voyage from war-torn Yugoslavia to pre-State Israel. 558 Pages, 15X22.5 CM

The Queen, or the Excellency of Her Sex

        By John Ford

        by Lisa Hopkins

A scholarly, modern-spelling edition of a play by the Caroline dramatist John Ford, which has not seen much previous critical attention due to being accidentally omitted from the 1652 edition of his complete works. The introduction resituates the play in the Ford canon and explores how it spoke to audiences when it was first composed in the late 1620s, when it tapped into the contemporary fascination with the pathology of melancholy, and also when it was finally published in 1653. By this time the play's main plot about a sovereign who is threatened with execution would have recalled the beheading of Charles I four years earlier. The play can thus be seen as examining both psychology and politics.

        British and Irish Butterflies

        An Island Perspective

by Roger L H Dennis, Peter B Hardy

Islands are special places; they can be havens for unique plants and animals and refuges for wildlife. This book investigates the biogeography of butterfly species over the British islands, particularly the factors that influence their presence on the islands and that have made each island's butterfly fauna distinctive. The book contains a full log of records of species on the islands and much supporting information. The first three chapters set the scene, illustrating the basics of island biogeography theory, their changing circumstances during the current Holocene interglacial, and studies of natural history of British butterflies that mark the islands as the most intensively studied region for wildlife in the world. The book advances by increasing resolution downscale from a European continental perspective, through patterns and changes on the British mainland, a comparison of the two dominant islands of Britain and Ireland, to a close inspection of the dynamics of species on the multitude of offshore islands. Detailed investigations include contrasts in species' richness on the islands and then of the incidences of each species. Case studies highlight the continual turnover of species on islands. Attention is then given to evolutionary changes since the time that glaciers enveloped Europe. A powerful message is conveyed for the maintenance of butterfly species on the smaller British islands now experiencing population losses at a rate unprecedented since the spread of the last ice sheets: the incontrovertible importance of maintaining populations of species on nearby mainland sources for islands as pools for future migrants. This book is enhanced with supporting material. To access the Online Supplementary Appendices below, please visit: http://www.cabi.org/openresources/95061. Ruffled Butterflies (Collection of short stories)

        by Ayotunde Mamadu

“Till death do us part…”  Seemingly innocent transgressions like squeezing toothpaste or leaving pee on the toilet seat lie in wait to trip up these characters, who become so stifled by their partners that they can’t wait for death to part them.    Some stories in this collection end with cliffhangers, making room for self-reflection and numerous possible endings. These thirteen stories traverse various domestic issues that call for more meaningful steps than grumbling, as the Morgans, Olabisi, Kayode, Vera, and John soon find out.  Ruffled butterfly wings are used as imagery for the delicate family ties of everyday people who are sewn together in marriage. Suspenseful, dramatic, romantic and dipped in an amalgam of Nigerian and Western cultures, these relationships pass through crucibles, with the couples spreading their ruffled, ripped mosaic wings to flutter and fly against all odds.

        Five Elizabethan progress entertainments

        by Leah Scragg, Paul Edmondson

Designed to introduce the student or general reader to a largely unfamiliar area of Elizabethan theatrical activity, Five Elizabethan progress entertainments focuses on a group of entertainments mounted for the monarch in the closing years of her reign. Richly annotated, and prefaced by a substantial introduction, the texts enable an understanding of the motives underlying not only the progress itself, but the choice of locations the monarch elected to visit and the personal and political preoccupations of those with whom she determined to stay. Selected for their diversity, the entertainments exhibit the tensions underlying some royal visits, the lavish expenditure entailed for the monarch's hosts and the overlap in terms of both material and authorship between the progress entertainments and the more widely studied products of the sixteenth-century stage.

        Dido, Queen of Carthage

        by Christopher Marlowe

        by Ruth Lunney

A city burns, and a queen burns for love: Dido, Queen of Carthage re-imagines one of the great legendary stories. The encounter between a wandering hero and an African queen engenders love and loss, eroticism and absurdity, childish simplicity and compelling eloquence. Written for children to perform in the 1580s, Dido is nonetheless a remarkable play, revolutionary in its approach to character, blank verse, and audiences. This volume is the first single-text scholarly edition in English. It is an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and theatre practitioners. The edition features an accessible text, lightly punctuated for ease of reading and speaking. It incorporates new research into authorship (which indicates that Marlowe wrote the play), a detailed analysis of Dido's sources, and a survey of criticism; it assesses the evidence for early performances and provides extensive information about modern productions.
